To disagree with NHS only petrol stations?

pistachio20 · 27/09/2021 11:08

Some petrol stations around me have now said that they are only allowing in NHS staff to refuel - apparently checking ID.

I find this completely ridiculous and unfair - not only because the majority of NHS staff where I live can easily get public transport to work (most who I know don’t drive to work anyway, and get train/bus anyway due to lack of free parking!).

So many crucial jobs require people to drive, let alone people with caring responsibilities, mobility issues, etc.

AIBU to think that it’s unfair?

I sure hope you don't ever need an NHS nurse to care for you.

With the way NHS functions, I think everyone has hopes about that...

cricketmum84 · 29/09/2021 14:05

This thread is so saddening. Some people have absolutely no idea what our NHS staff have gone through over the last 20 months.

Wazzzzzzzup · 29/09/2021 14:11

And some people obviously have no idea what many non NHS people went through in last 20 months....

OhWhyNot · 29/09/2021 14:14

But no one is bashing non NHS staff

It’s almost as though many feel we all act entitled (of course some will take the piss the NHS as all work forces will have their share of arses)

Just another NHS staff bashing from MN

Used to it now

This at least they were on full pay and vaccinated before anyone else.

No, just showing how little they think of other proffessions while repeating the same thing

NHS staff, yes, I can see some of them might need fuel more than I do, definitely I do very occasional care work but I cycle there and my car sits nearly completely out of fuel. An NHS employee living at the end of my road who works at the local hospital doesn't need fuel for work as much as my husband, whose job is to do with maintaining and safety for public transport, literally all over the country. Now, you might not agree with that. But right now the nurse who works in our local hospital is catching the bus for some shifts to reduce her petrol consumption from her car so she definitely has fuel for her out of hours shifts. Not something my husband can do. Her job is in a specific department helping people, not life saving - his job is very specific too, probably affects 1000s journeys with each job. BUT I wouldn't imagine someone working in a garage is going to bother sitting there sorting through a queue full of people's reasons for needing petrol. They want to sell fuel, they don't want aggressive customers, they want to be seen to be responsible and get a bit of sympathy themselves for a day or a week whilst waiting on more fuel. NHS is easy. It's a huge amount of people, it gets their fuel sold but it keeps the queue down so they're not going to get police having to move on their customers. The garage staff will be able to know NHS - possibly a key worker but how would they know about much less well known lines of work? My husband's work I'd just says his small company name - and job title which to anyone outside the industry doesn't really convey whether he's really "key" or not. So why would a local garage really be fussed about splitting hairs.

They could just as easily limit the spend. Or check fuel gauges I guess

OhWhyNot · 29/09/2021 14:24

I can assure you I never received full pay for all the overtime I did it’s added up to days not hours but yes I still have a job I’m grateful for

I was vaccinated in group 1 but not the priority )that was for those in more vulnerable positions) as I work face to face with many who struggle to understand the need to socially distance. That’s to keep us all safe

And neither did we have full PPE for sometime if that is the next thing thrown at us

This thread is just becoming spiteful

Wazzzzzzzup · 29/09/2021 14:27

I believe this is just the fairest solution rather than nitpicking who is apparently more important.

Awww you think the NHS are the only ones doing unpaid overtime bless.

Some NHS staff not all!

Also some people from all other jobs, sectors, lifestyles etc.

There are not many buses that run in conjunction with shift start /finish times where I live and if you can use the buses if you miss one it's an hours wait for the next. In the department that I work in we have an on call Commitment (13hrs)usually once a week where you can be called back In to work at 15 minutes notice for emergency/maternity work occasionally more than once in that period...... What do you suggest we do...... Jog!

Wazzzzzzzup · 29/09/2021 14:39

No problem @Offmyfence happens to all of us😁

LoveBannaSplits · 29/09/2021 14:41

Everyone's need is, important in their lives, and their lies the problem, this is not one problem, This is millions of problems together, most people in the ques have a important need, Be kind to each other, it really can work Xx

Beastieboys · 29/09/2021 14:42

Not arguing with what you say but anybody working from home wouldn't get the chit that you need to get fuel. The Last time this occurred we had to get a one time pass from our boss stamped with the hospital stamp and we could only get so much and not into petrol cans

toooothacheee · 29/09/2021 14:43

Awww you think the NHS are the only ones doing unpaid overtime bless.

You sound really spiteful and bitter.

It sounds like you have a real tough time with the caring role you have, but there is no need to fight over who works harder/deserves fuel/had a harder time in the pandemic...

Situations like this really bring out either the absolute best, or absolute worst in people.

But that's the same as an on call electrician, plumber etc.

They all need access to a mode of transport, they can't jog there either.

Beastieboys · 29/09/2021 14:46

Please enlighten me with the "some sort of back up" that you seem to think exists!

Lizlou85 · 29/09/2021 14:47

As the issue is lack of HGV drivers shouldn't they get priority. Most depots, including the one I work in is out of town. If I can't get petrol Im stuck. Yes, I could walk 2miles to the train station, get the hourly train in to the town nearest the depot and walk another mile from the station to the depot but as I work until to 8pm, when our last HGV leaves for the night and the last train leaves at 745, doesn't really work. But then people don't seem to understand public transport isn't an option for everyone.

Beastieboys · 29/09/2021 15:08

It's nothing to do with money it's to do with ha ING the person with their skill set in the pla e that they can use it. The media and public are giving it large about cancer patients not getting treatment, operating lists getting longer and relatives In hospital not getting the attention that they need. Who do you think does these jobs??? Nobody that I know or work with thinks that they are special or wanting special treatment. Yes you will get people who parade around with NHS badges clattering on lanyards round their neck to make the world aware of their specialness but true carers just pop them into their pockets and are busy trying to get their (all to few) heads down and work at the back log..... Please dont tar all of us with attention seeking few

Miisty · 29/09/2021 15:25

In the last petrol crisis I could get petrol due to working for NHS as Community Midwife Luckily staff in Safeway’s/Morrison’s knew me as their had been patients of mine Needed fuel for call outs at night homebirths etc often drove a 100miles a day nearest hospital 18 miles Fine if regular public transport but often hospital shifts start before public transport is running well or it has stopped before shifts end

Instead of blaming each other, calling the general public "stupid", deciding who is or isn't worthy of fuel, maybe we should direct our ire and frustration at the muppets running the country.

How have we ended up in such a mess?
I know it's easy to blame Brexiteers, but who actually convinced them that leaving was such a good idea in the first place?

I don't think rioting is ever the answer but at the moment we seem quite accepting of what's going on.

The media caused this! With BP only saying 6 of their stations were facing problems it was blown way out of proportion, must of been real slow news days cos after 2-3 days of scaremongering headlines its deathly quiet in the media. Fled full of Kate attending the Bond premier or something else.

Wow just like its no longer important news...funny that!

All you peolle who fell for it and went and panic bought...therefore self manifesting a fuel crisis when there wasn't one in the first place!

Congratulations you got played! Kikenthey played you about toilet roll, food shortages and more recently the Xmas will be ruined get your presents now scaremongering.

Wake up and stop falling for it!

I see yday covid scaremongering gerogn was starting with articles about a fourth wave i mean ffs

Wonder what bs panic they will create next...generating crisis after crisis to keep you scared, angry etc.
