Did they seem ‘normal’? Or did you get a strange feeling about them?

OP posts:

@ILoveJamaica

I met Justice Ngema - the guy who locked a nurse in his boot for 10 days. She was close to death when she was found. I had to take a statement from him when he was is prison. I knew what he'd done (obviously). He was handsome and charming and gave off no bad vibes whatsoever. Which is quite unnerving really!
I know what you mean. I worked with him in an elderly home. Had close connections with the case. But he was a loner when I met him but he then socialised in similar circles and appeared to be overly social.
Smokeyrobinson · 10/10/2021 23:57

I did watch it and yes I agree - it it really was the ordinary dullness of the man that made him all the more chilling.

Stitchybitch79 · 11/10/2021 00:14

Was about to say this. People feelingsurprised or disbelieving people, please remember just HOW notorious the Krays were and how well known. Of course a lot of people are going to have known them, and those people if they see this thread, will respond to it.

SingingInTheShitHouse · 11/10/2021 00:17

X3 🥴

A neighbour was found guilty of multiple rape & murder. He used to knock on our door whenever I had a gang of girlfriends round before heading out to a club. Hassling us to go to a club he DJd at. He was really unnerving

Gary Glitter, nothing creepy at all, if anything more fatherly & looked after us teen girls as we knew his son Confused

A fiends dad had worked closely with the Kray twins. He was a kind, very charming & always immaculately dressed old man.

BiteySpears · 11/10/2021 00:31

Yes I have. A female murderer who killed a man and allegedly drank his blood.
She was charming, friendly and intelligent. She was in her fifties when I met her and had committed the crime when she was 23 so I was unsure if she had changed or was just very manipulative. She had been abused physically and sexually as a child but had had a lot of therapy in prison.

HollaHolla · 11/10/2021 00:34

My uncle’s ex-neighbour is a convicted pedophile. He had tonnes of child porn. Really grim.
His house lay empty for years, then when he was released, he was on a tag there. He was moved on pretty quickly in the end, as it was a small country town, with a lot of families.
My Uncle was VERY glad when he was moved.

JacquelineCarlyle · 11/10/2021 01:02

@weegiemum

An ex loyalist paramilitary from Northern Ireland who had reformed and was involved in peace and reconciliation work. He'd become a Christian in jail. Really nice guy, reserved and you could see that a bit of him was still haunted by his past.
Me too - wonder if it's the same guy?
Stitchybitch79 · 11/10/2021 08:18

It doesn't take much to throw a punch though. And of they then bang their head on the pavement or similar and die...

LizzieW1969 · 11/10/2021 09:02

Me too - wonder if it's the same guy?

And me as well. He speaks publicly at a lot of churches, sharing his story.

@BiteySpears Did this happen in Queensland Australia?

*Me too - wonder if it's the same guy?*

I think there are a few of them who do it - the one I know (or knew, not seen him in 25 years) got out of prison in c. 1995 and was really the loveliest, kindest bloke (think he served about 13 years). He looked big and 'rough' but seemed such a gentle giant - I was shocked when l found out as would never have thought it at all.

He was going out with a good friend of mine at the time and treated her very well. After they split up, he did go on to marry someone else and they had a little girl (think she'd be about 18 now).

I often think about his victims family though - would they be happy that he was doing something positive with his life or would it just be unbearable for them that he got to turn his life around whilst their son was dead (for no reason other than walking down the street and being Catholic)? I truly hope they're ok.

I nearly forgot that I also met child killer Mary Bell when I was 16/17. She was the barmaid in a pub we drank in back in the 70s when it was easier to get a beer in a pub when still underage. She was very pretty, shy & sweet & I sensed a lot of sadness in her. I spoke to her quite a bit & she obviously felt uncomfortable with the "banter" from guys at the bar as you'd see her start to hunch up looking scared. I liked her. I was incredibly shocked when she suddenly left to find out who she actually was.

CherryRipe1 · 11/10/2021 11:21

@TinaYouFatLard

A distant family member was “on holiday” with Rose West. She said that she was chilling and manipulative.
DDs prison guard freind said exactly the same!
Gonnagetgoing · 11/10/2021 11:34

I've just remembered OP said did the infamous criminal seem normal or did people get a strange feeling about them.

The 2 guys I mentioned who murdered a man - one was called a nickname - like 'Basher' - but he was always said to be and was, lovely and 'wouldn't harm a fly'. His brother was called e.g. Tony and everyone got a dodgy/nasty/evil vibe from him. Both were bouncers in clubs too. When they murdered this man though, all of us were so shocked at 'Basher' doing this as we really didn't think he would - his brother always seemed the nastier of the two.

My DGM was best friends with a rough woman, no idea what she was into, probably petty crime. She certainly came across as someone you wouldn't trust.

My uncle (not a criminal as such), no, no way normal and very strange. He was strange with family and in public too though so wasn't hidden. But he was said to get other people to do his dirty work for him. To this day I'm unsure whether it's rumour or if true that the models he went out with if they made him angry he got their faces cut as it was something my DM told me.

Having read about Mary Bell's childhood (abusive etc) I'm not surprised she did what she did.
QueenBee52 · 11/10/2021 11:48

Mary Bells parents (and I use the term loosely) should have been jailed for the vile abuse of her.. IMO.

RockinHorseShit · 11/10/2021 12:07

Absolutely. I remembered the murders & so read her story after realising who I'd met. What she did was beyond awful, no getting away from that, but her "parents" are 100% to blame without a doubt. I always felt she had a haunted look about her, which made sense knowing what she had done & been through.

clpsmum · 11/10/2021 12:25

@QueenBee52 absolutely! Mary bell was just as much a victim as those poor boys she killed. Her parents definitely should've faced prison. Such a sad horrible situation. Glad she got life long anonymity for her and her child

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 11/10/2021 15:09

No it was in wales x

wolfmom · 11/10/2021 15:13

One of my exes was in court for assault then he was locked up as he was a paedophile.

fairycakes1234 · 11/10/2021 15:14

@Blessex

EmeraldShamrock *If you accidentally kill someone then it is still black and white to me. A moment of madness? It was a physical fight that should have never happened the victim hit his head on the pavement. The poor guy who died will never move on, I'm not trying to justify cousins actions at all. I know a mother who lost her son in similar circumstances. He intervened in a fight, was punched, hit his head on the pavement and died. Very sad.*

I am sorry. But who has a physical fight on the street. It’s not the norm and indeed can kill someone. It’s not unlucky that they got killed. When you go to hit or punch someone you want to hurt them.

@Blessex Get over yourself, accidents do happen, maybe they were young and got into a fight, maybe if he hadnt of struck his head they would have shook hands and moved on, you dont know the circumstances, accidents can happen, so being so judgemental. It hasnt happned you or yours so you will never know what its like.
peaceanddove · 11/10/2021 15:24

DH was a business acquaintance of a local gangster type who ran most of the doormen in the Midlands, among other (dodgy) businesses. This man's brother was murdered in a shooting over territorial rights! He also was the subject of a TV documentary quite a few years ago.

We had dinner with him a few times and he was very polite and charming, the perfect host. His house was stunning although a tad Footballer's Wives for my taste. He would send one of his drivers to collect us and take us home and they were always built like the proverbial brick shit house.

ChocolateRiver · 11/10/2021 18:41

This thread really is quite compelling. I can’t believe the amount of murderers people know. Frightening really.

Lincslady53 · 11/10/2021 18:52

Met Rolf Harris several times with his art. We used to own a gallery that sold it. He was very professional and a gent. We were very surprised when he was outed.

NameChangeWithACold · 11/10/2021 19:02

I've met quite a few due to work! (In prisons!)

With some you get a vibe of 'you are really scary!' or 'you are really weird, I'd never have let my kids within a cm of you'.

I did meet a super nice gangster though! .. well clearly he wasn't that nice given his crimes (which included murder among many other things. V notorious!), but I did really like him! Kind of bloke I'd have been friends with in different circumstances if I'd not known the crime(s) and not met him in prison!! - and that still freaks me out because it means anyone you know could well have another side!! or a dark past, or have spent quite sometime in prison!

All had one thing in common - the worse the crime (particularly the weird ones or horrific ones), the worse their own childhood had been Sad
