How far is the school run and do you drive or walk?

Just curious after looking at another conversation about walking to school in the rain!

My DC primary is just over a mile and we walk but don’t have much choice over the matter as I don’t drive. If it’s very bad rain then I’ll try and arrange a lift or taxi.

Most parents walk or drive as it’s a small town with limited public transport. I’ve never seen anyone cycle in with their children thinking about it.

What does everyone else do?
@MrsColon Not everywhere has this but where we are there is a breakfast club that opens at 8am. That way we can walk and still get to work in time for a 9am start. Neither of us would manage to get to work for a 9am start without it (even with a car). It amazes me that others manage it.
I drop off in the car at 8.35am and then drive straight to work. 6 miles to work, make it by the skin of my teeth.
My company is fairly flexible though so it doesn’t matter if I’m not there bang on 9am. Can’t remember the last time I had a lunch break and often work from home in the evenings so they can’t really complain about the odd 5 mins in the morning.

@TokyoSushi

0.3 miles, we walk unless torrential.
You drive 0.3 miles? Less than 500m?

Takes us 12-15 mins we walk everyday whatever the weather. By the time i load the car up and drive all the way round (we use footpaths and snickets) and join traffic through the village and the struggle to park its no quicker. It also wakes the kids up ready to learn and it gets me moving and awake for my work too when i get back home.

1.5 miles. Walk or cycle if it's me. Drive if it's DP!

user8092437188290 · 27/09/2021 21:24

Walk, cycle or drive depending on the weather.

YesPleaseMary · 27/09/2021 21:37

It’s about 400 metres away so we walk. If it’s raining we walk faster.

Doublechins · 27/09/2021 22:15

We live next door so we walk

BeyondTeddington · 27/09/2021 22:18

We currently live less than 5 mins walk away but we are about to move 30 mins walk away. So we are planning to walk/scoot mostly but luckily there is a bus route that takes us pretty much door to door and as we are in a London borough they are pretty regular. Not looking forward to getting up 30 mins earlier though especially in winter. But hopefully the new house will be worth it :)

gogohm · 27/09/2021 22:20

First primary 3/4 mile, walked - pushchair at first for pick up. Second primary (we moved) 200m so walked, then we moved a mile from school so dropped off on the way to work in car but picked up on foot as I was pt. public bus to secondary (dd1) bike to secondary (dd2) 2 miles

rednetflix · 27/09/2021 22:22

30 minute drive. Hoping my fuel doesn't run out too soon!

AwFeebs · 27/09/2021 22:23

5.5 miles, we drive.

Georgewontsleepnow · 27/09/2021 22:24

A 10-15 minute walk/scoot. We choose the house partly for the location to school and walking lifestyle!

It’s about a 10 min walk and we walk it every day.
They give out badges for ‘active travel’ which I secretly think are mine, I’m sure (and thankful) the rain is always worse when I’m doing the solo part of the walk after drop off or before pick up, it’s my getting hailed on badge!

lnsufficientFuns · 27/09/2021 22:40

9 miles 😂

I spend my life driving and am currently really anxious about petrol

You guys are just so lucky to be close to your schools, my kids would love to live near their friends

Hopesakiller · 27/09/2021 22:55

On my days off I'm still in my PJ's when I put them on the school bus which stops on our doorstep (only a mile from school but no safe walking route)

DixonD · 27/09/2021 23:22

5 miles. It’s rural, no direct bus. I drive.

namechanging202020 · 28/09/2021 10:25

Here in Scotland if it's more than a mile away there's a free school bus!

I think primary is less than that and they provide a school bus.

We're 5mins away so we walk.

VainAbigail · 28/09/2021 10:47

About 20 mins to school 1, 40 mins between school 1 and school 2 and around 30 mins between school 2 and school 3.

I drive. And it still takes around 45/60 mins.

Chillyjellytotty · 28/09/2021 11:03

1.3 miles we walk, unless I am going to Tesco before/after the school run (it means I walk over 5 miles a day). Although when I am off maternity leave will be in the car a few days a week on the way to work.

Flumo · 28/09/2021 11:06

My 9 year old daughter walks the 1.3 mile to school, and I mostly walk my 7 year old the 0.8 mile to his school.

mindutopia · 28/09/2021 12:02

Ours is about 3 miles away (10 minute drive). We live very rurally. So obviously we drive. We can’t even safely walk to the nearest bus stop for school transport.

beakyboo10 · 28/09/2021 12:45

About 284 metres away according to my phone so a very short walk. However it can still take 10 minutes when I take my toddler with me as there as just too many nice pebbles and sticks to collect on the way.

noworklifebalance · 28/09/2021 13:02

Over 3 miles

 • 20min by car
 • 30min by train (10min train and 20min walk) but timings of the train are such that we will either get to school far too early or just in time if no delays.

Would cycle if it weren’t for many factors (1) big hill (2) too many bags, instruments, kit (3) and both DH & I have people facing roles and no shower facilities at work.

Electric cargo bike. Can carry multiple children and luggage up hills without breaking a sweat Smile
