What is happening to the uk? No food on the shelves, the cost of living has become extortionate coupled with stagnating wages it seems this is a country where unless your in the higher income bracket you really can't afford to live anymore.
Poverty is going to be rife I dread to think the amount of people who will be choosing between food or heating this year.
Aibu to think this country has gone to shit of the likes we have not seen for a long time.
I am lower income and feel like I can't afford to live anymore.

@ivykaty44

whereas Boris won't because he promised not to in his manifesto

did you miss the tax rise? or are you being sarcastic?

JC wasn't able to enact his many tax rises to fund his magic money tree spending plans.
ivykaty44 · 09/10/2021 22:30

France, Portugal, Spain and Italy all have massive tourism industries that have been hard hit by covid. They don’t have the problems that UK is having. It’s fucking BREXIT!

yes but those that voted Brexit want to now blame covid19 as it deflects from the fucking mess they've voted for

BunsyGirl · 09/10/2021 22:31

@Cazzovuoi Another clever arse that can’t read the thread properly…I was talking about the price of holidays and how they have increased since two years ago…

jgw1 · 09/10/2021 22:31
@jgw1 Stop trying to make me look like an idiot. You can clearly see from the thread that I was talking about certain price increases that have nothing to do with Brexit…I never mentioned gas prices…
Sorry, I was confused, did you mean the rising cost of milk?

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 09/10/2021 22:31

I think the media, and some posters here, just love whipping eachother up in a frenzy of despair

Seem to even enjoy it

Makes no sense to me. No iceberg lettuce? I mean is that really IT when people say there is “no food on the shelves” ?

All I see is people whipping themselves up into a frenzy.

Keep calm and carry on, remember that? People are totally going for the opposite. And it does not help

User135644 · 09/10/2021 22:32

@Vampsticks

I don't see how Labour would do anything different aside from pile on a lot more debt for future generations to pay and squeeze the middle taxpayers even more.
Tories have piled on endless debt since 2010, in addition to austerity on the poorest.
DnVLittle · 09/10/2021 22:32

Theres too many people on this little island.
Government need to look after the British people b4 trying to help the world.
I'm second generation born Indian/british so I'm not racist b4 anyone starts. 😂 Realistically speaking, too many people and stretched resources, and not forgetting greedy companies/businesses.

Also state of nhs, not able to see a doctor face to face fuel crisis so many things going wrong right now. If anyone has any words of wisdom how things might get better soon it would be much appreciated as all feels pretty helpless right now.
I’ve seen a gp throughout the pandemic, got fuel whenever I’ve needed it, no real shortages in the supermarkets near me. I’ve no idea where this hysteria is coming from.
Roussette · 09/10/2021 22:33

Yes.

So convenient.

But have they actually got the nerve to admit they voted for Brexit?

Very brave.

All those on twitter who slagged me off have disappeared.

Funny that....

and how many promises has Johnson actually kept?

a 1.5 % tax increase wasn't on the cards and he does this on NI which will mean it'll effect those lower paid far more than the higher paid proportionally

Moonwatcher1234 · 09/10/2021 22:33

@KloppsTeeth

It’s shit for us at the moment. Full time carer to a disabled child, two children, we don’t smoke, drink or go out, apart from twice a year for birthdays. I cut my own hair, and DH’s. I haven’t had new clothes in 3 years, and neither has DH. We have fixed a mortgage rate so that won’t change, but everything else going up, we are on Bootstrap cooking and we are making plans to use duvets to keep warm in winter to keep our fuel costs low. We will get through it, but things are dire. We earn too much for benefits, but only just over the limit so we are super squeezed. A school residential came up for DS2 this year and he just can’t go as I don’t have the money. We have sold everything we can, not sure what else we can do, but we feel pretty abandoned by the government. We have to care for DS1 and his disability, but the financial and emotional hit we have taken because of it is huge.
Sorry to hear that…after a decade of austerity I think we were all looking forward to reaping the rewards of that decade, which was tough for so many. Alas, it looks like actually things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. And yes, whilst Brexit alone isn’t responsible for our situation, it has undeniably made things so much harder.
Fordian · 09/10/2021 22:33

@Livelovebehappy

I’m same as someone upthread - live in Yorkshire, and apart from the first day or two of panic buying with fuel, the petrol stations are back to normal. No queuing, no panic buying. Supermarket shelves seem to be fully stocked. But I agree, everything seems so unpredictable atm, and scary. Not sure that anyone else though could do any different/better than Boris. I look at opposition parties, and there’s not one of them i would say is competent enough to run the country. It just feels we have no-one to turn to to resolve anything.
We can look to ourselves. We can decide not to vote Tory. We can email our MP daily (if Tory) and remind them of the 'deal' we struck with them.

Right now, all may seem well in the world- but a tripling of gas prices? Over winter?

I can't think that'll all seem 'normal'.

Roussette · 09/10/2021 22:34

Makes no sense to me. No iceberg lettuce? I mean is that really IT when people say there is “no food on the shelves” ?

I was making a point. And it's not just that

BunsyGirl · 09/10/2021 22:35

@jgw1 Err no, I was talking about the cost of holidays…which is apparently due to the collapse in the exchange rate post-Brexit…except that the pound is stronger against the dollar now…

Well the high paid pay Johnson and his mates, so why would he raise taxes on them?
ivykaty44 · 09/10/2021 22:35

Government need to look after the British people b4 trying to help the world

they will, but only if there bank balance is appropriately rich, otherwise they'll look after foreigners if there might be some corruption in it for them

TatianaBis · 09/10/2021 22:36

We have to thank those who were eager to take the “short term pain” for the “long term gain” of Brexit.

On the plus side it might be the end of the Tories as the 70s did for Labour. I wonder if we’ll get another IMF bailout.

I'm a bit confused, my holiday this year cost the same as it did last year, and didn't involve any dollars, what with it being in the UK and all.

Second gen born British Indians can still be Little Englanders tho.
baroqueandblue · 09/10/2021 22:37

Yep, and I remember where it originated:

"'Keep Calm and Carry On' was one of three key messages created by Britain's wartime propaganda department, the Ministry of Information, made famous as the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell's novel, 1984." Confused

About fucking time.
ProlesOnParole · 09/10/2021 22:37

The Tories are bad news for the economy but loads of English vote for them because they're posh. I don't think they even think that they're good politicians. It's more that the English think the natural and correct order of things is to be ruled by posh people they don't particularly like. Similar to why there's still a monarchy and why that monarchy gets away with the stuff it does. Gives everyone something to moan about. Well there's certainly plenty to fucking moan about now.

Samedaysameshit · 09/10/2021 22:38

I think the sudden realisation that people who actually make this country function deserve a proper wage and big business can’t just get desperate poor people for abroad to keep millions of people on artificially low wages is a good thing.

sjxoxo · 09/10/2021 22:39

@ThirdElephant you are right to a degree but the welfare system in the UK is dire & underfunded. The system we have is unfair & the funding priorities are choices made by Tory government; this should be improved aswell as wages. The idea there ‘isn’t enough money’ is simply not true; it’s propaganda peddled by conservatives. Those with means, big business & very wealthy, do not pay enough tax in the UK. xo

CatKittyCatCatKittyCatCat · 09/10/2021 22:40

Tory governments, that’s what happened to this country.
