How far is the school run and do you drive or walk?

Just curious after looking at another conversation about walking to school in the rain!

My DC primary is just over a mile and we walk but don’t have much choice over the matter as I don’t drive. If it’s very bad rain then I’ll try and arrange a lift or taxi.

Most parents walk or drive as it’s a small town with limited public transport. I’ve never seen anyone cycle in with their children thinking about it.

What does everyone else do?

One school is 0.5 miles in one direction, the other is 1.9 miles in the opposite direction.

We always walk, have never used the car, bus, bike or a lift.

Nursery is 3 miles away, quite hilly and narrow lanes. If it’s nice-ish weather I cycle and my 3yo goes in the trailer.

TheGrumpyGoat · 27/09/2021 15:41

Just under a mile. We walk on my days off, drive on the days I have to go straight to work afterwards.

shouldistop · 27/09/2021 15:41

0.2 miles, we walk obviously Smile

PaperDolphin · 27/09/2021 15:44

About an 8 minute walk

qualitygirl · 27/09/2021 15:44

Just over 2 miles. But we are rural with no footpaths so we drive to school. And also I do drop off on the way to work

EmotionalSupportBear · 27/09/2021 15:44

about 3 miles, and we have to drive.

firstimemamma · 27/09/2021 15:45

Pre-school every day. 15 min walk whatever the weather.

stargirl1701 · 27/09/2021 15:45

4 miles on rural 60mph roads. They get a school bus. Primary.

Fallagain · 27/09/2021 15:49

0.7 miles, I walk and DC either cycles or scoots but occasionally walks. On a couple of occasional I have driven if I needed to be somewhere straight after or when it was been horrific weather - the school route is open to the North Sea.

usernotfound0000 · 27/09/2021 15:49

Just over half a mile. Walk when we can but sometimes I might need to go straight to the office after drop off (hasn't happened since Covid!) and likewise at home time, we might drive to the supermarket or soft play after school. Probably 95% of the time we walk.

TokyoSushi · 27/09/2021 15:51

0.3 miles, we walk unless torrential.

Saz12 · 27/09/2021 15:53

Around 3 miles. But rural - 60mph road, no pavement, blind corners. I drive! Usually I drop DC about 500m from school and they walk from there, as I hate the parking chaos!

heymammy · 27/09/2021 15:54

Primary school is a mile away, we walk unless I have to go in to the office for 9 (I mostly wfh). I did start bringing my bike in the morning so I could get home quicker to start work but I got 2 punctures in 2 days so I've lost the notion! In really bad wind or rain I will drive.

High school is 2.5 miles away and dd gets the train otherwise it's about a 45 minute walk.

inappropriateraspberry · 27/09/2021 15:55

350yds - a 3 min walk!

Mol1628 · 27/09/2021 15:55

10/15 minute walk no matter what the weather. I have a car but don’t use it for the school run, it’s quicker to walk because of traffic/parking

ChickenSchnitzel · 27/09/2021 15:56

10 miles, school minibus takes them door to door.

Shmithecat2 · 27/09/2021 15:58

1.2 miles. We drive.

EvilPea · 27/09/2021 15:59

@FuriousCheekyFucker
It’s not an average car Wink
You have to upfront it termly and I don’t have that. £30 every 2 weeks is easier to manage. Tax and insurance is needed anyway. Wear and tear isn’t really an issue as i work in the motor trade.
So it’s not much of a saving but it is slightly cheaper and more manageable. It also means they can do a club if they want, and mornings are more flexible. That £100 is per child, Chuck in a sibling and you are saving.

BlueBooby · 27/09/2021 16:01

0.9 miles. We walk.

TinselTime21 · 27/09/2021 16:01

3 miles to pre school. Dual carriage way half of it and busy A road the rest.
We drive.

CheesusWept · 27/09/2021 16:01

School is 0.2 miles away.
DD is 10 and walks there and back alone.

Kendodd · 27/09/2021 16:04

15 miles away, state school.
School bus (at a cost of £1,200 (not a typo) each per year!!!)

Twizbe · 27/09/2021 16:05

0.8 miles and I walk.

Fbawtft · 27/09/2021 16:10

We’re 0.5 miles away and walk. It’s a tiny village school and we have the furthest walk of anyone at the school. Many of the other parents seem genuinely baffled that we walk and lots that live closer drive. I’ve never understood why. You can’t even park close to school so seems madness to me to try to drive.
On rare occasions if I am very late leaving work I will pick them up in the car. But that is very unusual
