Is the UK about to collapse?

Sorry - There was probably a better way to put this.

Does anyone else have a feeling that we are close to some collapse, explosion, disintegration of society ...

With gas prices, petrol shortages, inflation, Brexit fall out, Covid, gaslighting government etc

I feel like we're on the edge of something - big ...

I know it's not even a minor headline in the current shitshow, but our dentist's receptionist told me today that there will be no more 6 month or annual check-ups at the practice for NHS patients who don't pay. Only treatment, and for the foreseeable future only emergency treatment.

davidbritten65 · 08/10/2021 21:36

We can just switch off the news. Irrespective of whether you voted Brexit or remain, Johnson is a disaster as he is a persistent liar over the last 30 years. I am currently in France on holiday, everyone is respectful, wearing masks and getting on with their life. They have fuel, toilet rolls and enough canards for Christmas. We have become divisive polarised and split. Exactly what Johnson wants.

Peggytheredhen · 08/10/2021 21:39

I didn't until I clicked on this thread.

I think in the grand scheme of shit periods in time, this would probably still sit somewhere between OK and Good.

Penfield · 08/10/2021 21:49

But my question is ‘are we about to collapse?’ Now feels ok. I suppose if you’re unaware of what’s going on in the world you can’t see what’s coming.

How do people work/function properly in society without knowing what’s going on in the world? I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t know what’s going on in the world.

I think you can know what’s going on but avoid the more emotive anxiety inducing media designed for clicks

It helps understanding without the panic part ime

SarcasticIntrovert · 08/10/2021 22:10

Also can anyone from the Dentistry world comment on an increase in NHS Customer prices? I half overheard a conversation so am not sure if it's correct or not.

Daffi · 08/10/2021 22:22

Don't overreact, that's what causes problems, although it would help if Boris and the idiots weren't in charge.

Sarahlou63 · 08/10/2021 22:25

For all the posters harking back to the good old days of the power cuts of the 1970's (and yes, I remember them) you're missing the point. Back then there were coal fires, candles, cash, landlines and independent local shops - plus communities who knew and looked out for each other (and a generation who'd lived through the war just 25 years earlier and were well equipped to deal with hardship).

If and when the power goes off for longish periods in the UK this winter people won't be able to heat their homes, communicate, buy anything (try asking for tick in Waitrose) or be able to work. The developed world is so much more reliant on electricity for everything now. There's no comparison.

@keffie12
Yes they have shortages of drivers in Europe however they don't have empty shelves and so on.

Where do you live? You need to move. 🤔 No empty shelves round here. Although cheap fizzy water can sometimes be difficult to get.

Madisonbridges · 08/10/2021 22:40

@Iseestupidpeople
And considering that Churchill killed millions of Indians with a manufactured famine so he could profit, Johnson seems to try and follow suit!

Johnson has killed millions? Of Indians? By famine? How is this not a top news story?

IncessantNameChanger · 08/10/2021 22:43

I'm not feeling it. It was very scary at the start of covid and I think that is about the most scared I have been of society since the riots of a few years back.

But we all got through the shortages and panic buying. I'm still queuing for petrol but I have filled up twice since this petrol.issue started.

Theres nothing wrong with filtering out the news. I'm pretty scared of terrorism but watching it from my sofa does nothing to stop it. So why watch it and keep on top of it constantly? Generally we have very little control in major world altering events

Bertiebiscuit · 08/10/2021 22:46

Yep - UK going to the dogs

Daffi · 08/10/2021 22:48

We did just wear more clothes in the 70's which wasn't such a bad thing. I live on the south coast now, I rarely put the heating on, not once last winter. It was fine.

Thekolschisonme · 08/10/2021 23:07

So how can people vote thoughtfully without keeping an eye on the news ? Or is encouraging people to avoid it or brush it off as sensationalist just encouraging tribalism ? Don't be curious or questioning, you might change your opinion on things more like Hmm

Thekolschisonme · 08/10/2021 23:11

@MarshaBradyo agreed. The guardian, Times, FT and Independent are pretty good. No panic just factual reporting. Daily mail or express not so much. Funnily enough tory supporting but sensationalist and critical....

FrozenWillow · 08/10/2021 23:25

OP

I've been listening to "It's all gone to fuck" by Stanley Odd on youtube. I listened to it back in 2016. I do think the UK will collapse but not in the way people are expecting. I think the nations of the UK, England, Scotland, Wales and NI, will split from each other. I just hope it does not cause a massive fall out between our nations. I want to remain pals.

wellstopdoingitthen · 08/10/2021 23:47

@vivainsomnia

Only of you read the media every day. That's what they want people to read. It sells.
I'm looking in my local supermarket with gaps in the shelves & the local petrol station with a sign saying 'no petrol'. Went out last week for a pub meal with a friend & over 50% of the menu was 'unavailable' as they hadn't had a delivery.

It's under our noses I'm afraid. No newscasters required.

julieca · 08/10/2021 23:58

People were sharing experiences on social media of shortages in shops long before the press covered it. You can't stop people talking about the realities.

Exactly this. I’m just horrified at how many people think it’s a good idea to ignore everything that’s happening because apparently the media’s lying.
Thekolschisonme · 09/10/2021 00:05

False news. Project fear. All part of the trumpian handbook as promoted by Steve Bannon and other alt right propagandists... Hasn't Johnson meet him to discuss tactics ? And people are falling for it. Again. Sad

wherearemychickens · 09/10/2021 00:10

It's not false news though is it when I drive to the supermarket past three closed petrol stations with no fuel, and then get to the supermarket to find gaps on shelves in every single fucking aisle.

Blossomtoes · 09/10/2021 00:11

What are people falling for? And what does the government stand to gain from it?

wherearemychickens · 09/10/2021 00:11

That's supply chains breaking down when we haven't even put in place the import controls we're supposed to have. So it's going to get worse before it gets better.

wherearemychickens · 09/10/2021 00:13

Well enough are apparently falling for believing Boris Johnson is fit to govern anything. I wouldn't trust him with my DD's pocket money.

Can I ask where you live that this is happening?
