AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

@ShuddaBeenMe

It also looks to me as though it's shit itself.
I was scratching my head over this, thinking you were referring to the surprised expression but now I've noticed-because I've nothing better to do than look at these pictures-that the tail is an unfortunate colour.
yesterdayisinthepast · 15/10/2021 16:53

Sorry £110*

Granllanog · 15/10/2021 16:54

@groundhogdaycherry

I made this cake I'm heartbroken
Don't be!!! It's a lovely cake.
TractorAndHeadphones · 15/10/2021 16:54

I don’t think the baker understood just how ‘like’ you wanted the cake. It’s an ok job for £110.
But £350 is more realistic.

VaguelyInteresting · 15/10/2021 16:56

You get what you pay for OP. There’s a reason the person who made your dinosaur cake that you were happy with, said £350.

Maybe a lesson learned?

KirstenBlest · 15/10/2021 16:57

Did it taste nice?

Nearlyadoctor · 15/10/2021 16:58

I think it’s a lovely cake .

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 16:58

Not tasted it yet, her party is tomorrow

@Notwhatiimagined

Great response! Thanks all.

My dd requested a very realistic cake of the dog so cutting it up if it looked too good wouldn’t of been a problem. I did have a cake done for my sons birthday which was a dinosaur head and that was £150. This was done by a different person though.

The person who did my son wanted £350 for the dog cake.

The person who did the dog cake has a fb page, their work was mainly drip cakes etc but they looked very good.

I did go in and see her to make sure she understood that we were expecting a like for like of the dog as her price was so much cheaper than the dinosaur cake maker.

Anyway dd came home from school and sort of went… oh… err that’s nothing like the dog! However she said she likes it but it wasn’t what she was expecting.

Good grief. What cake will they be getting for their 16th I wonder.
Blondiney · 15/10/2021 17:01

@weekend2021

Do people really pay £110 for their children’s birthday cakes these days?? Thank goodness I am old Grin
Right? Things seemed to have moved on somewhat since the days of Colin the Caterpillar, lol.
Oblomov21 · 15/10/2021 17:01

£350 for a cake? Shock For a kids birthday party. Where do you all get the money from?

I'm off to make one now, for ds2's birthday tomorrow. It's basic. Homemade. Chocolate fingers round the side. Maltesers on top.

Even if I had £350. I wouldn't spend it on a cake for a child.

Mymapuddlington · 15/10/2021 17:01

Dd sounds ungrateful

Gin4thewin4 · 15/10/2021 17:01

It is an ok cake.....
But it is not lifelike or like the dog in the picture, the tongue is making it look silly and to pay £110 for that is daft IMHO

2ndtimemum2 · 15/10/2021 17:02

@TellySavalashairbrush

TBH I don't think it's the best. Can I ask how much did you pay for it? I think anymore than £25 and I would have been disappointed.
Please please please give us the name of the person that can make you a personalised cake for 25....actually I dont endorce slave labour so never mind Blush
picketingpanic · 15/10/2021 17:03

That's about what I would expect for £100.

If you want an artisan cake you have to pay for it.

BSideBaby · 15/10/2021 17:03

If your nine-year-old is not happy with this cake I'd say you've got bigger problems to worry about.

SockFluffInTheBath · 15/10/2021 17:03

@Notwhatiimagined did you introduce the cake with a Confused face it say ‘now I know it’s not the best but…’ because my DD would have been over the moon with that when she was 9 Sad

Blossomandbee · 15/10/2021 17:03

Yanbu if you specified you wanted it to look realistic. It's a nice cake but not £110 worth I wouldn't say. If the head is just rice crispies then you've essentially got a rectangular cake with some basic piped icing on.

WombatChocolate · 15/10/2021 17:05

These things are always a bit of a surprise. It was never going g to be an exact replica of your dog….not in cake form for £110….yes a lot of money, but not enough for an exact replica.

Dinosaur cakes etc aren’t based on an existing real-life creature….so they work better in that p, there is scope. For an element of interpretation. Probably a 9 year old doesn’t quite understand the limits of what’s possible and what’s possible for £110 and imagined the exact dog in cake form. Part of the issue is about managing expectations.

The kids will see the cake. If they know your dog, they will know the cake is your dog, they will eat it and enjoy it. No doubt you might feel the sponge isn’t the quality you’d hoped for for £110 but the kids will eat it and have no real sense of what top notch sponge or cheap sponge might be. Everyone will eat it and enjoy it. Perhaps only you will be a bit disappointed and your child’s disappointment sounds like it’s passed quickly (as these things do for kids.llespecially as they often have no realistic idea of what to expect anyway) and unless you fuel her disappointment, it will probably be remembered as a lovely cake. Kids don’t remember their cakes for the artistic accuracy in replicating their real-life dog, but the fact you made an effort to get a cake if something she loved. You’ve achieved that, so go easy on the baker and yourself.

Hope she has a fab party.

TheAverageUser · 15/10/2021 17:06

It's an OK cake, my thought initially was that it wasn't very good but then the expectation can't be a realistic depiction of the dog I suppose and it is cute.

Dinafoxrocks · 15/10/2021 17:06

I think it looks great but no way would I ever pay £110 for a cake…. From anywhere, for anyone, for any occasion.

REDHERO · 15/10/2021 17:08

It's really nice

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/10/2021 17:08

If you have two quotes, one £110 and the other £350, which do you think will be the most detailed?
Especially if one has no examples of something similar.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2021 17:09

@PineappleTart

Were you expecting something like this?
Blimey those features
WombatChocolate · 15/10/2021 17:10

And I agree, that if you regularly have £350 cakes then the bar is set for potential disappointment.

It’s something to consider….children getting pleasure from simple things. But if you can only be happy with top notch luxury, how is your child to enjoy a simple cake or a basic party game or a basic party bag or present?

I’m pleased with a home made cake and my kids are too. My DH has always out some time and effort into creating it and the more bizarre and amateurish Ines have often given us more laughs and pleasure. It’s been part of it for us. I’m glad we don’t need a perfect replica to make us happy to be honest. The only way is ever down from there.
