Just curious after looking at another conversation about walking to school in the rain!

My DC primary is just over a mile and we walk but don’t have much choice over the matter as I don’t drive. If it’s very bad rain then I’ll try and arrange a lift or taxi.

Most parents walk or drive as it’s a small town with limited public transport. I’ve never seen anyone cycle in with their children thinking about it.

What does everyone else do?

Primary school was just under a mile away and I usually drove. Secondary school and college are 1.5m and 4m away and I usually drive them although oldest sometimes gets the bus or an Uber. Youngest does occasionally walk to school.

BendingSpoons · 27/09/2021 14:45

School is a 15min walk. Always walk/scooter, even if it's torrential. The parking is too awful to drive.

HairyToity · 27/09/2021 14:46

3 miles. We drive. I might be tempted to cycle, but part of journey is a busy main road and I'd be nervous with the children.

Buttons294749 · 27/09/2021 14:48

20 min drive / 5-6 miles (SEN school In London)

ItsAChalkengingWank · 27/09/2021 14:49

Dc3 is 20 miles there. I drive

Dc2 is a mile, he sometimes walks though I pass his school to get to the youngest's school so it depends if he wants to walk or not

BippityBoppity87 · 27/09/2021 14:50

DS is in Primary 1. We walk, which takes about 10 minutes (or 20 minutes with DS as he walks at a snails pace)

RussianSpy101 · 27/09/2021 14:50

DDs school is 6 miles away. We drive.

HelpingToHelpHer · 27/09/2021 14:51

Half a mile, we walk. I drive but don't own my own car as it's too costly so we walk come rain or shine unless my mums feeling particularly sympathetic.

Username7521 · 27/09/2021 14:52

It’s around 1.5 miles. We cycle generally but occasionally walk (for the dog)

Oh cycling takes about half the time as driving. Public transport is quicker than driving it

StripeyBadger · 27/09/2021 14:52

Drive. It’s about five miles through a forest and significantly more to go by road (which has no pavements).

RoseMartha · 27/09/2021 14:52

Teens school about 3 miles away. It's a good hour and ten min walk, as I did it when car broke down once.

I drop and collect as asd teen will not use the bus. On my work days I have to drive a further 7 miles on anyway.

bubblebath62636 · 27/09/2021 14:53

Primary 300 metres, we walk, 😂

DDs secondary is 1.6 miles she gets the bus.

Angel2702 · 27/09/2021 14:53

2 miles with two drop offs, we drive. No direct bus route that will take us to both schools. Had to do this last week and ended up with a half hour walk and a 40 min wait outside school for second drop off. Not something I would do regularly in bad weather.

maddening · 27/09/2021 14:55

3.5 miles, we drive, partly as it is an hour to walk there and an hour to walk back, but also as husband and I work so I do drop off and need to be at my desk and also as husband finishes at 3 so cannot set off at 2 to get ds.

JaniceBattersby · 27/09/2021 14:55

A mile. Preschool is on the same site. We walk in all weathers and always have done, even when I was pregnant, had one in a sling and two in a double buggy.

I think kids are pretty indulged these days (I count my own in this number) so it makes me feel better that at least they know what it feels like to be wet, cold and tired on the odd occasion! Appreciate not everyone has the luxury of walking and has to drive by necessity etc.

AryaStarkWolf · 27/09/2021 14:55

It's about a 30 minute walk but I drive my son on my way to work, he walks home though (he's 17)

Burnt0utMum · 27/09/2021 14:57

3 miles. We drive as it's the only way I'm not late for work.

JustMarriedBecca · 27/09/2021 14:57

2 miles as the crow flies but 3.5 by busy roads otherwise. Rural. No footpath
We drive. Parking is a nightmare.

twinkletoedelephant · 27/09/2021 14:57

3 dc 3x schools 1 walks 30min, 1 is driven in on way to work and walks/scoots home or I collect after clubs about 45min walk
The other gets a taxi both ways.. I Google mapped the walk it would be 6 1/2 hours :)

Antinerak · 27/09/2021 14:58

I drop my niece to school about 7 miles away, we drive. Her brother is in nursery about half a mile from her school, so sometimes we walk from the school as I can walk further leaning on his pushchair.

FuriousCheekyFucker · 27/09/2021 14:58

@EvilPea

Just over 10 miles. No normal bus route, and school bus is £100 per month. So drive.
Thats 40 miles a day, so 200 miles a week, maybe 800 miles per month...

So for an average petrol car doing 40 mpg, thats 20 gallons a month.

Just shy of £125 on fuel alone. I'll assume you would need the car anyway so won't topload it with other running costs such as Tax and Insurance - servicing/ wear and tear will obviously increase proportionally to the usage.

Doesn't sound very efficient to me.

CaptainSpirit · 27/09/2021 14:59

When my DD1 attended the schools preschool it was a 15 minute walk away and I used to push her in the buggy.

Now she goes to the reception class in the same location, only it takes about 25 minutes now that she walks alongside me. Grin

Peace43 · 27/09/2021 14:59

5 miles and car

PicardsFlute · 27/09/2021 15:01

We live about 15 mins on foot from school (primary) and walk both ways whatever the weather.

Babyiwantabump · 27/09/2021 15:01

5.7 miles (just checked on google maps)

We drive .

But most of the time my dad takes them in as he lives 0.4 miles away from the school
