To think he should resign immediately?

Zarah Sultana MP has reported that today The Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire Phill Abbott has said that Sarah Everard should have ‘resisted arrest’ and that women need to be more ‘street smart’.

Victim blaming her and other women effectively.

He shouldn't be let resign. He should be sacked.

Kittii · 01/10/2021 21:38

Such a casual attitude to male violence. I think many men feel defensive about being tarred with the same brush and so get defensive and victim blame. It's inexcusable though.

adawong · 01/10/2021 21:41

Yes he should resign.
But Zarah Sultana has fuck all to do with it.

stonebrambleboy · 01/10/2021 21:47

He should be sacked. Does he have a wife and daughters, if so I hope they are giving him shit. Disgraceful.

MaeD · 01/10/2021 21:48

His name is Philip Allott (according to the BBC) not Phill Abbott - only saying this as the first name makes it harder to search for a source for those who want to look it up.

An article is here: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-58762029.amp

And yes he should go. Angry

Kendodd · 01/10/2021 21:51

He shouldn't be let resign. He should be sacked.

Who's going to sack him? He's been elected by the voters of Manchester, I don't believe he can be sacked.

Is there a petition doing the rounds calling on him to resign yet?

frumpety · 01/10/2021 21:51

He is looking at the situation from his own perspective, which is someone that know's and understands police protocol, meaning that he would probably pick up on something amiss. The vast majority of the public don't and wouldn't. When talking about a hideous event involving someone in your profession, you don't blame the victim, you try and learn from it ?

MaskingForIt · 01/10/2021 21:54

It’s such dangerous advice- how long until a women is assaulted by a genuine police officer for refusing to come quietly? That will be her fault too.

I’m white, but can you imagine if a black woman tried to resist being arrested? The police already take any excuse to beat up black people. If a black woman got beaten up by a policeman’s for resisting arrest then that bloody police chief would her it was her own fault for not being compliant.

CreationVacation · 01/10/2021 21:54

He wishes he hadn’t said if now apparently, From Twitter,

I would like to wholeheartedly apologise for my comments on BBC radio York earlier today, which I realise have been insensitive and wish to retract them in full.

Not good enough.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 01/10/2021 21:57

No its not good enough

He thought about those words, he probably practiced them and now they’ve backfired on him

Not good enough. He meant those words. That tells us who he is.
frumpety · 01/10/2021 22:09

You just know that a woman has pointed out to him that he has blamed a completely innocent woman for being falsely arrested, raped and murdered, because of her naivety of police protocol. I should not need to be aware of any protocol when it comes to the police, they should be there to protect me, if they are doing it right, I shouldn't feel any suspicion towards them, ever.

It isn't my job to police the police.

Well quite. As a Black woman I’ve always been extremely wary of the police tbh although even I wouldn’t have imagined in a million years that a serving officer could be capable of this evil crime.

I wouldn’t resist arrest or attempt to argue with a police officer who stopped me, even if I suspected it was not in line with ‘police protocol’. The consequences could be disastrous.

The advice doled out to women who are worried if they are stopped by a lone office is mind boggling: flag down a bus, run to a house and knock on the door…or perhaps police forces could vet their officers a bit better and actually take action when inappropriate behaviour is flagged. Apparently the officers who were part of the misogynistic, racist WhatsApp group Couzens was in are all still working.

What I don’t understand is how he thought those words were ok to say. He may think those things, but in the current climate, how could anyone, in a job like his especially, not realise how they would be received. Like you say, he wrote them, he no doubt practised them and he still didn’t realise. That really shows a complete lack of understanding of the issues.

DumplingsAndStew · 01/10/2021 22:14

What kind of fucking incels have said YABU?

likeacandleinthewind · 01/10/2021 22:14

What a twerp, he should absolutely go he is in breach of his own organisaiton's code of ethics here.

MrsLeclerc · 01/10/2021 22:14

I was disgusted by his comments.

There we go, it’s another item we get to add to our ‘Women’s safety preparedness list’:
Don’t dress in a provocative manner,
Don’t leave your drink unattended,
Don’t separate from the group,
Don’t walk alone after dark,
Always sit behind the taxi driver.

And now, I need to ‘learn about the legal process’, ‘be more streetwise’ and ‘not submit to arrest’. But only if the arresting officer is a bad guy obviously, if he’s a good one I shouldn’t resist arrest. Glad we cleared that up Confused.

FFS the onus has always been on women to change our behaviour. It’s thoroughly depressing that he even had those thoughts let alone felt enough belief in them to spout them on the radio.

Her poor family, can’t imagine the upset that this must have caused.

AppleKatie · 01/10/2021 22:15

They weren’t insensitive words though.

They were demonstrably wrong and dangerous. They revealed how he thinks and therefore he has shown himself unfit for public office.

So no an apology on Twitter isn’t good enough.

Not sure if you need to be a local to use this but I found this useful:-

What kind of fucking incels have said YABU?
If anyone has posted by yabu accident you can change it, you just need to press the other button

If you honestly think the OP is being unreasonable it might be nice if you could wooman up, grow some ovaries and say why

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 01/10/2021 22:22

Always sit behind the taxi driver.

Why this one?

Is it so they can’t grab you easily?

00100001 · 01/10/2021 22:27

To think he should resign immediately?
MrsLeclerc · 01/10/2021 22:40

@RufustheBadgeringReindeer Yes, if you sit in the front or rear passenger side you can be grabbed more easily. If you’re behind the driver they have a hard time getting a grip on you and you have easy access to their neck/head to retaliate.

Leibham · 01/10/2021 22:42

@MaeD thanks for the name correction Flowers

@adawong what exactly do you mean that it’s nothing to do with Zarah Sultana? She’s an MP and she’s a female so yes, it does have to do with her as much as any other woman.
