To ask if these are acceptable to wear as school shoes?

My son has just been put into detention for the second day in a row for wearing the wrong shoes. He has been threatened with a fixed term exclusion too. Their uniform policy says if their shoes have laces they must be black and that they can’t be canvas. These look smart, they have black laces and they are leather. My DS has issues with his feet because of their shape and normal school shoes hurt him. We’ve tried so many different brands.

YANBU- these are acceptable as school shoes.

YABU- the school is right.

@Frumpypigskin

They wouldn't be acceptable at our school. The soles have to have a heel rather than be straight across like a trainer.
Why, other than stupid prejudice and an obsession with silly rules they have made up?
AFuturisticalSound · 05/10/2021 17:28

What's the point of asking here, unless they person who sets the rules for your school happens to see this post it's meaningless

The school sets the rules, it's up to them, You can't have got to secondary school without knowing all the issues around uniform policies

Have you practiced your sad face? I can't remember what the issue was but I saw a classic whole family sad off the other day in the local news about some school related nonsense

Boredhimtodeath · 05/10/2021 17:29

They are trainers. Is it a medical reason that is stopping him wearing shoes?

I’m a teacher and so many parents write notes saying they can’t get school shoes/school trousers to fit their kid and the majority of the time it’s just an excuse to make their life easier on a morning

Lovemusic33 · 05/10/2021 17:32

If the school rules say “no trainers” then yes they are not suitable for school. Dd1’s school don’t allow them but dd2’s school do (and she wears them). We respect the rules of both schools.

starfishmummy · 05/10/2021 17:33

From the top they look similar to the sort of shoe that is sold for old people with wide feet by somewhere like Cosyfeet! But I didn't notice the big tick.

But ask the school.

The trainers or shoes thing reminds me of my 6th form days when we could wear trousers but not jeans. Coloured denim was in fashion (giving my age away here) and there was many a debate about whether they were allowed as trousers or bammed as jeans.

Boredhimtodeath the OP explained the medical issue and subsequent surgery at 16:35. If you click "see all" on the opening post you see the original poster's subsequent posts, to avoid asking things which have already been answered.

The style would be ok at our school but not the visible branding.

RuthW · 05/10/2021 17:36

Look like trainers so no, not acceptable

dannydyerismydad · 05/10/2021 17:38

My DC primary would be fine with these. By all accounts the secondaries would not.

It boggles my mind a bit. Children are apparently too sedentary. Parents clog up the streets around schools ferrying their offspring to the door of the school. Yet the same children are compelled to wear uncomfortable shoes.

I wear trainers to walk to work, and keep a smart pair of shoes under my desk to change into if I need to. School kids don't have that option. No local schools seem to have cloakrooms for coats and changes of shoes any more.

Lindy2 · 05/10/2021 17:39

They look like smart black shoes to me. I wouldn't look at them and think they were trainers.

Your son has had an operation on his toes. He therefore has a known medical condition that impacts on his feet. I would suggest you approach the school and ask for a reasonable adjustment to normal school policy to accommodate your son's needs in terms of comfortable shoes. You may need to provide medical evidence to support your request but that shouldn't be difficult in the circumstances.

ladymuck111 · 05/10/2021 17:39

There pretty much what my son wears. On the school website ours say black converse style trainers are acceptable as long as there are no logos and they are leather.

Tittyfilarious81 · 05/10/2021 17:40

Our school would not allow those at all

MilduraS · 05/10/2021 17:40

They're about as unobtrusive as trainers get. I don't understand why schools have such ridiculous rules but if school rules say no trainers then they're right.

Echobelly · 05/10/2021 17:44

They are kind of trainery so not really school shoes, but detention is VU and really unfair - I think you say if it comes to it 'You need shoes are per guidance and you have until after the weekend to come in with the right kind'.

A lot of parents won't have the time or money to come up with school shoes over bloody night! Parents should be asked about circumstances - maybe they don't have the vast sums of money needed for school shoes and got given these? Maybe your kid has hard to fit feet and you'll need time to go to a shop to get replacements so need time etc. It's hardly the child's fault they can't magic up the right shoes.

TheSunIsStillShining · 05/10/2021 17:47

Similar issue here.
Don't give a toss about school regulation over genuine health issues.

LowlandLucky · 05/10/2021 17:47

They are trainers. If you don't like the rules of that school find another.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/10/2021 17:55

Speak to school and explain about his 6th toe, you can probably get a letter from your GP as well. What did he wear last year? Have you tried barefoot shoes, they tend to be wider and so would be less likely to rub?

Unless the school policy explicitly says 'no trainer brands' then I think you should question it. DD1 has been stopped in school and asked about her trousers several times, she has black M&S skin kind school trousers but teachers have called them 'jeans' Hmm. The school rules just say 'black trousers' and her trousers are clearly smart trousers, I do wonder about some teachers at times and what they think is achieved by wasting time questioning well behaved pupils about their clothing.

MyPatronusIsACat · 05/10/2021 18:05
@EarringsandLipstick
I also think it's an academy thing. LA comps are more normal and focused on what matters.
I agree.

As I said earlier, maybe the school, and teachers should focus on actually educating the children, and stop being so fucking anal about their bastard shoes.

Nellle · 05/10/2021 18:06

Talk about a drip feed!

Given the sixth toe, a conversation and a letter to the school will ensure he is allowed to wear these black trainers, I guarantee it.

ClinkeyMonkey · 05/10/2021 18:09

Personally, I think they look very smart, but my DS's school would say 'no' to those. They have photos of acceptable and unacceptable footwear and those shoes would be classed as a trainer. We have terrible problems finding comfortable school shoes too, as DS has narrow feet with a high instep. I have a high instep too and the wrong shoes cause my feet to cramp. DS is not great at doing up laces (he's a bit uncoordinated), but can't wear slip on's because they ... well ... slip offGrin

AmperoBlue · 05/10/2021 18:10

I think the saddest ( genuinely not sarcastically) but is that you say you haven’t much money but have bought him “ eye wateringly” expensive Nikes. Their expensive because it’s a Nike branded product . No other reason.
From a shop that has “ sport” in the name ( so likely you’ll end up with trainers).
I get what you say about his toe surgery. I’ve had bunion surgery on both feet and the scars did rub. However there are tons of trainer like shoes which you probably could have got away with. But branded trainers are clearly going to be a no,

EspressoDoubleShot · 05/10/2021 18:11

If there is a clinical reason for trainers get GP or podiatrist supporting letter that he has a condition that requires specific type of shoe for support & comfort
Fwiw, I think too many schools are unnecessarily strict and I sympathise with you.
However doesn’t matter

EspressoDoubleShot · 05/10/2021 18:12

However it doesn’t matter what the mn jury think as it’s up Tottenham school
Sympathetic to your predicament and this doesn’t warrant an exclusion

EspressoDoubleShot · 05/10/2021 18:13

Gah, I give up…up to the school. Not Tottenham school
