Invited to a wedding early December.

Requires an overnight stay as it's in the grooms home town.

I can't see it happening Covid wise.

Don't want to book a hotel or lose any money. But tempted to just say I'm going safe in the knowledge numbers would get cut / cancelled completely.

AIBU to think it won't go ahead?

Use Hotels.com or an AirB&B so you can cancel

Somertime · 12/10/2021 21:11

If the flu is as predicted and covid into the mix there is a chance it won't go ahead but only a very small chance. More likely any restrictions will be after Christmas. Most hotels offer flexible booking or cancellation due to covid so you should be safe with your money. Book if you want to go but decline if you don't really want to go.

NailsNeedDoing · 12/10/2021 21:11

Numbers going up doesn’t mean it won’t go ahead

icedcoffees · 12/10/2021 21:24

@weddingguestdec

Numbers are going up.
And?

That means nothing unless hospital admissions and deaths rise at a similar rate.

We won't lockdown again - we can't afford to.

Standrewsschool · 12/10/2021 21:26

Book a hotel with a cancellation policy.

Unsubscribed · 12/10/2021 21:27

AIBU to think it won't go ahead?

Yes

DartmoorChef · 12/10/2021 21:28

Numbers are bound to go up as its autumn and germ season.... but deaths and hospital admissions are still staying much lower. Highly unlikely any restrictions will come back in.

ANameChangeAgain · 12/10/2021 21:29

I see your point about covid numbers increasing, which following the pattern of last year would have meant lockdown. However so many people are now protected by the covid and flu vaccines that I don't think they'll be another lockdown. The government need the goodwill of the public for lockdown to work, and they really won't get it this winter.

NeedToKnow101 · 12/10/2021 21:29

@ChatterMonkey

Is your post late by a year??
😂😂😂
CrystalBuddha · 12/10/2021 21:32

I don't see another lockdown on the horizon (but equally I don't have a crystal ball - despite my username!)
It's unlikely to get cancelled / numbers cut, but if you feel unsafe going due to Covid then it's a valid reason to say 'thanks, but no thanks'

YellowMonday · 12/10/2021 21:37

Book a hotel which has a cancellation policy? It may cost a little more, but you can always cancel and rebook closer to time if you find somewhere cheaper or cancel and get your money back if the wedding does not go ahead.

junebirthdaygirl · 12/10/2021 21:37

If you book with Booking.com you can cancel right up to the last few days and only pay on arrival.
I think weddings will go ahead

TurquoiseDress · 12/10/2021 21:40

I'd be very surprised if it doesn't go ahead

Same for if we have another lockdown in a couple of months

Book up & plan for the wedding if you want to go...if you don't, get your excuses in order!Wink

Toottooot · 12/10/2021 21:42

Why’s it nae gan tae happen? Fit di you ken we dinna?

EileenGC · 12/10/2021 21:42

Book a refundable hotel.

Numbers going up won’t change things, not in England anyway. They’ve been going up for a while and there aren’t any restrictions in England anymore. I don’t see how I’m 2.5 months we’d go from that, to weddings being banned!

Imwearingtrousers · 12/10/2021 21:43

Eh?! It's not March 2020

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 12/10/2021 22:00

Can’t see another lockdown on the horizon. Everyone will have had a Covid by then!

Most hotels are offering refunds up to 48 hours ahead.

If you’re not comfortable it is reasonable to cite Covid as an excuse.

LadyMuckington · 12/10/2021 22:10

Why will it not go ahead? We recently went to a 100 person wedding and was fine. I even attended a 3500 capacity venue concert the other week which was sold out!

WhoWearsShortShorts · 12/10/2021 22:12

It will go ahead. Don't mess the couple about if you don't want to go then decline the invite

EasterIssland · 12/10/2021 22:14

Op do you want to do or using COVID as an excuse not to go?

HowardNoir · 12/10/2021 22:19

YANBU, I know people think covid is over but we're not entirely out of it yet and not everyone is safe. Could you book an Airbnb or something self catering that even if the wedding is cancelled, you can go to? Most stayed open even during lockdowns so even if something does happen, you can still have a night away fairly safely. Premier Inns offer refunds until the day before I think so that could be an option too.

If you are concerned, just don't go. I'm sure they'll have other guests cautious about going and won't mind if you can't make it.

Coffeey · 12/10/2021 22:19

If you don't want to go don't use Covid as an excuse. It seems like you almost want it to be as as shit as last winter just so you can get out of going to a wedding.

JessicaFletcherxx · 12/10/2021 22:20

I've been to 7 weddings this year, all rescheduled from last year, all went ahead without issue and were lovely and even more special than they would normally have been. If you don't want to go then that's a different issue. I personally loved seeing all the happy couples FINALLY having their special day and felt very honoured to be part of them all.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/10/2021 22:22

@weddingguestdec

Numbers are going up.
But I don't think hospitalisations are. And that is the main reason for lock downs.
