AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

Are you ignoring the person on here who is claiming to have made this cake OP?

immersivereader · 15/10/2021 17:56

^

Thanks for the laugh 😁

Cake is fab

TheAntiGardener · 15/10/2021 17:57

Sorry if the PP really is the cake maker - but criticism is good as it lets you know where you can improve, and hopefully you took photos of this cake so people know what they will get as a dog cake.

This is spot on. My impression of the cake would have been completely different if the piping on the ears and tail had been neater and I reckon some experimentation with eyes, nose, etc. could yield a better result too. Since most people on here seem to think the cake is worth its price tag, presumably the baker could charge more for a sharper finish. There are improvements that could quite easily be made if the cake maker wanted to and they wouldn’t involve taking it to the £300+ a cake level.

BoxOfDreams · 15/10/2021 17:57

I think you were ripped off. Ingredients what - £15 max? Time - 6 hours max? Not a good likeness either.

Livpool · 15/10/2021 17:58

I think it is great!

maybemu · 15/10/2021 18:00

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
Seriously?! The ingredients would cost that living wage is around £11 an hr so you thought all of that is 2 hours work and free ingredients!?
category12 · 15/10/2021 18:00

Fucking hell, what's wrong with Colin the caterpillar or something. Hundred odd quid on a cake. Confused

HarrisonStickle · 15/10/2021 18:01

I think the dog cake looks a bit amateurish. It's a generic cartoon dog with stick on dog face bits and looks nothing like your dog, OP, other than being a similar colour.

When you compare it to the dinosaur which was the same price, the difference in quality is phenomenal!

However, if the person who made the dinosaur wanted £350 to do the dog, then I think your expectations of what was going to be made were too high.

You may have been better asking for your dog's head to be made in a similar way to the dinosaur, that might have been a similar price.

@Trinidading3

Here's my homemade Portal 2 cake 1st time I baked it. I would ask for a refund and bake it yourself! They have ripped you off.....Flowers
I'm sure your cakes taste delicious but I'm not sure how they are relevant They are the type of cakes most of us could whip up in an afternoon, they aren't something a professional cake maker would sell

Really?

You're comparing your simple round chocolate cake with blobs, cherries and purchased decorations to a dog cake made by a professional baker.

I have no words!

Artichokepiglet · 15/10/2021 18:05

I would be happy with that for the price. I think they've done a really good job and it looks professional.

Dillydollydingdong · 15/10/2021 18:06

It's very cute.

goneredforwinter · 15/10/2021 18:06

@Trinidading3 your portal cake is fine and I'm sure was much appreciated but it's not a patch on the professional version

Didn't you notice the post about DD's disappointment came after the post claiming to have made it.

Of course she noticed.

Dddccc · 15/10/2021 18:08

Wow people really dont understand the cost of cake making the board and box £6, buttercream for the outside £16, cake ingredients and fillings £10, problem around 8 hours work £72 that's at £9 a hour so thats £113 then gas, electric, equipment, insurance, premises, on top, the only thing I would say is crispy head you should have been told, and did you ask for buttercream or want fondant you cant get realistic with buttercream

Mantlemoose · 15/10/2021 18:09

I think its hilarious, I would have been well chuffed with that! If you wanted a look a like add a 0 onto the end of what you paid!

Mymapuddlington · 15/10/2021 18:10

The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog

You’re moaning that you got a £110 cake but you wanted a £350 cake without actually paying for it.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 15/10/2021 18:11

I really hope that wasn't the cake maker. If it was, well done for making her weekend quite shit because you didn't understand what was reasonable to expect for £110 🤨

HarrisonStickle · 15/10/2021 18:12

@catzfur

I would expect it to look more like this cake unless I’d asked for a cartoon version which I would class yours as.
This looks a lot more professional and more what I'd expect. The nose and eyes are realistic not cartoonish, and the finish is a lot better.

The letters on the OP's cake are awful too, just standard letters plonked by the side. No artistry whatsoever.

Gilly12345 · 15/10/2021 18:14

It looks ok.

£110 for a cake!!! 🤢

LumpyandBumps · 15/10/2021 18:14

I would be happy to have that cake as I prefer buttercream to fondant icing. I think it is cute.

I have made sculpted cakes in fondant for charity events, etc, and they have taken me many hours. I only bake as a hobby, so the time is not important, and I am never trying to replicate a particular item.

The finish in buttercream will not normally be as detailed as fondant, and it would have useful to have discussed which icing you would like.

The dinosaur cake is fantastic, but looks a less complicated shape, and unless you asked for it to be modelled on a specific dinosaur, it is not really a fair comparison.

It is shame that both you and the cake maker are disappointed. I hope it tastes great and that your daughter enjoys it.

DDindistress · 15/10/2021 18:19

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
I also make cakes and people who never bake cakes have no idea the time and money that goes into making a cake! Minimum wage is just under £9 an hour this would have taken a minimum of 6 hours with the baking and decorating but I would say probably longer! Never mind all the ingredients, insurance, electricity etc I think the cake looks amazing and would be delighted with this, not sure what more you could have done :)
NoSquirrels · 15/10/2021 18:19

@Notwhatiimagined

No!!! The dinosaur head was £150, the same person who did that dinosaur wanted £350 for the dog
Well, then you can see that the excellent realistic cake maker thought it was a challenge worth twice as much as the dinosaur.

And yet you entrusted it to a drip-cake specialist to save money…

It’s a lovely cake, it’s a fair cake-representation of your dog. You can’t really complain, can you?

EnidFrighten · 15/10/2021 18:20

I can't tell which is which
