How far is the school run and do you drive or walk?

Just curious after looking at another conversation about walking to school in the rain!

My DC primary is just over a mile and we walk but don’t have much choice over the matter as I don’t drive. If it’s very bad rain then I’ll try and arrange a lift or taxi.

Most parents walk or drive as it’s a small town with limited public transport. I’ve never seen anyone cycle in with their children thinking about it.

What does everyone else do?

Walk, it's about quarter of a mile to nursery then a mile further to my main office so I walk to both, if I'm going to court or a different office I will often drive as I won't have time to come back get the car then go to work, or DH walks DS and I just drive to work

Siameasy · 28/09/2021 13:08

750m and nowhere in our village is more than 0.4 mile. I also know where a lot of parents live within the village and many of them drive lazy bastards

Sheldock · 28/09/2021 13:12

DS- 3.8miles...mornings he walks to the bus stop, takes the bus and then walks to school. I pick him up though in the car as it's an hour wait for the bus after school, plus it's on the route to DD's school
DD- 4.2 miles...driven, she has SEN and just needs a bit of decompression time before and after school. She will cycle once she's got more settled.

Close enough I couldn’t legally park the car any closer to the school than my house already is. We walk, it’s one of the reasons we chose this house.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 28/09/2021 13:23

0.2miles we walk

3scape · 28/09/2021 14:08

I have a large bike for stuff. It's only 1 mile, so straightforward to cycle.

When I was at school I had a 5 mile bike ride. There are bike accessories for carrying all sorts a clip for hockey stick/ tennis racket on the front fork. Cargo nets/ clips/ panniers for violins. But I've gone for a shopping bike.

TheWonderCat · 28/09/2021 14:29

0.5 miles, we walk. Well the DC scoot really. I only drive if it’s torrential rain, to be nice.

Herecomesthesun70 · 28/09/2021 14:42

About 20 foot. DC walk

Whammyyammy · 28/09/2021 14:52

Children grown up. My neighbours drives hers, it about 0.5 mile by car, due to one way system, about 400m to walk. Shes not disabled, nor have to go out after lol

ari11 · 28/09/2021 14:59

27 miles and drive. Sen school and no school closer that can meet ds needs!

funinthesun19 · 28/09/2021 15:10

It’s takes us about 20 minutes and we walk to school.
My kids are very used to walking and it doesn’t bother them. Little Autumn walks to and from school when it’s dry and sunny are lovely. When it’s chucking it down it’s a bit meh but we just get on with it.

Treaclepie19 · 28/09/2021 15:15

Half a mile. Walk!

PennyWus · 28/09/2021 15:51

1.2 miles, walk or scooter. In terrible rain in the morning we would drive as it is horrible having wet feet at school. We like walking in snow, wind and normal rain.

TooMuchCheesecake · 28/09/2021 15:58

Half a mile. We always walk, in all weathers.

Glitterblue · 28/09/2021 16:00

About a mile and a half. I used to walk DD and now she's year 7 she walks with a friend.

Tulips15 · 28/09/2021 16:06

2min drive, We drive as I go to work straight and pick up straight from work.
I would be late if walked

HagridHair · 28/09/2021 16:06

Literally across the road. I can see the school from our landing. Probs takes about 2 mins? Only that long because I make sure they use the only crossing in the village which I can also see from the front door

Okbye · 28/09/2021 16:07

3-4 minute walk. Always walk come shine, rain or snow

Concestor · 28/09/2021 16:47

6 miles. I drive, obviously.

caringcarer · 28/09/2021 16:48

Special secondary school 12.5 miles each way, twice a day.

MrsTophamHat · 28/09/2021 16:54

Two streets away and I always walk. By the time i'd parked and got my youngest in and out of the carseat/pram, I doubt I'd save much time. I don't expect to be driving my children to school when they are secondary age.

babybythesea · 28/09/2021 17:06

3 miles. We drive (DD1 gets the school bus - there is one for secondary but not for primary).

i work at the school and usually have stuff to take in.
Also, although it is not a huge distance, it is very rural. There is not a single pavement between us and school. Some of the roads have only space for one car and stone walls - no where to go if a tractor comes.

ConstanceGracy · 28/09/2021 17:13

It’s only a 10 minute walk for us so no need to drive thankfully unless the rain is biblical.

worriedandannoyed · 28/09/2021 17:15

@EvilPea

Just over 10 miles. No normal bus route, and school bus is £100 per month. So drive.
The school bus is probably a lot cheaper than what it costs you in petrol!
MeAndDebbieMcGee · 28/09/2021 17:17

10 miles. We walk. It's good for resilience and stops me selfishly using petrol that could go to a life saving NHS hero instead.
