To ask if these are acceptable to wear as school shoes?

My son has just been put into detention for the second day in a row for wearing the wrong shoes. He has been threatened with a fixed term exclusion too. Their uniform policy says if their shoes have laces they must be black and that they can’t be canvas. These look smart, they have black laces and they are leather. My DS has issues with his feet because of their shape and normal school shoes hurt him. We’ve tried so many different brands.

YANBU- these are acceptable as school shoes.

YABU- the school is right.

They are trainers and wouldn’t be acceptable in our school.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 05/10/2021 15:01

I think they should be suitable as school shoes, personally, but it's up to the school to set their own rules about whether black trainers are allowed.

RestingPandaFace · 05/10/2021 15:01

They aren’t shoes, they are trainers.

romdowa · 05/10/2021 15:02

They look fine but some schools have crazy rules around shoes. If they are needed for medical reasons , can you get a letter stating that?

girlmom21 · 05/10/2021 15:02

Yeah they're trainers - not shoes.

Awomanwalksintoabar · 05/10/2021 15:02

Fucking ridiculous

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 05/10/2021 15:02

There would be no issues whatsoever with these at either of my dc’s secondary schools. They’re similar to ds’ school shoes if not exactly the same.

Get him a medical letter about his feet?

MrsFin · 05/10/2021 15:02

Well, it's not up to us to decide whether they are acceptable, is it? It's what's acceptable to the school that's important.

You say the schools uniform policy states that if their shoes have laces they must be black and that they can’t be canvas

If these have laces, are black and are not canvas - what is it that the school are objecting to? And why?

3scape · 05/10/2021 15:02

They look like trainers. They would pass at my child's primary but not the secondary the older ones go to.

Really, we on the internet don't get to decide. It is entirely up to the whims of the taste of the person setting the uniform code. No matter what most people would ignore

BananaPB · 05/10/2021 15:02

They are not allowed in our secondary. They expect a shoe that can be polished so (p)leather sort of thing

WeepySheepy · 05/10/2021 15:03

They are clearly trainers and have a big swoosh logo on them. They don't look smart. No one would wear them to an interview for an office job.

SummersOverSeasideTown · 05/10/2021 15:03

They are Nike branded trainers. These are not suitable for many schools, and every school that doesn't allow them makes it clear in the policy, they usually specifically show a picture of Nike black trainers as not being acceptable.

I personally think they should be but that is a very different argument

MrsFin · 05/10/2021 15:03

I've just noticed the Nike logo on the side - they are trainers, not shoes.

goawayalcg · 05/10/2021 15:03

Wouldn't be allowed at our secondary. Not that I agree , but ...

LubaLuca · 05/10/2021 15:04

They'd be acceptable for us - all black, and polishable black leather. Those are the rules at our school though, it depends on what you have to adhere to.

WeepySheepy · 05/10/2021 15:04

Is there a reason you can't buy him shoes? Does he have a foot injury etc? If so then I'd expect them to be flexible.

Comefromaway · 05/10/2021 15:05

They look like trainers I'm afraid.

I totally understand your reasoning as I have two children with awkwardly shaped feet and hypermobility.

Jigsawprison · 05/10/2021 15:05

They wouldn't be acceptable at our school. However if he has a genuine reason for not wearing correct uniform you can talk to the school and get a care plan in place with an acceptable type of shoe.
Dc1 has a care plan with adapted uniform mentioned we did need a letter from the specialist to support this.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 05/10/2021 15:07

They look too much like trainers, sorry.

ProfSprout · 05/10/2021 15:07

They’re clearly trainers but it really doesn’t matter what we think, it’s up to the school.

Personally I think secondary schools spend way too long thinking about shoes (I’m a primary teacher myself and regularly wear trainers to work!) but that’s the way it is.

WeepySheepy · 05/10/2021 15:07

@WeepySheepy

Is there a reason you can't buy him shoes? Does he have a foot injury etc? If so then I'd expect them to be flexible.
Ah I see you said its his foot shape causing issues. In which case get a letter supporting this from the doctor.
AlpineSnow · 05/10/2021 15:07

It doesn't really matter what we think. It's what the school think that matters.

Wolfiefan · 05/10/2021 15:09

Why do the school object to them? They must have a reason.
We ended up with the uniform rules open on my phone whilst shoe shopping for a new Y7. It wasn’t straight forward!

RoomOfRequirement · 05/10/2021 15:09

They're not shoes, they're trainers. So if the school has a 'no trainers' policy these wouldn't be allowed.

ChocolateRiver · 05/10/2021 15:10

At my school these would be classed as trainers so wouldn’t be acceptable, sorry.
