Zarah Sultana MP has reported that today The Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire Phill Abbott has said that Sarah Everard should have ‘resisted arrest’ and that women need to be more ‘street smart’.

It's funny how this Commissioner appears to be going against the whole narrative re policing up until now - the lack of respect for the police, the implication that it is generally only people who have done something wrong who behave in an obstructive or evasive way, that anyone who suggests otherwise is some sort of left wing do gooder, etc, etc. The underlying message conveyed to people is "comply" - that a law abiding citizen does what is asked of him or her if they are approached by a police officer. I don't remember anyone suggesting that there are times when a person should run away to avoid arrest.

I think for too long the police force has not confronted the racist, sexist and homophobic culture within it, which seems to be far from uncommon. Of course, not all police officers should be labelled in this way but there has been enough evidence, much of it ignored, to suggest that there is a significant problem.

PCCs are elected, they are not sackable in a normal sense. There are current considerations about introducing a power of recall for them, similar or the same as MPs

I think it’s a reasonable assumption that a younger person, a person from an ethnic minority or a woman may hold a very different opinion.

Perhaps the police could put a full page ad in every newspaper explaining what rights we do and dont have when facing arrest by an officer..there would be plenty of police who wouldnt like that at all ..the police are not kern to let us know ..and often plod themselves dont know what they can and cant do ...there are some seriously thick officers out there .
