To think we should be protesting

For affordable childcare.

Why are we letting the government get away with the absolute joke that is childcare in the U.K.

Over 2k per month to send 2 kids to nursery seems like madness! There should absolutely be reform to this crazy state that we’re in. Surely a huge majority of the voting population have children/have grandchildren or plan to have children, but this issue is rarely talked about at election time!

The state does provide for healthcare, education etc regardless of financial status. It also subsidises childcare. But people always want more shrug

forinborin · 11/10/2021 20:21

If you bother reading the comments - we are paying for social care and pensions for the generation above.
Childless people from the generation above paid for your own and your parents' welfare when you were a child as well Wink

Pythonista · 11/10/2021 20:25

Yes but they didn't pay childcare. And that is what the thread is specifically about. I'm not arguing about social care/education/healthcare etc.

Yea we all pay for the generations above and below us. And that is how society works.

If you are earning over £50k a year, you can at least pay for your own childcare

MyothercarisaCozyCoupe · 11/10/2021 20:31

Yes, and sometimes that means paying for things that don't benefit you directly because it's best for society overall.

Pythonista · 11/10/2021 20:32

Nobody is disputing that.

Not sure why it's so difficult to understand. Hmm

Pythonista · 11/10/2021 20:33

Anyway it's all a lovely idea I'm sure but it won't happen.

MyothercarisaCozyCoupe · 11/10/2021 20:34

Loads of people seem to be disputing that on this thread!

DroopyClematis · 11/10/2021 20:35

@MyothercarisaCozyCoupe

Some of the posts here are shocking.

I'd be curious how many of the 'why should I pay for your family' posters expect taxpayers to fund their parents' social
care.

Rest assured that many middle aged people are funding private care for their elderly parents as they , miraculously, "don't qualify" for support in their declining years.

Yes but they didn't pay childcare. And that is what the thread is specifically about. I'm not arguing about social care/education/healthcare etc. Why didn't they? OK, they paid for mothers to stay at home then. In one way or another, someone looked after your generation and that someone had to be housed, fed, kept warm and entertained.

If you are earning over £50k a year, you can at least pay for your own childcare
In many cases it is simply unaffordable to do so, as explained many times on this thread. Not unaffordable as in having cheaper holidays, unaffordable as in not having enough for essentials. 50K is 3K net per month, with unsubsidised childcare easily being 2K of those.

Won't be funding mine as they have saved up enough to take care of themselves.
cutietooties · 11/10/2021 20:58

@HalzTangz I'm not referring to parents who work part time I'm referring to parents who don't work at all

Sometimes???? Seriously its all the time for single childfree children.

This is what pisses us off. We don't ever get any type of benefit for paying into the system. It isn't sometimes its all the time.

Noone can name one benefit that single childfree people get that noone else gets because there isn't one!

We pay in for the nhs, subsidise poor, supoort vulnerable and disabled people, subsidise childcare, subsidise social care, subsidise education, subsidise pensions

Where is the subsidy for a single chidlfree person? There isn't so how can you say sometimes we have to pay for stuff that doesn't directly benefit us when there is not one thing that directly benefits us only.

And there in lies the rub. Hand over more taxes to subsidise other people more, keep handing it over pay more and get fuk all for it.

Every yr the budget helps all these groups except if your single and childfree, you get nada, zip, zilch except to hand over more taxes to help other people.

But does anyone give a shit? Anyone actually thinking thats a pretty shit deal and yeah perhaps we should at least acknowledge that it is before wanting more money from people...nope noone does even on this thread...instead you get vilified as being selfish for saying enough is enough

Pontypandytaxpayer · 11/10/2021 21:16

But presumably you went to school at some point in the past? Have you ever used the NHS?

On the bright side, maybe you'll get lucky and end up poor, vulnerable or disabled and then you can take great delight in some someone else supporting you. Hmm

PetticoatSoldier · 11/10/2021 21:20

The government/taxpayer literally pays for everyones choices! 😆

I'm sure we all have different opinions on what should be prioritised for tax spending or subsidy. Personally I feel that supporting women to have a real choice in whether they want to stay home or work after having children, and then ensuring the wee ones have fantastic care either way, should be right up there.

@Dreamstate
Im getting fed up of your “childfree” comments and how much you pay in taxes for other people’s kids.

Do you really think that only childfree people pay taxes ? Guess what working parents pay taxes as well and rich people pay taxes as well. In fact rich people pay thousands of taxes so that you can have the lifestyle you have or do you think all the taxes you pay into the system are enough for what you cost to the country ?

I don’t benefit from many of the things I pay taxes for , but yet I’m happy to pay for them because I know society benefits from
Working people.

If you really think being a parent is so easy and economically so beneficial then have your own kids.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/10/2021 21:32

1k a MONTH!!!

Loveshelly · 11/10/2021 21:34

@Dreamstate
You could probably get some government funding to go back into education to learn how to be literate. I wouldn’t mind my taxes helping you out with that. We all need to help each other.

Actually yes I do think the taxes I pay cover my costs to this country ...and what are those costs exactly because I dont qualify for any benefits and dont have children. Only thing left is the NHS and since im in good health the only time.i use it is for the regular screening which isn't even every year. So yeah I think pay over £500 a month on taxes is more than enough to cover what I cost this country.

I think I pay enough to subsidise the current childcare, I dont think I should pay anymore. Yes parents also pay taxes but they don't pay anything specifically for me so you missed my point entirely.

So what choice of mine (being single and childfree and earning somewhere around £50k mark) is it paying for?

Oh give over.
One day you’ll need help and you’ll be glad of it. And if you don’t then you’ve lived a life of luxury that most people couldn’t ever comprehend

EasterIssland · 11/10/2021 22:40

@Dreamstate maybe you should stop paying taxes.. save that money and take care of yourself. you might realise your 500£/month dont go far down the line!

EasterIssland · 11/10/2021 22:41

should we also ask the money for those people we subsidise their benefits from or is it only parents we're angry about?

When i was made redundant a few years back, there was no help for me I didnt qualify. Despite paying NI that is supposed to be there for you in hard times it wasn't.

I know ill never get any help no matter what because the one time I did need it, I was denied it.

So in the future if I need help I have zero expectation of getting any help so im make damn sure I am never in that situation.

Loveshelly · 11/10/2021 22:52

I cannot stop paying taxes thats a stupid comment.

And actually my £500 would go far since I dont cost the country anything right now. I'm already looking to sign up to private medical care next yr and thats only going to cost me £60 a month gmmm let me see thats still £460 that I put to good use by investing it.

So yeah I think your wrong thinking that it won't go far.
