To disagree with NHS only petrol stations?

Some petrol stations around me have now said that they are only allowing in NHS staff to refuel - apparently checking ID.

I find this completely ridiculous and unfair - not only because the majority of NHS staff where I live can easily get public transport to work (most who I know don’t drive to work anyway, and get train/bus anyway due to lack of free parking!).

So many crucial jobs require people to drive, let alone people with caring responsibilities, mobility issues, etc.

AIBU to think that it’s unfair?

No why would I think that ? the response was to your post

This at least they were on full pay and vaccinated before anyone else

Not quite sure what you have against NHS but you come across as quite spiteful

OhWhyNot · 29/09/2021 17:50

*NHS staff

Not the NHS I can understand why people are angry at how the NHS is run but staff collectively no

This thread is so saddening. Some people have absolutely no idea what our NHS staff have gone through over the last 20 months.

There are 1.5 million people work for the NHS most staff never went near a covid patient. Also people have lost jobs suffered other stresses.

I'm sure Brexit did contribute to the driver shortage but its not the main factor. France Germany right across Europe are having the same issues. This pandemic and of cause our fellow selfish humans are making matters much worse. The media are there to sell stories, scare mongering is always a good seller. Christmas is finished FFS come on christmas is christmas I'd celebrate with beans on toast and a long walk, plus a warm toddy before bed. Christmas has gotten too commercial anyway, let's get back to family and friends. Let's just eat a delicious meal of whatever we can get and be bloody grateful we are still breathing. Alot of families are not together because of this pandemic, mine included (inlaws). Be kind be mindful be careful.

The media has a lot to answer for. Most are just "copy and paste" outlets anyway, so TV and online newspapers etc just watch what stories the others are running with and do "me too" articles as well. Very lazy "journalism". When one runs a report on something happening, the others just scrat around trying to find a different way of reporting the same.

No they aren’t. They do have a driver shortage due to COVID, but it isn’t having the same impact:

They still have free movement so the E European drivers can easily go back to jobs in France, Germany etc.

They are in the single market so goods can travel quickly and efficiently without wasting hours at passport and custom control.

They are in the single market so what drivers they do have can be used more efficiently. When a load from Germany is dropped in Sweden they can then pick up a load in Sweden and take it to Italy. The possibility of a ‘back load’ in and out of Europe is much harder for us.

Europe is not experiencing empty supermarket shelves and forecourt shortages.

Our COVID-related driver shortages have been massively exacerbated by Brexit. Europe’s has not.

I think NHS only petrol stations is ridiculous! Not all jobs within the NHS are essential and some can be done from home (admin, etc)

There are people in other jobs and the private sector that deserve the petrol as much as NHS workers. Everybody should be given the same opportunity to fill their car.

I've been reading this thread for the past few days and I am a bit confused about the comments of admin in the NHS working from home. I work in admin in the NHS and none of the admin staff have worked from home. Also seems to be a lot of hatred and bitterness against the NHS. Is it the system or the actual employees you hate? Surely this applies to all companies? Some good, some bad. And the comment about paying our wages. Do we also not help contribute paying our own wages? Or do you think another perk of working in the NHS is not paying tax or NI?

Not really it's the entitled sorts who don't realise there is much more essential workers than the NHS.

I know of someone who worked in NHS payroll (so 9-5 job, not patient facing), who would stand polishing her halo when there was the Thursday evening clapathon... and relish in jumping the queue and getting all the freebies just on account of who employed her.

Then I know nurses who put on their FB that they don't want free pizza etc. They still had their jobs, and wished takeaways etc would give free stuff to families who had lost everything. They found the hero worship embarrassing. They were doing the job they chose to go into and were paid for.

I know people employed by the NHS for years who have never worked inside an actual hospital.
In our town you could work in a rehabilitation centre, community dental service, incontinence supplies, wheelchair or equipment stores etc and be NHS staff.

A relative of mine is NHS admin, and has worked from home since March 2020.
She answers the telephone to people wanting to know contact details for certain departments, takes messages for Physio's, things like that.

Ddot · 01/10/2021 06:09

My friend works for a company employed by NHS. Gets nothing, not even ppe or an early vaccine and its more or less front line. He was terrified and had to resort to hadouts for ppe and steaming his disposable masks on the kettle. I clapped for him
