AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

Awwwwwwww I love it

Nayday · 15/10/2021 20:18

Just read your post re the cake maker you used mostly doing drip cakes, think it's likely she stretched her skillset with the dog. The dinosaur cake made by the other cake maker is excellent, and the £350 price tag reflects how much skill is needed to get that likeness!

WimpoleHat · 15/10/2021 20:19

@NotPersephone

Best possible job with an impossible brief I’d say.

It’s a dog made of cake, not the V&A.

If you ask for any cake from a professional baker, they charge in excess of £70. (You can pay £50+ for a “bog standard” personalised cake from M&S. If you’re expecting art in icing, it’s going to cost £££££ as it will take hours and hours of work. I think it’s a bloody good effort for the money.
worriedatthemoment · 15/10/2021 20:20

@TellySavalashairbrush £25 ! You can't even get a basic cake of a cake maker for that , so you ezpect them to work for free

Balonziaga · 15/10/2021 20:22

I mean.... if you google 'realistic dog cake', there are cakes that are in a different league. BUT I think they probably cost more and perhaps, for a child, something TOO realistic would be quite unsettling.

I think the price is fair and it's cute. It's not amazing, but it's fine.

This reminds me of the Reeves and Mortimer sketch with Lloyd Grossman. "It's a shoe cake"/ "it's a cake made of shoe". It's definitely a cake that looks like a white dog. I'm not sure how much more it could look like your dog unless you were spending way more than £110- I'm thinking of the people who make highly realistic cakes as they must cost an absolute fortune.

I'd be disappointed but that's probably because £110 on a cake is a fortune to me so I'd want it singing, dancing and woofing.

BrilliantBulb · 15/10/2021 20:23

Had they made other dog cakes before? How did they look?

I wouldn’t order a realistic animal model cake from someone who makes drip cakes. They’re very different skills.

PieMistee · 15/10/2021 20:26

Fucking hell. £110 for a cake and she might be a bit disappointed. You have far too much money?!

NigellaSeed · 15/10/2021 20:28

@icedcoffees

£30 on one cakes worth of flour eggs and butter and icing? What, really?

Yes, depending on how big the cake is, it could easily cost that much!

I see a few people have said this, it must be true. Blimey I never would of thought.

I'll stick with my home made wonky charming cakes

Zilla1 · 15/10/2021 20:29

I'd pay £110 to not have a photo realistic cake of Fido - I'd rather not suspect a DC of becoming a serial killer if they enjoyed carving and eating their beloved family pet.

You'd feel like a frigging psychopath killing I mean cutting him

Some of the rock-bottom prices people are quoting really go to show how little people value the labour that goes into crafts. I see this all the time with friends who bake, draw, knit, crochet. People expect to get hours and hours of work for pennies because you can get a machine knitted jumper, a printed picture or a supermarket cake for less than a tenner.

Also, bringing up cakes made by mums and aunties is irrelevant. You can't expect strangers meeting a brief while running a business to match the prices of family members doing something meaningful for someone they love.

@Notwhatiimagined

Serves approx 30
30? A tiny mouthful each!
SparklingLime · 15/10/2021 20:38

By ordering from a non-specialist maker at a third of the price quoted by a specialist, OP was trying to have her cake and eat it…

Mumdiva99 · 15/10/2021 20:38

I think the fact your dinosaur lady was quoting 350 should give you an idea that for 110 you won't be getting anything like as good product.

It's still a cute cake even if it wasn't quite what you thought. Happy birthday to your daughter.

AveryGoodlay · 15/10/2021 20:38

Anyway dd came home from school and sort of went… oh… err that’s nothing like the dog! However she said she likes it but it wasn’t what she was expecting. Is your daughter quite spoiled? I ask because what she said is so rude! My children would be delighted with that! Even if they weren't their first response would at least be a thank you!

RedHelenB · 15/10/2021 20:38

@Aquamarine1029

It's adorable. What on earth did you want? A cake that looks like a taxidermied dog?
Lol!
Staffy1 · 15/10/2021 20:40

@skybluee, that dog cake is excellent and I quite like the hedgehog one as well, at least it would make everyone laugh!

StoneofDestiny · 15/10/2021 20:41

£110 for a cake 😱

Idbemonica1 · 15/10/2021 20:42

I think it looks great!

ClinkeyMonkey · 15/10/2021 20:42

For what it's worth, I think the cake in the OP is very cute. I wouldn't have a clue what to expect for £110 as I've never spent that much on a cake. But it's a lovely cake for a 9yo. Incidentally, did you supply a photo of a real dinosaur for your DS's cake?GrinGrin

Still laughing at the poster who proudly displayed their Portal 2 cake as an example of just baking it yourself. Hilarious!

Flowerpower23 · 15/10/2021 20:42

Eh?

It also seems to be because there are so many people about doing them. Especially since lockdown and people started home businesses /got used to posting things out. I know quite a few women whose wares methinks are too cheap for the quality, but they're happy as they see it as a side gig after years of making these for family.

Also having looked at the cake photo on my laptop I now see what other posters mean about quality. The piping isn't quite smooth and the proportions of the head are a bit off.

Arrowheart · 15/10/2021 20:43

£110!!!!!
