If you do the school run in your exercise gear..

So on my days off I go to an exercise class with a friend, as my job is sedentary I really look forward to it and do the school run on those days in my exercise gear to save time as straight after. When I am working hubbie does the school run. So 9/10 when I'm doing the school run, I'm dropping off in my exercise gear. This week a mum who I don't speak to very often (and is known to be catty) looked at me and said 'you do try, don't you?'. When I asked her what she meant she said 'by going to the gym every day'. I'm torn between thinking she got her words out wrong, to her her being downright catty. I've asked two friends and both had opposite replies one thought she was being a bitch, the other who sees the good in everyone thought she must have not meant it that way. What would you have said to her in reply? I'm conscious now of wearing my gym gear now silly as it sounds! Confused I wasn't aware I was 'trying'!

"Well [look her up and down] better than giving up!"

youcantchoosethem · 15/10/2021 17:46

Carry on with wearing Lycra and exercising! Better than some of the ones around here who go in dressing gown and slippers!! No - I haven’t!! Even saw one recently in John Lewis of all places in dressing gown, slippers and rollers!!! Speechless…

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 15/10/2021 18:02

She was being catty, thought it was a clever thing to say and hoped others would hear and think what a wit she was.

I had similar thing when a very snooty fashion conscious mum remarked loudly in a super sweet tone "Ohh look at you.. riding your bike to school!" tinkly laugh at the "cuteness" of the scene. I felt so embarrassed at being pointed out like that and all I could manage was "What's so funny about cycling to school? " with a Paddington stare, which I know was totally lame and probably looked bad tempered. It really did make me wonder was there something wrong with what I was wearing, should I carry on cycling if I looked so stupid she had to remark on it to passers by but decided, I'd already been seen.

It feels grim, but there are plenty people thinking that they should also be multi tasking like you are. Don't let this silly moo derail you.

We've got a mum that's nasty and puts other parents down, she seems to enjoy putting people down. Ignore it and enjoy, that way if she's being nasty she won't get won't get the reaction she's after. ;)

I wear gym leggings and a hoodie most days. Sometimes a suit if I've been with customers. Sometimes just jeans and a blazer or a dress and combat boots.

I still don't get included. Used to bother me but I am not bothered anymore. I just take headphones and blank them back.

Michellelovesizzy · 15/10/2021 18:14

I do the school run in gym gear all the time and I don't Evan go to the gym

Michellelovesizzy · 15/10/2021 18:15

I find the school yard hard work I drop and run so need the gym gear Winkonly bit of exercise I get running from the catty mums

lljkk · 15/10/2021 18:16

I'm not getting this because I thought ActiveWear was still in fashion. Wearing It doesn't mean people are actually about to take any exercise.

For ~2 yrs I used to drop DS off at multisport practice & go for a run myself until he finished. Can't even recall anyone complimenting me for the effort. So I was in exercise gear. I can't recall anyone else going for a run, even though plenty of the other parents were in running gear -- they just wore it as part of the 'fashion'! Would stand around chatting in their "sport" gear.

Lulu2021 · 15/10/2021 18:21

looked at me and said 'you do try, don't you?'.

Did anyone else read this in the voice of Amanda from Motherland? Grin

Horst · 15/10/2021 18:22

I think it depends. We have mums who wear gym gear and clearly go to the gym then we have the mums who wear gym gear, full face of make up perfect hair who come back to pick up in the same gym wear still immaculate after driving off from pick up in their white brand new range rovers.

If your in the latter group yes catty. The first group probably just stumbled her wording.

MarshmallowSwede · 15/10/2021 18:25

“Yes I do. You should also try. You would benefit from some physical fitness I can see.. ok have lovely day”. Throw in a fake air kiss to be sure.

Diva66 · 15/10/2021 18:27

Reply ‘and you don’t try, obviously’. Smirk while saying it for best effect,

nancybotwinbloom · 15/10/2021 18:28

@Michellelovesizzy

I do the school run in gym gear all the time and I don't Evan go to the gym
Here is your mate lol I don't even have a gym membership
diamondpony80 · 15/10/2021 18:29

Everyone at our school dresses very casually so there are lots of t-shirts, leggings, hoodies etc. They might be going to the gym, but I doubt if most are. Luckily nobody cares!

Brefugee · 15/10/2021 18:33

haha - I'd have given her the slow up and down and said "you don't, do you?"

bigbeatmanifesto · 15/10/2021 18:34

What a weird thing to say to someone, I would of said yes, I actually try very hard to be a healthy parent it also gives my kids incentive to look after themselves too.

Footprintsonthemoon1 · 15/10/2021 18:35

One mum at my dcs school has commented something similar to me being catty and how it must be so nice to be a sahm (I'm not) and have time to exercise, she's far too busy to find the time.

As it happens I know for a fact she goes to a spin class twice a week after the drop off. I'm biding time though. Also biding my time about telling her I work

Amitskitshaw · 15/10/2021 18:35

Oh no!!! This is the kind of thing I would say if I was making a compliment …. Like you do try don’t you (because I don’t) so I’m impressed. I guess it depends on the tone.

DDMAC · 15/10/2021 18:40

What a strange woman. I see people wearing exercise gear every day and they’re not even going to the gym.

DaisyStiener · 15/10/2021 18:46

Take a gym and a doughnut next time
Confuse the F out of her…
Jealous…

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 15/10/2021 19:15

What you should have said was, "As opposed to you who obviously doesn't!"

shrunkenhead · 15/10/2021 19:24

I think it was a dig at the school moms that like to drop off in their "active wear" but don't go to the gym. And yes, Amanda from Motherland springs to mind!

calvados · 15/10/2021 19:28

Next time… Say ‘Yes I do …. and some don’t!’ Then leave her standing with her mouth open … but really? What she thinks of you is none of your business! Grin

Anotherlongroad · 15/10/2021 19:37

Good on you and keep doing exactly what you’ve been doing, unapologetically! Don’t bother with replies or put downs as they’ll dent your happiness - it’s obviously not natural for you to be catty! Just ignore her and keep enjoying your morning routine. It sounds like you enjoy it and happy ladies are attractive ladies as far as I’m concerned. Keep it up, stay happy and ignore the unkind vibes.

Bertiebiscuit · 15/10/2021 20:37

I think all the cool young mums wear exercise gear to live their lives - she's a jealous sourpuss who needs to mind her own business - just walk away if she ever speaks to you again, in your sweaty Betty's or whatever - go you
