How far is the school run and do you drive or walk?

Just curious after looking at another conversation about walking to school in the rain!

My DC primary is just over a mile and we walk but don’t have much choice over the matter as I don’t drive. If it’s very bad rain then I’ll try and arrange a lift or taxi.

Most parents walk or drive as it’s a small town with limited public transport. I’ve never seen anyone cycle in with their children thinking about it.

What does everyone else do?

@MeAndDebbieMcGee

10 miles. We walk. It's good for resilience and stops me selfishly using petrol that could go to a life saving NHS hero instead.

I walk 10 miles while carrying a teacher to work on my back 😇

0.2 miles DS walks by himself or with friends.

DDs tiny village primary is 1.7 miles away but semi rural. One route is on rural roads, some one-car wide with no pavements & few passing places/high banks/hedges. Other route is on busy A road with pavement for half of it & then either narrow pavement-less rural road or footpath across farmers fields. Would take about 40mins to walk.
No public transport at all or school buses.
We drive; takes 5 mins. Village has a car park opposite the school so no issues with parking either.

My children go to different schools (one at the infant campus and the other still in primary too for another year). Their schools are each a little less than a mile away, but slightly different directions making but too far to walk to one and then the other with the younger one (reception age). I'm encouraging the Y6 child to walk in, but not forcing this. So it's mainly driving the small one, and the older one walking home but coming in the car in the mornings.

About 2 miles and we walk come rain or shine.

Strangevipers · 28/09/2021 18:01

Just over 2 miles
We walk

santabetterwashhishands · 28/09/2021 18:36

3/4 of a mile and we walk

Terminallysleepdeprived · 28/09/2021 18:37

Drive, 3 miles to school, no pavements for the majority of the route and I have to drop and rush to work

Coasterfan · 28/09/2021 18:39

15 miles so a 30 mile round trip 😀 I drive two mornings and three evenings and the the rest of the time he gets the school bus.

Nogoodusername · 28/09/2021 18:54

Primary - about 5 minutes walk
Secondary - slightly over a mile so also walks, about 25 minutes

"Would cycle if it weren’t for many factors (1) big hill (2) too many bags, instruments, kit (3) and both DH & I have people facing roles and no shower facilities at work."

Electric cargo bike. Can carry multiple children and luggage up hills without breaking a sweat Smile

I don’t have somewhere safe to keep the bike at home or near the school. Have to get the train to work from near the school, as I wouldn’t get there in time by bike. Plus the drowned rat look is not great for the people facing role.

I have no idea about miles, but school is a 10 minute walk. I don't drive (learning!) so come rain or shine we're walking.

ByStarlight · 28/09/2021 21:40

5k to DS’s school from home. We cycle it.

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 28/09/2021 21:50

I moved away from the kids schools so to walk is 45 mins (longer with 7 year old!) I drive the older 2 to secondary school and the younger one we stop at our old house and walk the 10 mins. (Except work days where I drop them all at the primary which is 10 mins from the secondary) In afternoons the older two walk to the old house and meet us there. When I'm at work older two often walk the 45 mins home as they don't like the bus.

iolaus · 28/09/2021 21:54

About 40 houses - and walk

For the comp it's 4.8 miles and get the school bus

lucie82 · 28/09/2021 21:56

Ds is 3 miles away I drive him then go home and pick up dd for her school which is just over 1 mile away

cadburyegg · 28/09/2021 21:57

0.8 miles. I do a combination. I much prefer to walk and the kids go on their scooters. But I do drive 3/4 of the way sometimes if DS2 is tired (he is 3.5, hypermobile, does 4 days at preschool and tires easily), or if it's raining, or if I'm going straight to the office after drop off.

RedSoloCup · 28/09/2021 22:08

Half a mile and walk except in extreme circumstances, a lot in our rod drive though!
