Yesterday bloke in checkout queue behind me had 8 sliced loaves and a tray of dog food tins.
And 3 bottles of orange squash

The sandwiches at his kid's party are going to be dreadful

I was one of these a few weeks ago.

I had just found out I was pregnant and was obsessively testing.

On my way out of the door, DD shouted down to me that she was running low on Sanitary towels.
I usually buy them bulk.
So off I go, get to boots.
3 pregnancy tests and 5 packs of sanitary towels.
I'm sure the woman who served me was thinking, WTAF? But of an odd mix of things to buy.

NotMyCat · 02/10/2021 11:36
@Bullsh see my reply up thread to someone else who suggested that - I can't carry the crates as I'm waiting for back surgery. I can only carry very light things.
I hope your surgery goes well Smile I had spinal surgery in 2017 (discectomy and laminectomy)

TheOnlyMrsM · 02/10/2021 11:48

Yes, many people, such as the unwell, elderly, disabled and heavily pregnant women, who rely on supermarket deliveries, aren't able to lug great crates of shopping into their homes. Until very recently supermarkets were asking customers not to touch crates, let alone take them into their homes, to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Even now, many customers and delivery drivers prefer to decant shopping outside for the same reason. Some people are still being careful - wearing masks, using hand gel, social distancing, cleaning and quarantining shopping, and shielding.

SunshineCake1 · 02/10/2021 13:24

Although the weirdest one was three bottles of hair conditioner, tin foil, and a pack of 12 condoms. I kinda don’t even want to know.

The items probably aren't going to be used at the same time..

Oh and having to buy a pregnancy test too... you can see the sales assistant is having an internal battle to keep a straight face and not raise eyebrows.

I used to work on a supermarket checkout when I was much younger and it's so hard to not react!

Once when buying a pregnancy test (new relationship and in a bit of a panic) the checkout lady actually said to me "ooh exciting! I hope you get the result you want!!"

I mean why? Why would anyone say that to someone they don't know??

I worked in Boots in 1998-99 and said to the lady, looked late 20's-early 30's that I hoped she got the result she wanted. It has haunted me ever since. My only defence was my age but I wasn't even that young at 26/7. Sorry if it was you.
cricketmum84 · 02/10/2021 13:44

Haha @SunshineCake1 don't worry that definitely wasn't me! I was 14 in 1998 😂

TammyTwoSwanson · 02/10/2021 13:58

It's honestly never occured to me to ever look in someone's trolley, but after reading this thread, I've no idea why! I'm fascinated now!

That's good. At least I didn't say how exciting!

I hate when checkout staff take it upon themselves to comment on your purchases (another benefit to self service) - I know they are told to make conversation but no, I don't actually care if those are nice or good value or whatever.
LukeEvansWife · 02/10/2021 14:17

And all of you who laugh about others' purchases - do you use all your shopping at the same time? Presumably not!

It's not serious. I'm sure people think WTF at my shopping all the time.

I think WTF at my shopping most of the time!

Westerman · 02/10/2021 14:34

I like to make up Xmas or gift 'hampers' and if I find something on offer then I'll get quite a few of one thing. It's mostly home and beauty products but occasionally foodie bits.

My husband also likes to buy in bulk with staples so I imagine our trollies look a bit unusual at times. TBH, though, I rarely notice what's in other people's baskets and trollies.

zingally · 02/10/2021 14:44

I love having a nosy at the checkout to see what other people are buying!

Last week I bought 6 boxes of the same type of tampon... They were my favourite size/brand, and I haven't seen them in supermarkets in months and months. I thought they'd maybe stopped making them. Should last me a year at least. :D

LukeEvansWife · 02/10/2021 14:47

The single cucumber comments - I eat a cucumber in one go so will often buy one

JumpLeadsForTwo · 02/10/2021 14:56

@cricketmum84

😂😂 dog food sandwiches!!

We don't buy any fruit or veg from the supermarket as I have a weekly delivery from a local company.

I always want to tell people that we do eat healthier than our trolley suggests when I see them looking!!

Me too! I buy fruit and veg, meat eggs and bread from the local market, and am always self conscious that my trolley has no fresh stuff in it!
cardibach · 02/10/2021 15:06

The shop I’m most proud of in terms of making people judge me was a bottle of gin and a load of cat food. Crazy cat lady shop.

TartanJumper · 02/10/2021 15:09

Maybe he'll freeze some of the bread?
Mine was weird once- needed a new kitchen knife for a pineapple I'd brought (and then discovered I had no knife) and sanitary towels. Nothing else!

Dreamstate · 02/10/2021 15:38

I was once overweight and buying some profiteroles and got told off that I should make better choices, i was getting them to take as as my contribution to a dinner party

It really pissed me off, people should mind their own business. Who cares why people are buying stuff

How dare people think they have the right to pass comment. I suppose they can think whatever they like, but they don't have to say it directly to the person their horrible thoughts are aimed at!
Dreamstate · 02/10/2021 15:55

Well I did turn round and tell that person that I was overweight because id been comfort eating from being bullied at work and that was stopping me from killing myself but you know you never know what is going on with another person.....but at least I can chnage my weight, not much you can do with a shit personality

Thomasina79 · 02/10/2021 16:01

I used to volunteer with a charity and one of the volunteers was in charge of buying just biscuits and loo rolls. He used to get some funny looks when regularly buying them in bulk!

Dryadia · 02/10/2021 16:21

We do a monthly online Tesco shop normally for 2 items only, part baked Slooow wholemeal rolls ( enough for the month) and organic steak ( between 2-4 ) We get some weird looks from the drivers.

We are now adding some of the new pumpkin seed rolls from Slooow, tried them this week and they are amazing. Smaller than the honey wholemeal though, which are like mini loaves.

I am so sorry Flowers It just goes to show that being nosey isn't just a 'fun little quirk'.

People think they have the right to comment - says more about the type of people they are

tomorrowalready · 02/10/2021 17:38
@tomorrowalready you can make alcohol with sugar and yeast and nutrients for the yeast to eat. That's the tomato purée!
Thanks for that , Malin25, only just seen your reply. I did look it up as I was curious, don't understand the technical details but happy brewing to you!

I am so glad I am old enough not to care what others think now otherwise I would be paranoid about all the observant check out workers here watching what I might be buying. My trolley often looks like i have numerous kids at home when there are none.

tomorrowalready · 02/10/2021 17:39

Sorry, Malin52 not 25.
