AIBU to be disappointed in this cake…

I picked up dds cake today and it was not what I expected.

Would you be happy with this cake? I’ve attached two pics below, one was the pic I sent to the cake maker of what I wanted (a family dog) and the other picture is of the cake.

Also his head is made of Rice Krispies as apparently heads are hard to do. I wasn’t aware that it wouldn’t be all sponge.

It’s from a proper cake shop, not someone who does it as a hobby.

What do you all think?

Perhaps

SusieBob · 15/10/2021 16:30

For £110 that's really good.

This thread is predictably full of people completely unaware of how much businesses need to charge to actually turn a profit for things like this. It's no use saying that your Aunty Mavis could do it for £30 and a lottery ticket but that's not the reality of the situation.

weekend2021 · 15/10/2021 16:31

Do people really pay £110 for their children’s birthday cakes these days?? Thank goodness I am old Grin

Benjispruce4 · 15/10/2021 16:31

It’s never going to be like the photo as that’s a real dog!HmmConfused

CtrlU · 15/10/2021 16:33

Could be better but could be worst

MissConductUS · 15/10/2021 16:35

I think it's pretty good. I just picked up a normal cake from my local, very good bakery and they've raised prices as they've raised wages and all of the ingredients have gone up in cost as well.

Dentistlakes · 15/10/2021 16:36

I think it’s pretty good for the money. If you wanted a very realistic cake you’d have to pay far more than £110. Very realistic cakes take many hours to make and are really works of art.

I would be quite pleased with that and I’m sure your daughter will love it.

Snowisfallinghere · 15/10/2021 16:37

£110 is not much at all, this would have taken a long time to make. If it took several hours to plan and make, and you take the cost of ingredients into account, it's barely going to be minimum wage. You can't compare it to a £15 cake that's been made in a factory that's been optimised for speed and profit.

Whattheduck · 15/10/2021 16:39

It’s cute for a 9 year old and I’m sure she’ll love it but I’d never pay that much for a cake

HalzTangz · 15/10/2021 16:39

To m the dog does look like the one in the photo, but I would alter tongue and eyes slightly as they are a little off, rest of it looks fine

KaleJuicer · 15/10/2021 16:41

@Aquamarine1029

It's adorable. What on earth did you want? A cake that looks like a taxidermied dog?

DillyDilly · 15/10/2021 16:41

I see nothing wrong with that cake, I’m not sure how it could be more realistic looking, how do you think it would be possible to be more life-like??

It’s crazy spending that amount on a child’s birthday cake but I would think all guests will think it’s very cute. Most likely the rice-crispie part will be devoured, probably will be eaten before the sponge part.

I can see how the cake cost that much, I’d say it was time consuming to make, assemble and decorate.

WeThreeKingsofOrientAre · 15/10/2021 16:42

Unlike other replies, I’m not at all impressed with that cake from a professional cake shop for £110. I would also be disappointed.

AryaStarkWolf · 15/10/2021 16:42

@SecretKeeper1

Hopefully, a 7 quid Colin will do next year. Perhaps adopt a caterpillar before hand, so it’s relevant.

Obsidiansphere · 15/10/2021 16:43

I don’t think it’s worth £110 😵

Classica · 15/10/2021 16:43

I think it looks great! Much prefer it to the creepy dog cake someone else posted.

Amberfromcamber · 15/10/2021 16:43

My relative reckons they'd charge between 100-120. but might to a bit of a better job Blush
They only make about £50 per cake and quite often takes at least 2 days to do..

Amazes me that people pay £10 for a brow wax that takes minutes or £50 quid for a haircut that takes an hour but expect bakers to earn way less than minimum wage..

Helpimfalling · 15/10/2021 16:45

It's so
Lovely

Is it a reverse and you made it??

Helpimfalling · 15/10/2021 16:46

110 wow I just read is that how much cakes go for wow

cheeseismydownfall · 15/10/2021 16:47

I voted YANBU.

It is a great cake.

BUT.

It does not look like your dog. It looks like the baker has knocked out a standard cockerpoo without actually looking at the photo of your dog.

Notwhatiimagined · 15/10/2021 16:47

Great response! Thanks all.

My dd requested a very realistic cake of the dog so cutting it up if it looked too good wouldn’t of been a problem. I did have a cake done for my sons birthday which was a dinosaur head and that was £150. This was done by a different person though.

The person who did my son wanted £350 for the dog cake.

The person who did the dog cake has a fb page, their work was mainly drip cakes etc but they looked very good.

I did go in and see her to make sure she understood that we were expecting a like for like of the dog as her price was so much cheaper than the dinosaur cake maker.

Anyway dd came home from school and sort of went… oh… err that’s nothing like the dog! However she said she likes it but it wasn’t what she was expecting.

It's an ok cake, if I'd have made it I would have been quite happy. But for a professional £110 cake.... no

elbea · 15/10/2021 16:52

We paid £70 for a normal birthday cake with ombré frosting and decorations that we provided in the North West. Modelling a cake clearly takes a lot more time, I don’t think it’s particularly expensive. If you were expecting on of these lifelike models you’ll be looking at hundreds and hundreds.

tara66 · 15/10/2021 16:52

It's a CAKE - not a sculpture! It shows a sense of humour - as cake of a dog can only be i.e. somewhat funny and light hearted - don't you get that? Otherwise you need something au Landseer.

yesterdayisinthepast · 15/10/2021 16:53

I personally think it looks nothing like your dog and seems they've just made a cake that looks like any old dog. Maybe because I've seen bakers who can take an image and make a cake very lifelike that I'm saying this.

However I wouldn't expect to go to a professional paying £150 and the cake looks like this. It looks like it was more of a favour from a friend who occasionally bakes then a professionalGrin
