Is the UK about to collapse?

Penfield · 07/10/2021 14:20

Sorry - There was probably a better way to put this.

Does anyone else have a feeling that we are close to some collapse, explosion, disintegration of society ...

With gas prices, petrol shortages, inflation, Brexit fall out, Covid, gaslighting government etc

I feel like we're on the edge of something - big ...

It does feel like the country is going to hell in a handcart. It’s just a web of spin and lies.

Chakraleaf · 07/10/2021 14:32

It feels unnerving. Things will get bad soon :(

BringPizza · 07/10/2021 14:32

“Ah yes - we weren't sure whether we were going to die of AIDS or a nuclear war.

Honestly, compared to that, COVID is a piece of piss”

Between the AIDS tombstone adverts at the bus stop and the stupid leaflets about painting your windows white and sitting under the dining table I think we were all battle hardened before we left primary school…

ballsdeep · 07/10/2021 14:32

@Feelslikealot

No, we are not and stupid posts like this just encourages peoples anxiety and causes panic. But no doubt you'll get a thread full of people agreeing with you.
I think the same FFS. People are going crazy
mbosnz · 07/10/2021 14:32

Well, I'm glad I've got two passports, that's for sure!

TrickorTreacle · 07/10/2021 14:33

@Pythonista

If you read MN. Then yes.

Stay away from the news

This.

Only on Mumsnet you see shit like this.

OP - YABU

Whitefire · 07/10/2021 14:34

I think it shows have fragile our lives are, as in it doesn't take very much for things to start going wrong.

takenforgrantednana · 07/10/2021 14:34

if you read about the great depression back in 929-1939, there are far more similarities in what we re all going through now than you would first think have a read if you dont know your history - www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Great-Depression/

Ifailed · 07/10/2021 14:35

Ah yes - we weren't sure whether we were going to die of AIDS or a nuclear war.
Honestly, compared to that, COVID is a piece of piss

Add to that IRA bombs (in London), Thatcher was denying the existence of society, Ronald Reagan was launching 'star wars' and Chernobyl blew up. The 1980s were certainly more scary than the 2020s are.

Naaaaah · 07/10/2021 14:35

So many? You mean about 8 people? Ever thought of a job writing for the Daily Mail? The zombies are not coming and life will continue to tick along. Stop sensationalising everything.

fitsandgiggles · 07/10/2021 14:35

Not really, but I try avoid the news/papers.whatever is happening is happening I just want to enjoy my family, and not spend my time worrying.

toconclude · 07/10/2021 14:38

No, of course not. Stop catastrophising. It's pretty insulting as well to people who have real experience of societal collapse, war, invasion etc.

Underamour · 07/10/2021 14:38

The newspapers are creating dramatic headlines so you think:-“Oh no! Something awful is going to happen!” And stay glued to their ever more dramatic narrative. Grin There isn’t a fuel crisis. Visas are being sorted for foreign workers, the DVLA is working through its backlog and life goes on. But if the papers said this you wouldn’t read them.

We are all anxious and newly aware that life isn’t as secure as we previously thought it was. Catastrophising is somewhat inevitable given those circumstances.

The trouble with thinking this way is it creates more instability and panic and that is what caused the fuel problems. You will get through it. Regardless of what “it” is you will survive. The worry isn’t changing anything you are just scaring yourself. Stay strong.

Justcallmebebes · 07/10/2021 14:38

I think compared to the 70's and 80's things are positively rosy. Honestly each generation has its "end of civilisation as we know it" moments. This too will pass

In the 70's we had 3 day weeks, constant striking, constant power cuts and sky high inflation to name but a few things

OhWhyNot · 07/10/2021 14:39

No

We are in for a few very difficult years

The media need you to keep reading without drama the story is full and most will lose interest

Fairyliz · 07/10/2021 14:39

I’m just an ordinary person living a ordinary life in an ordinary town.
If I watch the news or read MN it feels like the end of the world is imminent. However I then open my eyes and look around and everyone is just getting on with things.
Yes it’s true terrible things happen, but that has been the case throughout history. Life is sometimes hard and sometimes unfair but it’s no worse than it has been in the past.
You do know mankind is just a blip of nature and we all die one day? There is no higher purpose, so enjoy life when you can and grit your teeth through the horrible bits.

OhWhyNot · 07/10/2021 14:39

*Is boring

Bloody auto correct

ShrikeAttack · 07/10/2021 14:40

Yes, we'll all be gnawing on the bones of our neighbours by Christmas.

Underamour · 07/10/2021 14:40

@justcallmebebes exactly this. In the 80’s we were all TERRIFIED of nuclear war with Russia.

Eventually you get bored of being perpetually anxious.

Staffy1 · 07/10/2021 14:40

It definitely feels different from the normal ups and downs to me. Things seem to be getting worse all at once on a larger scale and there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe the last year and half have just got to me.

madisonbridges · 07/10/2021 14:40

I feel sorry for the children of people on here who are saying the uk is going to collapse or explode. That worry is going to be transmitted to them in some form. No wonder we have such depressed young people. When I was young, my parents just got on with things and conveyed the message everything was fine. So I just lived my life. The panic that is spread on SM must become debilitating to those who take it on board.

Justcallmebebes · 07/10/2021 14:41

Talking about the nuclear threat my generation grew up with, we kids were shown animated films showing a nuclear strike and docuseries of the reality of nuclear war at school. Scared the shit out of us all and the official advice as to what to do in the event of a nuclear attack was to hide under our desks!

mustlovegin · 07/10/2021 14:42
Biscuit

Have you been drinking OP?

notangelinajolie · 07/10/2021 14:42

Stop watching/reading the news. Life is ticks along quite nicely when you cut out the drama.

Staffy1 · 07/10/2021 14:43

@SpittinKitten

Seeing as the washing machine I ordered a month back has had its delivery shunted back yet another fortnight from today, I'd say yes. Just to clarify, the collapse will be caused by me exploding.
Oh hell, I couldn’t be doing without a washing machine for that long!
