@OrganTransplant123

Did you read the article? He is disagreeing that lemons are MC. That said, growing up we never had lemons apart from a jif lemon for pancake day.
Same

The article is at heart the Labour Party having an argument amongst themselves.
🤷

@violetbunny I neither know nor care however I do want to know where you live (..roughly for weather assessment purposes😄) is it in a pot etc.!

AGreenerShadeofKale · 03/10/2021 11:26

Yes @Pythonesque same in Spain.

I like using local produce as it also tastes fresher / better a lot of the time.

My granny raised four boys mother and MIL three children each lemons were used in baking all the time. Maybe the MC accusations emerged as ready meals become available. My OH went to Italy on business the Sicilian lemons he brought back perfumed the kitchen and could be eaten like oranges

@Diva66

Load of bollox. I’m working class and I eat lemon, polenta and a lot of other stuff.
My OH used to say that once things like polenta, quinoa, hummous etc were sold in Morrisons they lost their MC credentials!

There's definitely some confusion between people seeing some things as MC because they're expensive and other people seeing things as MC because they are regarded (rightly or wrongly) as being outside the culturally not the norm among working class people even though they're cheap. Like lentils. Obviously it's all ridiculous stereotyping, but that doesn't mean it isn't frequently borne out by what people actually do!

As for the lemons... they are mainly used for easily avoidable garnish/flavouring or when cooking from scratch. Which I guess is why some people could see them as MC.

Lemons were about 50 p for 4-6 in Lidl today and loose limes were 18 pence each. So not a significant cost to anyone really, apart from those who are really on the breadline. I'm now regretting not buying a load to make Key Lime pie.
