What is happening to the uk? No food on the shelves, the cost of living has become extortionate coupled with stagnating wages it seems this is a country where unless your in the higher income bracket you really can't afford to live anymore.
Poverty is going to be rife I dread to think the amount of people who will be choosing between food or heating this year.
Aibu to think this country has gone to shit of the likes we have not seen for a long time.
I am lower income and feel like I can't afford to live anymore.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 09/10/2021 20:00

And also boris should be hanging his head in shame at the absolute state of this country under mainly tory rule and basically the mess he has made whilst being our prime minister.

There is already a thread about this - makes for depressing reading

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 09/10/2021 20:01

Yeah, it’s almost like Brexit was a bad idea, who knew!

Ilovegreentomatoes · 09/10/2021 20:02

Sorry I didn't see the other thread.Just shocked how bad it is here at the moment just needed a rant.

This was all entirely predictable. But why listen to so-called "experts"!

ThirdElephant · 09/10/2021 20:03

I think there are teething problems certainly, and COVID definitely hasn't helped matters!

What will make the difference going forward is if we actually force businesses to pay people a fair wage with decent working conditions, or whether the government capitulate to the businesses and allow them to continue to bring in cheap labour from overseas so that they can maximise profits.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 09/10/2021 20:03

Not sure it can all be down to Brexit although obviously a part of it.

FreeBritnee · 09/10/2021 20:04

I was listening to the news today talking about power shortages globally. To be honest I wish it was just Brexit as that at least feels temporary. Global fuel shortages sound like Armageddon to me. I’m honestly frightened.

Suzi888 · 09/10/2021 20:05

Humans have happened, with their panic buying ways!

I can’t see that many people genuinely having to choose between food and heating and if they are, then they need to take a good look at their expenses.
My job involves working with people who are struggling and when you sit down to look at their finances, there are astronomical sky tv packages, mobile phone packages, personal ‘grooming’ costs, cigarettes, alcohol, constant minor home improvement costs (new rugs, sofas, colour schemes etc.) Brand new cars, designer clothing… maybe I’ve been in the field too long!

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 09/10/2021 20:06

It’s the absolute definition of ‘fuck around and find out’.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 09/10/2021 20:06

Also state of nhs, not able to see a doctor face to face fuel crisis so many things going wrong right now. If anyone has any words of wisdom how things might get better soon it would be much appreciated as all feels pretty helpless right now.

Blankspace4 · 09/10/2021 20:06

Definitely feels grim.

Food, fuel, and power shortages.

It’s like going back to the 1970s.

I’m certainly worried about food price and energy inflation this winter.

@WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy

No one really. And there’s a lot of things being put down to brexit which isn’t. For eg my phone is a manager for a uk haulage company who this last time last year had 300 drivers on the road. Now he’s got 100. The total lost to brexit is exactly 1 (polish). He lost the other 200 because the drivers need two yearly medicals and they can’t get doctors appointments because of Covid.
SpindleWhirl · 09/10/2021 20:07

Can someone please link to the other thread, thanks.

Winniemarysarah · 09/10/2021 20:08

My dh, not phone 🙄

JingleCatJingle · 09/10/2021 20:08

No food or fuel shortages in NI, but we have the protocol.
Blame Brexit.

FreeBritnee · 09/10/2021 20:10

Also we now apparently don’t have enough wind to power the bloody turbines!!! Climate change has influenced this across Europe. Plus why is it like summer in October? This all feels like it’s happening so fast.

It really does. We have known about climate change for many years but the last couple of years have really started to show it
Burtknowsbest · 09/10/2021 20:12

2 years ago living in the south east as a single parent, in social housing and on a salary of 28k I still had very little disposable income after my rent and bills were paid. I dreaded anything breaking down that would need a few hundred to sort out and it that would take me a couple of months to catch up.

Roll on a couple of years, chronic health issues out of the blue that have left me too unwell to work and currently surviving on 985 a month UC, £700 a month social housing rent and the rest left for bills and food… it’s always been like this for those of us that live close to the edge and have no safety net but now it’s just dire… needless to say that I have never voted Tory

I’m assuming you’ll be happy to pay the massive price increase that it will cost businesses to implement this ideal? On top of the increased energy prices etc?
Ilovegreentomatoes · 09/10/2021 20:14

If tory get in at the next election....well really I give up.

I must be lucky, obviously I see what is happening in the news but where I am fuel ran out for a day or so and been fine since, not really any problem getting the food we wanted and not really seen any bare shelves, and got face to face doctors appointment within a week. Certainly doesn't feel like summer here either, been wearing my winter jacket all week. We have however been affected by energy prices. I can see how with that some families will choose between heating and eating this year. I'm sorry you feel like that
