How many kidneys do you have?

It's two, right?

DH has one, following a brush with cancer as a very small child.

I have two I think

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 01/10/2021 05:29

Two is standard. Some people are only born with one, or have one functional one and one defective one. Some people have 3 (unusual).

You only have 1 liver, 1 spleen, 1 pancreas, 1 bladder, 1 heart as standard.
2 kidneys, 2 gonads (whichever flavour), 2 of each limb, 2 lungs as standard.

readingismycardio · 01/10/2021 05:46

Two, but my DGm has three. One is not functional

Ethelswith · 01/10/2021 06:07

Two, confirmed by scan

dentydown · 01/10/2021 06:16

My mother had 3. The third one didn’t work, swelled up to a football and stunk the operation table out

olympicsrock · 01/10/2021 06:18

Duplex kidney isn’t actually 2 kidneys on one side, it just means that there are two collecting systems/ two ureters from one kidney.

Footprintsonthemoon1 · 01/10/2021 06:20

I've got 2, due to transplants my dad has 4, due to one of my dad's transplants my grandad has 1

Nietzschethehiker · 01/10/2021 06:27

I really hope you are not about to perform surgery and double checking hereGrin

I assume I have 2 on the grounds noone has told me any different.

My DM has two inside and about 6 in the freezer because DF quite likes them in a steak pie.

HarlanPepper · 01/10/2021 06:36

If you ever get the chance and you're interested, you should learn about how kidneys work. They are fascinating. I mean, I knew they filtered out waste and extra fluid, but the way they do it is amazing.

MrsRetreiver · 01/10/2021 06:36

Assuming I have 2, but my DB only has half a kidney, and I also know someone who has three…

KissKissButtCheek · 01/10/2021 06:38

I have 2....
DD has 2 but only 1 works well, the 2nd is very scarred and a lot smaller than the other. She has regular scans....
My mother has 1

I had surgery in a dodgy hospital in Eastern Europe. It was supposed to be keyhole surgery but the incision runs from my belly button to my pubic bone. I'm convinced they nicked a kidney.

HipHopanonymous · 01/10/2021 07:01

I've got 2 kidneys, three nipples and 4 livers that I purloined from altruistic donors.

Geamhradh · 01/10/2021 07:09

@TheLovelinessOfDemons

I'm assuming 2, as no one's ever found more or fewer than that (or they haven't told me).
You'd be surprised. Mumsnet certainly were over the last few days.

Is that how you came by your wheelchair too?
Dunkling · 01/10/2021 07:29

One and a half. Kidney cancer 2 years ago.

ChaToilLeam · 01/10/2021 07:34

A friend of mine had 4. His own ones, which never worked properly and were shrivelled, a donor kidney which failed after 20 years, and a further subsequent transplant from his dad. Sadly no longer with us, his wife was prepared to donate but he became too ill for the operation.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 01/10/2021 07:36

19, as do all my people.

DysmalRadius · 01/10/2021 07:36

Interesting question. I suspect probably more than two. As well as people born with three, most people who have had a transplant have three because they don’t usually remove the native ones. Happy to be proved wrong though.

I guess it depends on the number of live donors too, as in those cases the extra one in the recipient is balanced out by the donor being down one!!

knittingaddict · 01/10/2021 07:39

I love the juxtaposition of the user name and the question. Confused medical student? I need to know more.

I would hope not. Number of kidneys is basic gcse biology, to get as far as medical school this would be the easy stuff. I’d be bloody worried about a med student who’s anatomy knowledge is that shit.

Most lay people know we have 2 kidneys, it’s hardly specialist knowledge Grin.

Mummylin · 01/10/2021 07:44

I've only got two left now, I gave the rest away.

I wasn't being serious, apart from the bit about needing to know more. I suspect the op wasn't being serious either.Wink
dottiedodah · 01/10/2021 07:50

Usually 2 .however my ds was born with a blocked kidney and had a lot of scans and operations as a baby and young child .this would have caused problems for him later on and may have shrivelled leaving him with only one kidney left.i met people in the scan section of hospital with 3 small kidneys as well.

Spiindoctor · 01/10/2021 08:00

When My Ds was born the nurse did not note down the number of blood vessels in the umbilical cord, this was 30 years ago btw, so I assume that midwives routinely check the cord as the two vessels mean two kidneys.
