AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

My partner is a professional cake maker. We lived until recently in the North West. Its a lovely cake but very expensive for NW. I think I would be disappointed gad I paid so much

TractorAndHeadphones · 15/10/2021 19:36

@bigyellowtractorface

At £110 for that cake, I can guarantee the maker won't have earned minimum wage.

I was a cake maker and I would slave away for very little profit. All those saying you have been ripped off, have literally no idea.

Did you not get an explicit email of what the cake would be like? I would for example have explained the cake would be decorated with piped buttercream and probably supplied an image of a similar cake. I would also have explained about the Rice Krispies in advance. I think your child and her friends will find them tastier anyway.

The rice Krispie part means the shape can be more easily moulded than cake and is also lighter, so the head is less likely to fall off in transit.

OP hasn’t seen any of the baker’s animal work, and only sent a photo of her dog so she can’t really complain can she? The price thing is iffy as well, the dinosaur head woman charging £359 was a hint. Where I am (NW suburban area) custom cakes are expensive. In other areas less so.. where there’s only one person doing it anyway

@Notwhatiimagined

I gave her high expectations of it.

We picked the picture of the dog, we ve talked about it a lot (we ordered it 2 months ago) and we were really excited to pick it up.

However after 10 secs she said she still liked it and was happy it had Rice Krispies in the head as it make it more unusual than a standard sponge cake.

Here is the cake which was done for my son which we all thought were brilliant…

Wow my 4 year old would love this!!!

@MaybeAMoaner

I think it’s cool. Looks ace. Maybe the tongue is a bit odd. I’d maybe take that off.
🤣🤣🤣
SunShinesBrightly · 15/10/2021 19:50

@Notwhatiimagined

I think I was expecting it to look more like the dog.

It was £110, north west area

It’s a really nice cake but £110? It’s not worth anything near that. I know custom made cakes are expensive and (usually) rightly so... cost of ingredients, time spent baking & decorating, skill involved etc. But honestly OP, I’d be pretty pissed off if I spent £110 on that.
skippy67 · 15/10/2021 19:51

Sorry @MaybeAMoaner, didn't mean to quote your post. I was giggling at the taxidermy comment in the post after yours

Tulipomania · 15/10/2021 19:53

£110 isn't much for a special cake.

When DS was christened we ordered a cake from Maison Blanc. The only personalisation on it was his name.

They wanted £180 for it. Only problem was, they made it pink, not white like in the photos. DS, obviously, was a boy. I would have settled for half price but they didn't charge at all, which was very nice of them. It tasted absolutely delicious.

That was 20 years ago, goodness knows how much it would cost now...

Briony123 · 15/10/2021 19:53

Wow, £110 for a cake... How people choose to spend their money never fails to surprise me!

tillytown · 15/10/2021 19:58

Yanbu, it's cute but not what you paid for. Also, I didn't know rice crispy heads were a thing, I've always had sponge heads/add-ons that were held up with supports hidden in the base

Doubledenimrock · 15/10/2021 20:00

I have a friend who makes her own cakes for her kids' birthdays, she is great at baking and she would produce something better than that. She is the only person I can compare cake baking of this type to. If your daughter is happy with it though, then job done. Personally I would not pay £110 for a cake. But we are all different

TheAntiGardener · 15/10/2021 20:02

It’s not about buttercream vs fondant for me (I prefer buttercream and love the dog’s face in buttercream someone posted earlier) - it’s the fact that some of the icing just isn’t done very well. Would the professional bakers on here really be happy with the piping on the ears and tail if they had made this? Because as a punter I’d expect a neat and consistent effect as a minimum.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/10/2021 20:02

Looks great. Cake is too heavy for the head.

SunShinesBrightly · 15/10/2021 20:03

Obviously not a dog but Asda’s £12 Jasper the cat isn’t that dissimilar if we’re talking about level of skill.

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Several hours work at £10 per hour... £50 Ingredients... £30 (icing sugar, butter etc add up!) Utilities, rent etc Insurance Food certificates

Not a lot of profit in cake making...

£30 on one cakes worth of flour eggs and butter and icing? What, really?
Buffoonborisisatwat · 15/10/2021 20:08

Faaaarrrrk.... You paid £110 for a child's cake 🤣🤣

FrownedUpon · 15/10/2021 20:12

£110 on a cake for a child is ridiculous.

LadyMuckington · 15/10/2021 20:13

I like it. How much is it expected to serve OP? I can’t believe some people are saying £25! This is why you go and buy a cake from a supermarket then. They’re expensive to make.

The lady we go to is pretty cheap and charges £55 for a 6 inch (6 slices) and £70 for a 9 inch (12 slices). Any flavour and fully decorated. So I see nothing wrong with the quality of yours for the price that it is. There’s a reason the better baker quoted you so much.

icedcoffees · 15/10/2021 20:13

£30 on one cakes worth of flour eggs and butter and icing? What, really?

Yes, depending on how big the cake is, it could easily cost that much!

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 20:14

Serves approx 30

Nayday · 15/10/2021 20:15

Cakes can of course reasonably cost £110.

However this cake doesn't look like a £110 standard cake neither does it look like your dog. The former would be more of an issue for me than the latter.

Surprised the cake maker didn't talk to you though about the brief though, and also you probably saw similar cakes by the maker, so on balance you'll probably need to put this one down to experience.

DroopyClematis · 15/10/2021 20:15

£110 ???!!! For a Rice Krispie dog?

Pixilicious · 15/10/2021 20:17

My 9 year old dc thinks it’s great

sallievp · 15/10/2021 20:18

I love it!

sleepyhoglet · 15/10/2021 20:18

The face isn't great and £110 is a lot! How does it taste?

Pixilicious · 15/10/2021 20:18

Bloody hell not for £100!
