To disagree with NHS only petrol stations?

pistachio20 · 27/09/2021 11:08

Some petrol stations around me have now said that they are only allowing in NHS staff to refuel - apparently checking ID.

I find this completely ridiculous and unfair - not only because the majority of NHS staff where I live can easily get public transport to work (most who I know don’t drive to work anyway, and get train/bus anyway due to lack of free parking!).

So many crucial jobs require people to drive, let alone people with caring responsibilities, mobility issues, etc.

AIBU to think that it’s unfair?

I’m nhs and think it’s bullshit

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 27/09/2021 21:28

There are suggestions round my neck of the woods that all key workers should get priority although I'm not sure how status can be proved. How would this be fair, my DS works in finance and is classed as a KW but works from home. I work in leisure and DH hospitality if we dont go to work we dont get paid. We are key workers in our childrens eyes, to feed them, to cloth them and to keep them warm- cant do that if we can't pay the bills.

MyMabel · 27/09/2021 21:29

Our local garage have put a £30 limit on fuel except for emergency services and NHS workers, they need to show their NHS badge before fuelling but they haven’t banned everyone except NHS staff. Just they get unlimited fuel 😂

AICM · 27/09/2021 21:37

Funny how some jobs were SO vital a few months ago that those people had to actually accept a higher risk of death and go in no matter what whilst every body else fucked off home for 12 months. Today those same workers are not so vital.

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 21:40

The blind hero worship of the nhs will be its downfall. I am
Constantly trying to tell my manger that. It’s enraging me to be honest.

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 21:41

Yep, along with the shitty TikTok videos. But then I am Old school.
Pixxie7 · 27/09/2021 21:43

Totally agree not all nhs staff are essential yes they did a brilliant job but continue even now to get benefits way above other occupations which are equally important. Whilst hundreds on UC face having to choose between eating and heating, country has gone mad.

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 21:48

Big lolz at everyone apart from nhs was on furlough 🙄.
My Dh was ensuring that electricity supply was maintained but unfortunately without that NHS hero status.

phantomgirl22 · 27/09/2021 21:54

@Springleaves

I work for the nhs and am frankly embarrassed about these posts on social media.
Me too!! It's bloody ridiculous!
OnTheBoardwalk · 27/09/2021 21:55

I must admit I was surprised to see an ambulance at a petrol station rather than their own re fuelling station. They should put the blue lights on and get in the front of the queue

Frontline absolutely should get priority although I do remember an incident in 1st class years ago. A passenger said she was entitled to a 1st class upgrade for free. Reason why she worked for a charity. When pushed she said that charity was the NHS. When pushed again she worked in the back office

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 21:58

@phantomgirl22 thank goodness, I feel as if I am a lone wolf amongst all this. I am getting so cross about things being posted but my trust has a blanket ban. There is no compassion for patients or relatives in some of these social media accounts. I am furious.

ElephantOfRisk · 27/09/2021 21:59

My DH is NHS, he hates all the hero stuff and the clapping etc etc. He drives an ambulance, not blue light as it's normally patient transport, so between hospitals, hospices or care-homes or actual homes etc etc but they are also supporting A&E by doing less urgent jobs for them. He gets his petrol at normal service stations, they don't have a dedicated supply.

cherubtastic · 27/09/2021 22:01

Agreed AICM! We are good enough to be front line cannon fodder when it suits. If wards weren’t staffed and they had relatives that didn’t receive care everyone would soon shout at us again. It’s easy to state why should they get any priority until it affects you personally- then it quickly becomes “Why didn’t they get priority to get petrol to be able to care for my loved one”.

I am just very annoyed as have 4 family members who managed to fill up tanks this weekend - all retired but ‘needed’ to as they have important social events and library books to return this week (no worries that they have a free bus passes) 🙄 😡 Yet I am a nurse who can’t find any, am riding on empty and have to walk an hour each way to a 13 hr shift tomorrow and my sil can’t get to work at all and she is teacher. That is just my personal experience and doesn’t even begin to address all the other key workers out there!! The whole situation is frustrating and stressful for everyone.

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 22:03

I actually hate the sanctimonious, judgy people. I bet they are clapping each other on the back.

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 22:05

‘Driving on fumes’ fuck off.

Littlescottiedog · 27/09/2021 22:12

I'd be fine for it to be NHS only. I won't be able to get to work and would be more than happy to sit at home teaching via Google classroom rather than have my usual commute into school. Instead of getting there for 7:30am, I could have a leisurely breakfast and log in at 9am. Bliss!

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 22:18

So no one needs gas, electricity, water, social services, animal rescue. I am seriously wondering about the intelligence of the great British public.

Until you run out of breakfast and electricity because "NHS only" means;

No other essential workers can get petrol.

DroopyClematis · 27/09/2021 22:28

Working for the NHS seems to be a get out of jail card.
I don't see why a NHS pen pusher/non frontline worker should have priority over a teacher/carer/meals on wheels deliverer etc...

MurielSpriggs · 27/09/2021 22:33

‘Driving on fumes’ fuck off.
Charming!

Can I remind you of their recent voting patterns. No one else in the world is wondering about the intelligence of the great British public!
ShinyThingsDistractMe · 27/09/2021 22:35

I work in the community supporting the homeless. I'm a front line service for them. Pandemic nearly burnt us out and ran us in to the ground, we had to eradicate homelessness, not catch covid and deal with everything else.

You know how hard it is to "eradicate homelessness" yeah it's fucking impossible especially during a global pandemic where GP's drug and alcohol services, therapy, mental health appointments, social services and the job center all dissapeard practically overnight 🤦🏻‍♀️

Now with a fuel shortage how do people expect me to drive around the community helping people. I can't leave them, they need help but that's ok Sandra the admin Clark on ward 4 can get a fuel tank, because if she doesn't file those notes away, god know what will happen. 😂

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 22:38

Yes@MurielSpriggsi think we have all had enough. I assume you work for the NHS? Or do you have anything to add?
Laying my cards in the table, I qualified in 1992 and am horrified by the social media posts by mostly trainee paramedics. In some cases it’s private ambulance staff who are sub contracted.

What do you bring to the table apart from ‘charming’?

IvorHughJarrs · 27/09/2021 22:40

@Comedycook

And I'm absolutely sick of places offering discounts for NHS staff. Plenty earn decent money...they're not all poverty stricken angels ffs.
Some of us, who are not poverty stricken, use those discounts to contribute more to food banks and charities.

Envy and nastiness are not nice characteristics

Springleaves · 27/09/2021 22:41

It’s all about the likes on social media isn’t it? How many of you ha e been fighting for the last 20 years?
