To think we should be protesting

For affordable childcare.

Why are we letting the government get away with the absolute joke that is childcare in the U.K.

Over 2k per month to send 2 kids to nursery seems like madness! There should absolutely be reform to this crazy state that we’re in. Surely a huge majority of the voting population have children/have grandchildren or plan to have children, but this issue is rarely talked about at election time!

If you can’t afford childcare, don’t have kids. I only have one child for that reason. Stop expecting other people to pay for your lifestyle choices.

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 22:55

@Kolingpursey so each of those countries its exactly 200 euros ? What is the wages for that ? So they also get free healthcare ?

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 22:57

@Kolingpursey quick google about childcare costs in greece shows thats not true

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 22:57

Where do you draw the line?

Well luckily it's already been drawn

Kolingpursey · 10/10/2021 22:58

Childless people who "begrudge" having to pay for other people s children, who do you think will pay for your pension in your old age? Who will be your doctor? Who will wipe your bottom? Who will invent the science for your medicines? Those other people's children you begrudge paying for, that's who.

Kolingpursey · 10/10/2021 23:00

Round about figure. Give or take 50. Florence, Milan max 650. Greece oh yes have friends and family there. Google it better, in Greek.

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:00

@Kolingpursey no they are begrudging paying childcare for people on high salaries
We have subsidised childcare for lower salaries
The op says 2 income family , 40%!tax payers so not low earners

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:01

@Kolingpursey but your friends and family don't represent it all you have chosen to pick and choose parts , such as who pays that amount , who is subsidised

Danikm151 · 10/10/2021 23:01

Childcare should be subsided from 9 months old.
Those of us with children under 3 are forced to pay through the roof to keep our jobs.

They’re all about let’s get people back to work but refuse to engage in one of the biggest barriers to that for parents.

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 23:02

Read the thread - I'm sure you can get someone to explain the long words.

Nobody is begrudging funding education and healthcare for all. Nobody is begrudging funding extra childcare for poorer families.

We are begrudging paying more tax to fund childcare for higher rate taxpayers (who by definition are earning a shit ton) and for people who don't actually bother thinking about the practicalities of paying for it before they make that choice

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:05

@Danikm151 many people do get help though , those on lower wages can have upto 80% covered

My sister pays €300 in Spain for her child’s nursery. She earns around 2k and so does her partner. (This is in a public school)

A friend pays around similar price for her child in another area of Spain. Her partner is a high earner. (Think the child goes to a private one as they couldn’t get a space in the public nursery cuz of his salary).

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:07

@Pythonista exactly we already do have subsidised childcare for lower earners etc
A couple of £100000 don't need subsidised childcare, the just need to save a little before or forgo a few luxuries
Where as some parents on lower wages are actually forgoing meals

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:07

@EasterIssland and how much is her healthcare ?

EasterIssland · 10/10/2021 23:09

Do you mean by taxes ? 6-7%
And tax they pay much less than the 20% here

@EasterIssland they do pay higher taxes though even on lower wages so its all swings and roundabouts

As some have said 100k in some areas of the country won’t take you far once you’ve paid the mortgage and nursery. Yes they can move to another area of the country but then they won’t be taking home 100k.

forinborin · 10/10/2021 23:11

But you realise that a woman on £51K (a higher rate taxpayer) in many parts of the UK - these are also, funnily, parts where you often have to live to be able to earn that amount - still easily earns less net than full time childcare costs for her two preschool children (again, below the reproduction rate for the population, not an outrageous luxury)? That's the extent of the problem that the UK has. Just look at the examples on this thread. I honestly think that many people just don't understand how the numbers stack up.

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:12

@EasterIssland in most places outside london yes it is a lot
People will be living in the same areas on £20 k

Pythonista · 10/10/2021 23:13

Oh boo how. Are you really suggesting that lower rate taxpayers (as in paid less!) should subsidise richer people because they live in an expensive part of the country? Wow.

In Spain? No. My friends pay around 15% tax

A high earner pays 18.5% whilst in the uk they pay 40%

I was previously a childminder. I had sahp use me rather than pay for me to look after Dc rather than pay a cleaner as it was cheaper.

That says a lot to me.

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:15

@forinborin do you not think most of us have to take this into account and either have a break or a larger gap so you don't have two in nursery before getting the 30hrs free

worriedatthemoment · 10/10/2021 23:15

@EasterIssland not what I am finding when i google
