To have carried on running?

OdettySpaghetti · 02/10/2021 08:06

Went for a run this morning. Ran past a couple of women with offlead dogs (cockapoo and a frenchie) which chased me as I passed them. They were not aggressive, more like running alongside me. The owners shouted of them but the dogs ignored them and carried on following me. I kept on running - before long we (me and dogs!) we’re quite a distance from the owners who were miles behind shouting and running (in a fashion) after us. I ran my usual route, off this path and into a wooded cut through, dogs still by my side. I’m getting pissed off at this point as I know I’m coming to a road and will need to stop so the owners can get their dogs. Sure enough I come to the road and stop. The dogs stop too and just start sniffing around but because we’re now close to a road I feel I have to take the dogs back before they dart across it so I head back the way I came, fuming that this has messed my run up. When the owners catch up one says “if you’d just stopped running we could have got them ages ago!” I replied that their dogs are not my responsibility to which they replied “no need to take them close to a main road though is there? Where is your common sense?” So livid now I say “get your fucking dogs under control, next time I don’t stop at the road”.

AIbU to have not wanted to mess my run up?

@bettyboodecia

Idiot owners. YANBU. You have no moral responsibility to stop at the road either.
Errr, you kinda do. Not a legal responsibility but definitely a moral one.

I run 10k in 38 minutes

I could outrun a cockapoo and a frenchie![/quote]
I mean, good for you.

But imo that doesn't stop you from being a nice person and from being able to stop and help a stranger who was clearly needing a little bit of help.

Off topic, but that's a really impressive 10k time Reallymean.

A strange dog chasing me
My priority is me.

Not taking any chances.

One bitten, twice shy.

Flat route, with a sprinkling of downhills!
Reallyimeanreally2022 · 02/10/2021 17:14

It was 46 this morning!

Whammyyammy · 02/10/2021 17:15

Not your responsibility, I wouldn't of stopped and kept going. If they can't control their animals in public, then leads should be used

groundcontroltomontydon · 02/10/2021 17:29

I might have given the owners my best Paddington stare but it wouldn't have occurred to me not to drop to a walk in that situation Confused

wtfisgoingon2021 · 02/10/2021 17:34

Absolutely hate when people let their dogs off the lead when they have no recall.

Yes I was thinking that too! Smile Definitely faster than a Cockapoo... I might be faster than a middle aged Labrador (on a good day)...
TractorAndHeadphones · 02/10/2021 17:43

83% YANBU contrary to the comments …

sunglassesonthetable · 02/10/2021 18:43

The dog owners sound naive and entitled.

You were well within your 'rights' to carry on running and not stop despite the dogs clearly following you and the owners also taking chase.

But even with that mindset you stopped at the road. Despite the dogs not being your responsibility you couldn't cross that moral line of responsibility.

Tbh I think you should have just run the dogs back to their owners after the first 100m or so. You could have done that without stopping but I kind of think you ended up cutting your nose to spite your face in the end and having to make a much bigger, disruptive detour.

You were rude to the dog owners but there we are. They sound hopeless. But I don't know if any dog IS 100% reliable off lead.

bozzabollix · 02/10/2021 18:49

Dear me, would it have hurt to have helped these people? I’m a runner and I’d have stopped for sure when it was obvious the dogs were in for a duration. But then I’m kind.

Thehop · 02/10/2021 18:51

I’ve got one dog with bomb proof recall. One mannerless asbo. They should know their dogs and have them on leads.

Bombaloorina · 02/10/2021 18:57

Has the OP come back to this very long thread, or is everyone arguing amongst themselves.

ChasedByFox · 02/10/2021 19:03

Be thankful it was dogs you were chased by ...

But YANBU in any way- the owners are at fault for letting dogs off leashes if they can't be controlled safely.

Leibham · 02/10/2021 19:22

@WaltzingBetty

Of course it cuts BOTH ways that’s my argument in response to the point you made ALREADY having been made. But when the shoe is on the foot of the dog owner it’s inexcusable.

Hypocrites as well as meanies.

Leibham · 02/10/2021 19:24

This is getting ridiculous now. We’ve all agreed the OP was within her rights to take the dogs on a run a couple of miles away from their owners and safety. No one is arguing that she wasn’t within her rights.

But she is unkind 100%

mbosnz · 02/10/2021 19:28

'Meanies'? Are we six?!

Sometimes I'm kind, sometimes I'm not. Like most people. But people shouldn't rely on random strangers kindness to ensure the welfare of either their animals or their children. Because that random stranger might not have the wherewithal or desire to #bekind, that day, and if their children or their animals suffer as a result, it's still on them that their children or animals were in that position.

Leibham · 02/10/2021 19:33

@mbosnz

Yes I do believe some people are behaving like self righteous six year olds.

Meh. Sadly you’re right, there’s no longer common sense and kindness towards others from some people so while it’s not expected it’s still nice to see from this thread there’s some kind and humane joggers out there.

Buttercup54321 · 02/10/2021 19:36

You sound an aggressive twat. Stormy teacups is right. You should have kept running back towards the owners, let them grab the dogs, then run on. No need to swear at them and act aggressively.

DecadentlyDecisive · 02/10/2021 19:37

I'm getting more & more fed up with all the irresponsible arseholes with dogs who think that everyone else's worlds have to revolve around their badly trained beasts.

I had a dog until recently & got fed up with these idiots and their gormless WankyPoos or whatever bullying him, jumping up at me etc....

When I'm running, it's with an aim - to run a certain distance in a certain time with the aim of improving.

It's why I've spent a lot of money on gadgets to track it all - so there's no way I'm stopping or messing around for a dog that should be on a lead....

mbosnz · 02/10/2021 19:37

I just think that depending on the kindness of strangers is not a very smart way of ensuring the well-being of those you are responsible for. Mostly you'll get lucky - after all the runner was kind enough to stop rather than continuing with her run, but not always. The dog walkers and their dogs got lucky this time. They've been given fair warning that this won't necessarily always be the case. Hopefully, for the sake of the dogs, they take heed.

DecadentlyDecisive · 02/10/2021 19:38

Or just turn, shout at the dogs & carry on running.

If that didn't work, a kick might suffice....

No, OP hasn't returned, although there's nothing like a Dog Tread to bring all the throthers to the yard.
