Not a wish list btw.
I'm mid thirties and I think I will see the end of:
Petrol and diesel cars
Cows milk (majority drinking soy/oat)
Pork being eaten by most
Smoking (that's hopeful)
People casually throwing around comments about people's weight
Royal family
Legacy benefits :(
Landline telephones
Desktop computers
A lot of pubs :( :(

On the NHS I was recently talking to a colleague who had switched from a mental health service bought by a private company. She was a very experienced call handler for the psychologies service, often who would receive calls from people in crisis who were very distressed.
Private company starting timing the calls and going back to the call handlers asking why they were taking so long on certain calls. The colleague explained that the callers were often very distressed, bordering on suicidal. The private company then introduced a script which was designed to cut down 'unnecessary' dialogue. If this is the way private companies are going to address mental health then I hope to God our country doesn't go that way! Yes as an NHS employee I see that some parts are badly run but it generally provides a brilliant service. I work mostly with people who have never been able to work and wouldn't have been eligible for health insurance, scary to think what would have happened to them if there was no NHS.

Thin people as standard

Agree with PP that this disappeared already, maybe 20 yrs ago, at least in most rich countries.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 07/10/2021 08:14

@IndecentCakes

I live in the Med. You'll have to prise their pork from their cold, dead hands here.
I'm currently in Spain. So true! 🤣🤣🤣
whynotwhatknot · 07/10/2021 08:14

most high street shops and physical banks

nhs

cash
petrol and diesel cars

PattiPritell · 07/10/2021 08:16

Millions of vehicles sitting around doing nothing for 90% odd of the time will be seen as a foolish concept

This is a good point but if you live in a rural area imagine how many miles there might be between pick ups and how many double journeys.

Yep this is true. Thin isn't standard even in Britain anymore. Fat is common. Of course so are health issues.

Religion (hopefully)

@Insert1x20p

Why is pork being singled out from other meats? Possibly because (1) pigs are v intelligent compared to other animals- can plan and empathise, and (2) pigs act as a cross species vector for diseases (to be fair, chickens do as well).

I actually disagree re pork (China) and think that lab grown meat will focus on beef which is the big climate problem due to both rumination and grazing, and also makes more sense on a cost basis. At the moment the costs are way too high for lab grown to be commercially feasible, but as they reduce it's easier to hit a comparable price point for a fillet steak vs a chicken breast. Also, I think elimination of raised meat will take way longer globally than any of our lifetimes if you think about how people in developing countries are adopting more meat rich diets. Pigs also relatively easy and cheap to rear vs beef cattle in most of the world.

My predictions (which will almost certainly be wrong)- Gone by 2080, for reference

  • Cash
  • Typing
  • Self driven cars in developed countries - I expect legality of driving your own car to vary by country- depends a lot on whether driverless and driven cars can coexist.
  • Coal fired power stations but not gas fired
  • Most petrol/diesel cars, but not motorbikes
  • Wars about oil. There will be wars about water rights and agricultural land instead.
  • About 33% of the current Chinese and Japanese populations (natural decline)
As long as there are lawyers there will be typing.

, anyone?
CandidaAlbicans2 · 07/10/2021 08:32

Brachycephalic (shorter-nosed and flat-faced) dog breeds as we know them. Not that I expect the owners to care, but I hope the veterinary industry has enough clout to get changes to breed standards brought in. So hopefully, in my lifetime, dogs like Pugs, French bulldogs, Boston terriers and English bulldogs will develop longer noses and a better quality of life.

EmKayEm · 07/10/2021 08:36

Homo Sapiens.

felulageller · 07/10/2021 08:45

People owning their cars instead of PCP.

Maps

Watches

Single sex space

Fat shaming

State pension

Out of work benefits if you aren't severely disabled.

Council housing

Disposable nappies

Disposable coffee cups

MurielSpriggs · 07/10/2021 08:47

@EmKayEm

Homo Sapiens.
Pedant alert: unless you're a remarkably intelligent representative of another species, it is not possible for homo sapiens to cease to exist during your lifetime.
MadamMedea · 07/10/2021 08:48

Petrol and diesel powered cars
The Maldives
Polar bears
Snow leopards
Mountain gorillas
Tigers
Orangutans
Several whale species
Leatherback turtles
Scottish wildcats

RainbowBriteUk · 07/10/2021 08:52

I'd love to say trans/homophobia but there will always be someone with outdated and horrible opinions.

Agreed! I hate seeing pugs struggling to breathe properly.

I don't know anyone who doesn't drink cows milk so not so sure about that one. And what is your issue with pork?

Some people will always have an opinion on peoples weight, just as people have opinions on peoples gender/race......its not right but it will continue to happen.

NotMyJobToFixProblemsIMade · 07/10/2021 08:58

Fat shaming

Actually so far the trend is for this to increase, so unlikely to cease to exist, especially as being slim and fit is now a social marker of superiority for those to whom it applies. It is the one form of discrimination and hatred that normally nice people see fit to promote.

NotMyJobToFixProblemsIMade · 07/10/2021 09:00

NHS - if the Tories get their way

underneaththeash · 07/10/2021 09:03

People thinking that drinking dairy alternatives and heavily processed meat alternatives is in any way healthy.
Children being vegan.
Fat-shaming being a "thing", as opposed to being sensible advice from health care professionals.
Non-existent mental health care provision.

But definitely petrol and diesel cars, landlines are already being phased out.

AutumnAlmanack · 07/10/2021 09:10

I really, really hope that cash doesn't disappear. One day, yes one day the internet will collapse - it is inevitable. Nobody will have access to their money or anything else for that matter. It is utter madness that we are committing ourselves more and more to technology which probably hangs together on a wing and a prayer!

user6598 · 07/10/2021 09:12

Maps will continue to exist as they are most needed in places where phone and internet signals are worse, very foolish to go walking in the hills without a proper map, battery could also die.

drumandhake · 07/10/2021 09:12

@AutumnAlmanack I agree. I went on holiday without my bank card the other week, just had my phone and I felt so vulnerable. If my phone died or got stolen what would I have done? There's a lot to be said for having cash and a paper train ticket!

Also scared of what happened on handmaids tale where they froze all the women's bank accounts.
