He worked in the same dept as WC.

It’s being very widely reported, except by the BBC.

AIBU to be sickened and wonder WHY the BBC are not reporting this?

Is it bashing? Or is not holding to account?

@mustlovegin

So if we can make reforms because of one man in the medical community, why not do the same for the police?

If reforms are required, they need to be made. But police bashing needs to stop

Why?

People are justifiably fucking angry. I'm angry. Wayne Couzens was able to kill Sarah Everard because of the culture in the police that being a predator is just 'bantz'. Too fucking right I am 'bashing' that.

If police don't want to be bashed, perhaps be better at whistleblowing misogynistic colleagues. And don't even pretend to patronise us by claiming that in some forces it isn't like that. Every force has this culture, that is crystal clear.

This whingey 'poor us' attitude about the police, making out they're the victims because people are being means online, is nothing short of offensive. If only they poured that energy into tackling misogyny within their ranks

YourFinestPantaloons · 04/10/2021 10:16

@mathanxiety

The person who took out his animosity on the child was taking revenge on a specific officer for a specific interaction.

This has the potential to get way out of hand.
This is a way of telling women that it's more important to protect the police force than to address inadequate policing that leaves women very much unprotected.

The force exists to serve and protect the public. It's not the other way round.

SachaStark2 · 04/10/2021 10:17

That’s lovely for you, Gin. So when do we address the systemic and institutional stuff associated with a misogyny and rape culture, then? How many more women and people of minority groups need to die first? Would you like 10 more to die, or 100? That will only be about six months’ worth.

I honestly don’t see why some people only see this as mutually exclusive cases.

Of course, carry on processing individual cases in court, as is just. But for god’s sake, do SOMETHING to address rape culture, racist culture, everything that is damaging and corrupt within the police and society as a whole. How do you think 79 more women have ended up being murdered since Sarah Everard’s death?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/10/2021 10:20

Hello everyone. As this is an active case, please bear in mind that any speculation/information that could prejudice proceedings, will be deleted. Please see this statement from the Crown Prosecution Service for more information.

MarshmallowSwede · 04/10/2021 10:20

I would find it amusing if the police questioned me about my speculations about a man who has been CHARGED with rape!

I would call the media so fast.. I don’t think the police want anyone to think that they are trying to suppress women from voicing our concerns.

I can see the headlines: “Pregnant foreigner arrested by the Met for voicing her fears about sexual offenders and rapists being on the Met. Police being accused of using their power to suppress women from voicing their concerns about their safety”.

Don’t forget how the women at the Sarah Everhard vigil were manhandled.

My MIL is a well respected lawyer so trust that if anyone dared to try me with this not only would I make sure it was all over the media here, but also make sure it’s all over the news internationally not only in Sweden.

“British police accused of using their power to suppress women fro voicing their fears online of sexual predators in the police force. Women are being arrested if they dare mention the latest police officer charged with rape”

Yes.. I’m sure it will go over lovely.
@pelosi ex dropped my son at school, bumped into another parent who he had dealings with at work. Said parent cornered myself and son at pick up, made the “piggy fuck” comment to my son and spat at him. It was then spread round the school (in a bit of a dodgy area) that his dad and step mum were police officers and that we should be avoided. My son went from having lots of friends and being happy at school to being subject to comments such as the piggy one above on a regular basis and having zero friends
Your problem isn't what is happening currently, it's that some dickhead who your ex arrested is unsurprisingly still a dickhead.

He essentially assaulted your son. Report it, but don't for a second think that this has any bearing on the current situation.

I was stalked by a Met officer. I was very frightened.
I was quite young at the time.
He was doing a bit of off duty gardening work ( not strictly allowed).
I was married but this didn't put him off, as he was too.
I had to deal with him as part of my job.
He kept disparaging my now ex husband, and making embarrassing comments about how attractive I was, and how I put on perfume just for him. This was every time I saw him.I stopped making the team tea ,to avoid him.
I generally wear perfume, but made a point of not putting it on when he was booked, but this didn't help of course. As I said, I was only young.
I found him completely scary, he was huge, quite good looking but not at all my type. Just scary .Much older than me, predatory and upsetting.
On one occasion he chased me down some steps trying to grab my waist. I asked my ex husband to speak to him, but he was useless.
In the end I asked my employers to end the casual contract with him, explaining how upset I was.
A week later, there was vandalism to the property. I did assume it was a reprisal.
A month or two later, my neighbour found evidence that someone had been standing on the corner of our adjoining and accessible gardens. You could see my bedroom and bathroom windows from there.
It was a secluded place, strangely I had felt someone had been watching me and had started drawing the curtains.
Anyways, this and other experiences have led me to be wary of the Police. They seem to think they can say and do as they like.

If we didn't have a police force the number of women murdered would have been 2, 3, 100 times that. Can't you see this?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 04/10/2021 10:30

@MarshmallowSwede - charged is not convicted. We really understand the anger over this case and it is absolutely justified - but everyone is entitled to a fair trial and we cannot allow speculation.

mustlovegin · 04/10/2021 10:31

One account, one officer then. What are we supposed to take away from it?

MarshmallowSwede · 04/10/2021 10:32

No one is saying we don’t need police. People are saying that reforms are needed. Officers need to be vetted better to make sure they are not sexual offenders or those who are more likely to attack POC and use excessive force.

If you can’t see why women would have some concerns then that’s on you.

Tootingcarmen · 04/10/2021 10:32

@mustlovegin

If reforms are required, they need to be made. But police bashing needs to stop

If no one complains about the current system then how will it get changed?

Technically true but just cause the organisation saves more than it attacks doesn’t mean we should let police officers attack women! It’s not a numbers game these are real people
HarrietsChariot · 04/10/2021 10:34

@MarshmallowSwede you can be as amused as you like at the threat of being imprisoned for contempt of court, but would you be as amused when the case collapsed because of people like you speculating on it meant that the defendent couldn't have a fair trial?

In this country at least, you're innocent until proven guilty. Just because someone is charged or tried doesn't mean they are automatically guilty. You can have your own opinions, but the jury will likely have access to more information than you do.

I mean I am all for changing the justice system (the current system isn't perfect but then neither was the lynch mob) but until the system changes, it's best to abide by the present rules.

Exactly this! Again, I’m married to a dedicated hard working police officer, but enough is enough there is systemic misogyny and racism within pockets of police forces throughout the U.K., admittedly at varying degrees but just because some are good hardworking officers doesn’t mean the service doesn’t need an overhaul and held to account for its failures to protect vulnerable and marginalised groups. Something isn’t working, fix it, this “not all cops” is just “not all men” in another guise, no ones saying it’s all of them but police officers feelings aren’t the most important thing here, public safety and confidence is

Can’t you see how dangerous this view is? That we have to accept a regular Purge style raping or killing of women by the police in order to have a police force?
Tootingcarmen · 04/10/2021 10:41

@BellaElla99

No one has taken it seriously when black people have been saying it for years, when black people have voiced fear for their safety. There are always excuses. ‘But the police are good at their job.’ ‘But it’s only a small minority’ ‘Our police aren’t like police in America’. Now, everyone is scared of the police and want to take it seriously? And they say racism doesn’t exist in the UK. What a joke.
Agreed Bella, it’s a bit devastating :(
vivainsomnia · 04/10/2021 10:42

So the apologists on this thread - are you police officers or is it your husbands?
Neither. Don't know one police officer in my personal life.

Doesn't change my view on giving a sentence to someone and the group they belong too before sentencing.

Thank God for MN to remind us all of it. You can shout as much as you want, try to divert the issue and turn the accusation around, it doesn't justify the sense of entitlement to accuse and label those not yet convicted.

^Spot on, it’s exactly the same as ‘not all men’.

Women are living in fear but do please tell us about men's hurt feelings.

Are you for real?

Someone posts a personal account of being stalked and harassed and your response is ‘so?’

How fucking disrespectful
