What age is Paw Patrol for?

Bluerasperry · 09/10/2021 14:31

I've seen a few threads on here where people have said their 6YO kids like Paw Patrol. Which has left me a bit Confused.

My 6YO DS is of the opinion that Paw Patrol is for babies. I can't say any of his class mates like it either. I'm secretly quite glad my DC enjoy other things and I'm no longer subjected to 'Rubble on the double' anymore.

(Disclaimer - A lot of my parenting choices are very un- mumsnet and I wonder if I'm a terrible parent for exposing my DC to the dangers of Pokemon, Bakugan and Minecraft at a delicate age).

I've not really asked a question, have I? Do your school age kids like Paw Patrol or not?

My dog is around 16 months old and she loves it. Hope that helps. Grin

Luzina · 09/10/2021 14:34

My friend’s six yr old still really likes it. They’re all different though aren’t they? The thing is to support them to make their own choices. Which clearly you’ve done

Puppalicious · 09/10/2021 14:35

18 mo - 4ish - toddler & preschool. My 5 yo might watch if toddler is but would never choose it.

Newmumatlast · 09/10/2021 14:36

Does it matter? Your post is quite judgemental with the Confused face. You may not mean it that way but I personally couldnt be anything other than meh about what other people like. It is up to them. If 6 year olds like Paw Patrol that's fine. Doesn't mean anything in terms of their development. Sometimes older kids like younger stuff as it makes them feel happy and is a link to childhood - and that's pre teens and teens... the age you're talking about is still primary. Don't give up any more headspace to this.

My kids hate it and have never watched it

My six year old dog hates it, always barks at it.

I'd say 6 is probably the upper age range but not too old.

Bit of a shit show though isn't it? Can't put my finger on why but it's definitely in the "avoid at all ages" category for me.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 09/10/2021 14:38

My 5 year old has just rediscovered it after 12 months and is loving it again

VinoBianca · 09/10/2021 14:39

My five year old loves it and has done for some time

Nightbringer · 09/10/2021 14:41

My son watched it when he was about 4.

My niece watches it now at 7.

I have never really concerned myself with 'what age is this aimed at' if I think its inappropriate for my child I will turn it off. My kids grew up watching the marvel films even though they were mainly classified as 12 .

But I really don't like the 'X is for babies' if a child enjoys something, they enjoy it. Doesn't matter if another child has grown out it.

I also don't think your choices are un-mumsent though, either.

I'm not personally judgemental. I just know my own kids were about 3 when they enjoyed this kind of stuff, as were most of their peers. So I do presume kids of a similar age have also outgrown it.

I must admit, I didn't enjoy being subjected to Paw Patrol when my kids did watch it. I much preferred PJ Masks if I'm honest.

A few friends have DC around that age who still love Paw Patrol. I don’t think anything of it.

DH is 37 and still loves Thundercats so I guess some things just keep hold of us! Grin

DS is 3yo and doesn’t like Peppa Pig (thankfully) or Paw Patrol. I’m trying to nurture an interest in Bluey so I can watch it guilt free, but he wanders off after the theme tune finishes.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 09/10/2021 14:44

You sound weirdly smug about this. Being hugely judgemental of how small children spend their leisure time isn’t a great look. You’re not a better parent because your kid has gone off a particular tv show.

Bluerasperry · 09/10/2021 14:45

@ReeseWitherfork I hear you on that! It was all the stupid catch phrases I hated "Chase is on the case". And the mayor with a chicken in her handbag.

@Wowcherarestalkingme Oh dear. I really hope my kids don't rediscover it again.

My son liked it aged 2-6 and just sold on all his paw patrol stuff aged 7.

Hang in there, I cracked my two year old. Just kept putting Bluey on and now he'll ask for it.
Mamette · 09/10/2021 14:47

It’s for preschool age but if a 5 or 6 year old still liked it I wouldn’t be Confused

My 5yo hasn’t watched it in about a year but still has many ultimate rigs cluttering up his bedroom which he is loath to part with. Not sure what I’m going to do about that. Why do they have to be so big? We also have the bloody paw patroller which is about a metre long. And the sea patroller Sad

I'm not smug at all. Just curious more than anything.

There are a lot of things I allow my kids to do that the MN hive mind is against (think TVs in bedrooms etc). I'm trying to work out if it's my kids that are the exception.

TheKeatingFive · 09/10/2021 14:48

My 7 year old begged to be taken to the movie to 'look after' his younger brother 😆

His class are all very indignant that it's too babyish for them. They protest too much methinks.

Be careful what you wish for though. Kids tv gets worse and worse as they get older. I'd take Chase and the gang any day over the relentless drivel that is Pokemon.

FlamesEmbersAshes · 09/10/2021 14:49

You sound oddly smug about the fact that your DC has ‘outgrown’ Paw Patrol. Do you think it makes him more mature than those that still enjoy it? More intelligent?

FWIW, I’m pushing 40, have a postgrad degree and have been known to watch and enjoy Ben and Holly. 🤷‍♀️

Mamette · 09/10/2021 14:49

I love Ben and Holly.

Whinge · 09/10/2021 14:49

I have to agree with another poster I really don't like the 'X is for babies' if a child enjoys something, they enjoy it. Doesn't matter if another child has grown out it.

I feel like some parents are in a rush to move their children onto something more grown up.

TeenMinusTests · 09/10/2021 14:50

I really hate the 'X is for babies' attitude.

DD2 liked 'young' things for quite a while and received a lot of judgmental rubbish like this. I remember the day she came home and put all her cuddly toys out of her bed and lay there rigid and unrelaxed because of comments at school. A few days later they were back in and she was happy again.

I think there is far too much pressure to push children along milestones these days. Which is why you get things like 'My 7yo has outgrown playing with toys' and other such nonsense.

EllieSattler · 09/10/2021 14:50

DD had stopped watching it but enjoyed Paw Patrol The Movie in the cinema (it was a lot better than the programme) and had a brief resurgence of interest after that.
