Yesterday bloke in checkout queue behind me had 8 sliced loaves and a tray of dog food tins.
And 3 bottles of orange squash

The sandwiches at his kid's party are going to be dreadful

It works even better in Aldi or Lidl as you have the random objects from the central aisle. So you might see a trolley full of charcuterie and cheeses nestled alongside a rat trap or hedge trimmers.

alrightfella · 01/10/2021 15:24

@cricketmum84 I'm the same I think people must be horrified if they look in my trolley as I get all fruit and veg from the farm shop and meat from the butchers and most of my cleaning stuff from home bargains. So my trolley always looks like it's full of random crap.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/10/2021 15:24

@x2boys

I was at Home Bargains last week, and the lady in front of me unloaded lots of small bottles of (of about 100mls) of olive oil, they were also selling large bottles of olive oil.
To put on tables in a restaurant?

14 yogurts in one week

You don't need to eat them all in the same week.

My shopping trolley probably looks odd to anyone who does a regular weekly shop for the items they plan to use in the next week, because I shop to keep a store cupboard mainly, so just buy what's on offer and a few bits of fresh stuff for the next few days.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/10/2021 15:28

I also rotate round different shops and buy what I like or is cheap in any particular shop.

So if I go in Lidl, which is my least convenient supermarket, I might buy 4 of the big jars of gherkins because they're about 70 p each and I might not get back there for a while.

Likewise I only really drink Waitrose tonic in cans, so I'll buy a few packs if I'm there.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 01/10/2021 15:29

Well I need to run out and grab wrapping paper and a cucumber in a bit so god knows what people will think about me Grin

WhatHaveIFound · 01/10/2021 15:33

I buy 14 of the same yoghurt (which dont come in multipacks)

Are they Longley Farm?

I buy them almost every week and really wish they'd do multipacks. It's a pain to scan 14 yoghurts when you're on a self service till!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/10/2021 15:34

I'm a Scout Leader.
I'm very used to the odd looks at the contents of the trolley. Like 16 broom handles. Or 30 Easter eggs.

God I love longley farm yoghurts! I could live off the hazelnut ones.

It maybe a mixed birthday party, for his 4 children, and his three dogs, Did you check how much he spent as well.

the80sweregreat · 01/10/2021 15:40

@Grenlei

I had a temp job working in Tescos for a few weeks one Christmas.

The trolley contents were one of the best bits of the job.

One day a man came in and bought some reduced potatoes. Except that's all he bought. And they were the big 10kg sacks. He had an entire trolley full (maybe 8-10 sacks). I'm all for a bargain but what on earth was he going to do with that many potatoes?!

I was stood behind a couple in Aldi the other day whose shopping basket contained:

6 x chickens
6 x lettuces
A big block of cheddar.

I was fascinated Grin

Maybe he was in charge of a chip shop ?.. it's always strange when people buy lots of one thing!
SummersOverSeasideTown · 01/10/2021 15:41

@Soubriquet

I’m a picker for a supermarket and I’m always amazed by some bulk picks people have. I managed to fill an entire tote with tins of fruit. I’m talking 20+ tins of various fruit. Was brilliant for my IPH but still Grin
What's IPH? Do they hate or love me when I order 40 boxes of cereal?
MotherOfFrenchies · 01/10/2021 15:48

IPH is items picked per hour Grin multiple items give a nice boost to the pick rate. I’m a picker too, my colleague and I had a laugh this morning in the freezer section, we were both picking multiple pizzas for the same customer - we’re taking like 8 margaritas, 10 pepperonis, 12 vegetarians.. we stripped the freezers bare of pizzas within about 30 seconds, fuck knows what other customers got subbed for their desired pizzas Confused Grin

worrieddaughterrr · 01/10/2021 15:51

I just ordered £20 worth of Halloween sweets from Ocado, ready to make up some treat bags. we weren't due to make another order and don't need any non perishables at the moment. DH has a cold and asked me to get whiskey and lemons for hot toddies. So I will have a giant bag of fun size chocolate bars, some Swizzels stuff, chocolate eyeballs, spooky lollipops, lemons and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Costumeidea · 01/10/2021 15:53

An old woman in Home Bargains was in front of me today and bought about 25 packets of custard cremes. I am guessing she has a lot of grandchildren!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 01/10/2021 15:58

One Christmas Eve, I popped into Tesco at 6am to get a couple of bits that I had forgotten and the bloke in front of me had a large box of condoms and a 6-pack of beer! I thought his Christmas will be interesting....

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 01/10/2021 16:02

Mmmm, Longley Farm yoghurts Smile The only way I can get orange (mandarin) yoghurts these days. And all the other yoghurts are too fancy / complex / low-fat. DH loves Longley Farm full-fat cottage cheese too.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 01/10/2021 16:03

What a fun thread this is! I love the odd trolleys loads.

waybill · 01/10/2021 16:07

@MaverickDanger

I can remember coming back from work late one night & popping into Aldi next to my house to get some snacks. In front of me were 5 blokes in their 20s who were buying a crate of beer, some tequila, strawberries, whipped cream and a cucumber.

One of them turned to me and said …it isn’t what it looks like.

Grin Grin

My most recent shopping basket contained some hormone rooting powder, four chicken kievs and a doorstop.

CurryLover55 · 01/10/2021 16:10

I work in retail & love seeing what people buy. One guy bought a packet of Senokot & a plastic drain cleaner! He was in for an uncomfortable afternoon!

JingsMahBucket · 01/10/2021 16:11

Dare I ask what hormone rooting powder is?

Youdoyoutoday · 01/10/2021 16:12

I raised an eyebrow when the lady in front of me scanned a cucumber and a bottle of wine on evening!

ginslinger · 01/10/2021 16:13

we used to do shopping lists on mumsnet - it was so exciting when someone found a list in a trolley and posted it.
Maybe I need to redefine exciting.

SHHTF · 01/10/2021 16:14

It has never occurred to me to look into someone's trolley. Am I the weird one?

Well worth the hassle of scanning though, particularly the pineapple ones 🍍🍍

Pipsquiggle · 01/10/2021 16:17

Love grocery shopping / customer queries - it's my job.

Generally people are really habitual - just buy the same things week in week out.

For most FMCG branded companies, their main focus for their marketing departments is to get you to pick up a new item and get it in your shopping trolley or basket and make it a habit - this usually takes about 4 shops.

That's when, if you pick something up and purchase it for the first time, sophisticated companies might send you a voucher for your second & third purchase.
