AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

It's clearly a dog.
It's cake.
If it tastes lovely then great.
It's not fantastic artist level certainly but for £110 I wouldn't expect a work of art.
Some people seem to think big cakes cost a tenner to make and time is free of charge! There's a lot of ingredients and time in that cake.

Whitney168 · 15/10/2021 17:32

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
At a guess, the person who made the dinosaur cake was starting out in the area of such realistic cakes (even if they'd been selling other cakes before) and is now confident enough to charge properly for their abilities - or perhaps has just realised that they were well below market rate. It is a ridiculous amount of work for £150.
emmylousings · 15/10/2021 17:34

What did you expect?!? It's a CAKE. Who would look at it and think it was anything other than a (cake) dog?

alansjsnlpo · 15/10/2021 17:34

@Goinggrey00

Lol you paid one third of the price your excellent cake designer made and you are then surprised you are unhappy! Get real, OP

Fwiw I think the cake is cute and the shop has done a good job for your budget.

Yes this completely, the price should have been a big clue really OP.
Gin4thewin4 · 15/10/2021 17:35

@2ndtimemum2

I recently got a personalised cake for £18. It was lovely to look at and also lovely to eat Smile

No slave labor.... just her pricing

AmyDudley · 15/10/2021 17:37

Is the wood board the dog is sitting on also made of cake or is it just a stand ? If it is just the dog, I think that's pretty expensive for a cake - I don;t think it is all that professional - it is something I would expect from a home baker with a little side line in cakes for friends and friends of friends.
And where I live no one would be paying out that kind of money for a cake - no one is charging that much (my DDIl had one for her 40th a couple of years ago and it was way better than that and cost much less.)

Sorry if the PP really is the cake maker - but criticism is good as it lets you know where you can improve, and hopefully you took photos of this cake so people know what they will get as a dog cake.

On the upside - it looks quite like my dog, but then my dog looks quite like a cake.

TractorAndHeadphones · 15/10/2021 17:38

Hmm OP I can see why you're disappointed - but the styles look different.
I think your dog baker should have turned you down if she was unable to make a cake to the style you expected. But euqally their previous expertise was in drip cakes so you did take a big risk.

Every day's a school day...

SentDeliveredRead · 15/10/2021 17:38

It looks amazing, hope she has a lovely birthday

nokidshere · 15/10/2021 17:38

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog

Ahh sorry I misunderstood. However, that should have still told you something.

cansu · 15/10/2021 17:40

I think that's cute and it also looks like it will taste lovely. I think the dinosaur one is excellent but paying 350.00 for a realistic rendition of a pet in a cake is madness!

Gin4thewin4 · 15/10/2021 17:40

@AmyDudley

🤣🤣🤣

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
@groundhogdaycherry Did you or was that a joke?

If it really was you, don't be upset. It was a perfectly fine cake and I'm sure it'll taste lovely.

SylvanasWindrunner · 15/10/2021 17:41

Did you see examples of other cakes this baker had done? That should have let you know their style.

I think it's very cute. I personally wouldn't have paid £110 for it but that's mainly because whenever I've had a piece of one of those very highly decorated cakes they actually just don't taste very nice. Too much icing and faff.

LaikO · 15/10/2021 17:42

I agree with you OP, I'm sure it'll taste fine, but I wouldn't be happy with it either, it's a bit like an odd caricature of the dog.

Then that person is either a hobbyist baker, who doesn't look to make any money, or they will pretty quickly go out of business. That kind of pricing isn't sustainable.

boogaloohulahoo · 15/10/2021 17:44

It's lovely and I'm pleased your daughter likes it @Notwhatiimagined Ok so it's not realistic, but as you said someone else wanted to charge £350 so the price of realism is clearly high!
So many people saying it's expensive. I certainly wouldn't pay £110 for a kids birthday cake, but I'm well aware that's what they cost and that bakers don't actually make that much profit.

PatchworkElmer · 15/10/2021 17:48

Depends how many people it’s supposed to serve? The Rice Krispie head thing is standard- it would be too heavy if made of cake. I think the cake is nice and the price is ok if it’s feeding 20+? DS’s cake is £75 and feeding 12 but it’s a standard cake with decorations icing, it’s not shaped.

PatchworkElmer · 15/10/2021 17:49

Also, did you check examples of what the baker had made before?

Trinidading3 · 15/10/2021 17:49

Here's my homemade Portal 2 cake 1st time I baked it. I would ask for a refund and bake it yourself! They have ripped you off.....Flowers

£350 for a cake!…(picks self off the floor) Shock

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 15/10/2021 17:51

That's lovely!

lljkk · 15/10/2021 17:51

OP's cake looks like the picture, looks like a dog.
Dunno about price but for £110, it has a lot of detail, looks very much like OP's dog

DandyHighwayWoman · 15/10/2021 17:53

I think £110 is extortionate 😱

Alwayswonderedwhy · 15/10/2021 17:54

Is this the cake makers usual style? I suppose it's quite old school but I don't think there's anything wrong with it unless you were expecting something more contemporary.

HebalGerbil · 15/10/2021 17:56

@Notwhatiimagined

Have you asked for your partial refund yet?

You surely have the target number of supporters who agree £110 is too much and that it looks like a home baker did it. The other people who want magical bespoke cakes but don't want to pay proper prices for them.

Or are you waiting till after the party, so you can say it tasted terrible too.

You wanted £350 worth of work for £110.
You got £110 worth of work.
