AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

Why has she seen her cake before her party?! That's weird! My whole life, every year, I've done the "oh, what a surprise, I've got a cake!" spiel as it's sung in at some not-so-surprising point in the day

therespectablecardigan · 15/10/2021 17:11

YABVU for paying £110 for a 9 year old's birthday cake. Are you barking mad?

Barkingdog · 15/10/2021 17:13

It's a great cake that your daughter will love. A realistic dog sculpture would have cost many times that. Watch this amazing video to get an idea of the work involved in those. The cake in the video took four days to make. m.youtube.com/watch?v=wOyibd6tDvo

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 17:14

I gave her high expectations of it.

We picked the picture of the dog, we ve talked about it a lot (we ordered it 2 months ago) and we were really excited to pick it up.

However after 10 secs she said she still liked it and was happy it had Rice Krispies in the head as it make it more unusual than a standard sponge cake.

Here is the cake which was done for my son which we all thought were brilliant…

No, I don't rate the cake at all but it did make me laugh ! I think you were probably expecting something along the lines of the Cockapoo cake. I think you are disappointed and you expected better. Going against the grain here but it is hilariously bad. Bet your dd loves it though and that is what matters. Just hope it tastes nice.

yellowsubmarines · 15/10/2021 17:17

Shock It cost how much??? Does it at least sit or rollover or play dead?? I got a lovely cake from Tesco that was covered in pink and white roses for £13. I'm sure they had some dog ones in there but I didn't pay too much attention to them.

It looks like you got a cartoon cake OP which you clearly were not expecting. Let's hope your daughter likes it

rjacksmiss · 15/10/2021 17:18

Should have been white buttercream! Yeah I'd probably be quite disappointed to be fair.

It's nothing like the dog!

GoldChick · 15/10/2021 17:18

The fact someone else was asking £350 to make it should have been a bit of a clue it wasn't going to be the same level of detail and realism tbh.

Anjo2011 · 15/10/2021 17:19

Another vote for good here. Expensive yes but definitely recognisable as your dog .

yellowsubmarines · 15/10/2021 17:20

Glad to hear your daughter likes it OP. The dinosaur cake looks great!

SirensofTitan · 15/10/2021 17:20

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
I thought there was a fair chance that the baker would see this.

Honestly you have nothing to be downhearted about, I was expecting to see something rubbish like to the Extra Slice not an actual professional cake

nokidshere · 15/10/2021 17:21

So you paid 350 for the dinosaur head cake but expected the same quality from someone charging 110? Why did you not get the person who,did the Dinosaur to make the dog?

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 17:22

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog

I don't think it's very good for £110.
I would be upset and feel like I've been ripped off.

HoldingTheDoor · 15/10/2021 17:23

It looks good to me though I can't imagine paying that for a 9 year old or £150 for a 4 year old. That's just crazy.

Neonplant · 15/10/2021 17:25

@PineappleTart

Were you expecting something like this?
This is fucking terrifying.
FitAt50 · 15/10/2021 17:25

It brilliant and you are being really unreasonable - have a word with yourself and enjoy that beautful cake.

DeepaBeesKit · 15/10/2021 17:25

For £110 i really don't think it's that good. Its pretty basic piping and you can just buy nose & eye pieces, they arent difficult to position.

Goinggrey00 · 15/10/2021 17:28

Lol you paid one third of the price your excellent cake designer made and you are then surprised you are unhappy! Get real, OP

Fwiw I think the cake is cute and the shop has done a good job for your budget.

notthatcommon · 15/10/2021 17:29

"It’s a dog made of cake, not the V&A."

Properly laughed out loud at this 😂

You are aware of the difference between something that is mass produced in a factory and something bespoke?
budgiegirl · 15/10/2021 17:31

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
If you knew that one cake maker wanted £350 for a realistic dog cake , you can't honestly be surprised at the cake you got for under a third of the price from another cake maker.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. I think it's a cute cake, not particularly like your dog, but a good cake nonetheless.

SylvanasWindrunner · 15/10/2021 17:31

I think there is some massive underestimating of how much professional bakers need to charge to make any kind of profit on this thread. Think about how long it takes to make and what a fair hourly rate is, then add in the ingredients. If it comes to £25 then you're living about 50 years ago.

A realistic dog cake would take hours and hours of work. That one that Pineapple posted up thread is a £300-400 cake.

Battleofwhocouldcareless · 15/10/2021 17:32

Looks amazing. I would have loved that as a child.

DeepaBeesKit · 15/10/2021 17:32

I think a lot of posters questioning the price are underestimating just how much a cake from a professional baker should cost.

Or they are competent bakers who a) know what the materials cost and b)know the techniques involved in a cake of these type c) know how long they themselves think they would spend doing it and d)dont think that this particular cake demonstrates a level of skill warranting more than maybe 4 or 5 hours work at about a tenner an hour. You could get the ingredients for around £20 easily and that's for retail not wholesale.

I look at it and think it's a big profit margin for something I could make myself.
