... that you cant afford to buy your kids anything for xmas, wtf are you doing online?

last i heard, internet cost money, wether you have it at your house or pay to use the library/internet cafe.

Instead of coming Online and bitching about how skint you are... keep the pennies and try spending them on your kids instead!!!

OP posts:
whispywhisp · 09/12/2007 14:35

It's a case of what you want to spend your money on.

TBH I don't spend much on my kids at Xmas - when I was a kid (30+ yrs ago) we had one present from our parents and that was it. It made us value presents and value money. Some kids these days just do not appreciate what they have.

My DD is already telling me that her mates are getting this and that for Xmas - yes, and?!!

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 09/12/2007 14:53

Lazawreath, thanks and no worries at all, am not in clear thinking mode today, rather sleepless again, my fault entirely

Computers are very expensive, I have got one but it was the cheapest I could justify, and is still not paid for 2 years later. I guess standing the cost of a PC against presents for the children might make more sense than a similar comment about broadband - maybe that is what puzzled Kaishay. Again, the fact it can be paid for in installments plus overall necessity of having one in this society are both counters to that question.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 09/12/2007 15:01

I bought my pc through a catalogue when I went to college whilst I was a single parent, when I met DP he had his own, so we gave mine to a friend who would not have been able to afford one otherwise.
There are many ways to get hold of a pc.

SquonkaClaus · 09/12/2007 15:06

oooooh, got to add my tuppenceworth to this one!

We pay an all in one price for our telephone and internet connection. Dp gets a laptop free with work. What I spend on my kids is sod all to do with you.

bog off

SquonkaClaus · 09/12/2007 15:07

so, yes, YABU. Lots

ChristmasSendsMePsycho · 09/12/2007 15:12

not read all the posts but that is a really mean thing to say.

how do you know that the internet isn't there for them to work from home on.

or even that they pay it as a 'present' for their DC's for access to online stuff for homeowrk etc.

as far as it goes in our house, and probably 99% of households, the internet is as neccessary as gas and electricity as we do online banking, shopping (as we can budget easier if we see what we are spending etc), homework for DC's, DH needs it work his work occasionally, I need it for de-stressing and help with finding help with kiddies with 'conditions' etc

NAB3littlemonkeys · 09/12/2007 15:14

I know the OP didn't mean it the way it came out but I still want to say that this site has helped me loads and I appreciate every bit of kindness I have been shown.

I also know I have been on it a bit too much when the kid are about and have cut down a bit.

lazawreath · 09/12/2007 15:22

I see! Oh by the way lapin, what exactly is in a fortnum and masons hamper? Totally off topic, sorry.

lou33 · 09/12/2007 15:26

and a yohoho to you too kaishay

my internet is 5 pounds a month

aside from myself being online my kids need it for their schoolwork

really wish i hadnt clicked on this now

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 09/12/2007 15:27

lou33, don't let it bother you.
If you read the whole thread you'll see it wasn't necessarily as harsh as it seemed.

Sorry guys.

It was a genuine question, for those who haven't read profile, i'm autistic.. Asperger syndrome.

I have to ask these things to find out if my first thoughts about things are right or not.... better to ask you guys than blurt something to people and offend them.

Probably could have worded it better though... i need an edit button...

TenLordsaLapin · 09/12/2007 15:32

lazawreath - ooh thank you! Since you're asking, I'll got for one of these please

ChristmasSendsMePsycho · 09/12/2007 15:33

have now actually gone back and read them all as was scrolling thro and spotted a couple that made me re-think....specifically the fact that you have asperger's and so therefore your social boundries with asking Q's is slightly skewed. You are also good enough to explain and apologize for the wording, which I find hard to do.

I am sorry for calling you mean as really I wouldn't have had I read this in full before posting, which has taught me a lesson in reading (altho, do many when a thread is very long and moving so quickly?)!

I do stand however on my reason's for why people who are stapped for cash otherwise still manage to find money for PC's etc.

TenLordsaLapin · 09/12/2007 15:36

It's because of threads like this that I keep annoying irritating asking Tech nicely for the ability to add to OPs (ie have another line at the bottom: "Edited at blah blah to say: blah blah blah") - so the original message isn't changed, but clarification can be made.

VeVacuaMerryChristmas · 09/12/2007 15:49

or a function that requires people to THINK before they post? you wouldn't hear much from me then or several others . . .

lazawreath · 09/12/2007 15:51

Flippin heck! They are lush aren't they? The childrens one looks nice. I might push the boat out next year.

TenLordsaLapin · 09/12/2007 16:15

I have had one in the past (NOT the £20,000 one!) and they are lovely. But you are paying for the name (we bought one for exBF's v v snobby expat colonial parents)

Emprexia · 09/12/2007 16:18

We need a post waiting thing.

"Its been 5 minutes since you hit post, are you sure you still want to ask that question in that way? If not.. please click Edit"

OP posts:
VeVacuaMerryChristmas · 09/12/2007 16:21

but it would be too quiet and too boring for words then

expatinscotland · 09/12/2007 16:24

Oh, we haven't had one of these in a while!

Personally, we're a pretty skint family.

BUT, I do some freelance work for a quango and in that capacity am self-employed.

I have to pay the taxes from the earnings from this work as a self-employed person.

So I claim the broadband as an expense, since it's essential to the job.

We bought a PC back when both of us were working.

And my landlords left us the use of this laptop.

Are you still bored? Or do you have any other probing, rude, non-essential questions?

Merry Christmas!

mellymooks · 09/12/2007 16:24

Internet access is free at libraries!!!!!

bossybritches · 09/12/2007 17:11

Or with certain deals on mobiles!

expatinscotland · 09/12/2007 17:16

poor people don't deserve mobiles, though, BB .

Peachy · 09/12/2007 17:19

Who's bitching about how poor theya re?

The internet is DH's biggest source of disposable income, through his business sales. be rather illogical to ditchthat wouldn't it?

Not that I class ourselves as poor. otherwise disadvanataged yes, not poor. Bot at the moment (facing a massive drop of income next year but we chose to have this baby so that's OK)

beeper · 09/12/2007 17:19

Hrrm poor people are mainly poor because they spend all thier money on the national lottery and scratch cards..
