To ask if these are acceptable to wear as school shoes?

My son has just been put into detention for the second day in a row for wearing the wrong shoes. He has been threatened with a fixed term exclusion too. Their uniform policy says if their shoes have laces they must be black and that they can’t be canvas. These look smart, they have black laces and they are leather. My DS has issues with his feet because of their shape and normal school shoes hurt him. We’ve tried so many different brands.

YANBU- these are acceptable as school shoes.

YABU- the school is right.

God there is nothing wrong with them at all. Some of the rules are understandable but this one is ridiculous!

Needadviceagain · 05/10/2021 18:20

Totally fine in my kids school. My 2 wear a mix of vans, converse and black Adidas trainers. As long as its all black, it's fine. Other school in my catchment I'd a different story though! Same academy trust but much stricter and the shoes must be proper shoes.

They are trainers (Nike Air Jordan's) I'm afraid so rightly or wrongly most schools wouldn't allow them.
How much communication have you had with the school regarding his specific needs @CovidIsADick?

LeJessi · 05/10/2021 18:36

They are trainers not shoes - so if the school policy is no trainers then you are stuck. Trainers don't generally give the same support as traditional school shoes

If your child needs to wear specific shoes for medical reasons - ie to fit orthotics or special insoles the podiatrist will usually provide a letter about this for you.

0palescent · 05/10/2021 18:42

My son wears similar to school, but his school is OK with trainers, as long as they're entirely black like these. I think it's stupid to quibble over plain black footwear.

Peopleshouldsmilemore · 05/10/2021 18:51

I bought my son these after him trying on every single pair of black leather shool shoes in the world, or at least it felt that way. To all those saying they are madly expensive, a size 5 from Schuh was £38. Slightly cheaper than the "proper shoes" I'd tried to get him. Like the OP's son, my DS found all the alternatives uncomfy. He couldn't give a hoot they have the Nike Swoosh, just that he had shoes that fit him. Schools are mad, they are black leather and comfortable!

@Sommernacht89

Fucking ridiculous.why do schools concentrate on such a trivial matter and not put all their energy into providing good education.I am so glad,I havent been educated in this country and had to put up with ridiculous shoe and clothes issues.Most adults in Britain have zero fashion sense and look frumpy and old fashioned in comparison to european people.
Agree with your first sentence, but the rest of your post is just rude. Why so nasty? What have we in the UK done to you to make you so spiteful and vitriolic?

It's also a stupid ignorant comment, because you have not seen - or met every bloody person in Britain, so saying the BRITISH have zero fashion sense is a stupid generalisation, and is also utter bollocks.

ALSO, it's literally only been the last 12-13 years that some schools (academies mostly) have been anal and strict about uniform and footwear, so your comment that you're glad you weren't educated in the UK, is moot. (Unless you are under 23/24., which you are not.)

Makes me wonder why someone who loathes this country and its people so much stays here to be honest. I have seen a few of your posts quite recently, where you aim vitriol and bile at the British and at Britain, and it baffles me why you stay here if we are so loathsome.

If we said the same about people in mainland Europe we'd be xenophobic...
idontlikealdi · 05/10/2021 19:00

They're trainers.

AlpineSnow · 05/10/2021 19:02

Maybe everyone in sommernacht's school was rude and xenophobic so it's normal to her. So glad I didn't go there!

MyPatronusIsACat · 05/10/2021 19:12

Buggar! Now @Sommernacht89's post has been deleted, I bet mine will be because I quoted it Confused

trumpisagit · 05/10/2021 19:48

At my children's school these would be fine, but DS also got away with wearing black astroturf trainers as school shoes in y7. However if it's one of those schools with blazers they will insist on rigid smart shoes.
Given the problems with fit and comfort and foot shape it might be worth raising with the school.

ChristmasPlanning · 05/10/2021 20:02

Would a wide fit show help?
@EarringsandLipstick
I also think it's an academy thing. LA comps are more normal and focused on what matters.
That's interesting to know @TataMamma

No academy system in Ireland, always interesting to read on here about how they work.

I'm loath to comment on another educational system but I do follow via TV programmes, newspaper articles & posts here, the secondary school system in England (in particular) and am frequently shocked by some of the (to me) excessively draconian decisions around discipline, isolation & exclusion. Not that it's perfect but it's more of a partnership between the schools & parents, I know from experience schools can really struggle when they do need to exclude a student but it really means that every effort is taken to find a positive solution rather than punitive measures.

EarringsandLipstick · 05/10/2021 20:16

@Rannva

They're trainers. Stop being one of those hilarious cliched front-of-the-local-news mums who's pretending she doesn't know the difference between a pair of smart office-style school shoes and a pair of trainers. You just look silly.
What a thoroughly horrible post. 😡
TheKeatingFive · 05/10/2021 20:19

the difference between a pair of smart office-style school shoes and a pair of trainers

Has anyone actually been in an office recently? They're full of trainers.

Why are we preparing our children to be bank managers from the 1950s? It's just bloody weird.

EspressoDoubleShot · 05/10/2021 20:24

Well I value my privacy,but seeing we are doing style and beauty
Me and my besties,the lambrini girls. I know I’m not as stylish as Europeans or @Sommernacht89 but I like to think in the right girdle. I still got it goin on

GreenLakes · 05/10/2021 20:25

They are very clearly trainers and therefore not appropriate for school. I don’t understand why parents cannot just support the uniform policy they agreed to when they applied for a school.

It’s not even like you could mistake them for shoes. They have a massive Nike tick logo across them. Your DS would’ve been in detention for 2 weeks at the DCs’ schools.

SuperstarDog · 05/10/2021 20:25

🤣 So true.
