So... all things considered... aren't we up sh-t creek?
-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare. I'm worried dear reader, and 'keep calm and carry on' doesn't help.

It’s horrible and scary but I reckon when my grandma gave birth to my dad in 1943 she also wasn’t feeling too optimistic about the state of things either.

Don’t let it eat you alive.

Hdhdjejdj · 27/09/2021 18:59

That’s a shame @Tealightsandd. It feels like there is so much jealousy and resentment these days.

This is supposed to be peace time.

There is no excuse.

@DagenhamRoundhouse

If anyone can remember them, we had all this in the 1970s. I remember shortages of petrol, bakery strikes, high taxes, 3 day week with power cuts. It was an awful decade really despite some great music! What we're experiencing is nothing new. We've just been cossetted and spoilt through the 80s and 90s and 00s.
Fucking hell, didn't realise that not having power cuts etc was too much to ask for! I didn't really want to go back to the winter of discontent thanks.
Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 19:04

@hdhdjejdj

Works well though - divide and rule. Unfortunately that seems to be the preference for both our main political parties (the NIMBY Lib Dems too).

It's easier than having decent policies.

You're right. It is a shame.

boobot1 · 27/09/2021 19:05

@LeavesAre

It's bad yes.

I think there is more to come with the world finances 2008 style.

I agree but bigger, much much bigger.
MarshaBradyo · 27/09/2021 19:06

I do think we could be a bit nicer all round too though

Ok irl everyone I know is nice pretty much, and positive.

But this thread is fairly brutal re U.K.

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 19:07

So silly too. We're all the same (rather unpleasant) species. Us humans.

MarshaBradyo · 27/09/2021 19:08

Ah Tea I’m such an optimist

We’re all the same, wanting nice things we just react badly when people have a go.

msgreen · 27/09/2021 19:09

We are still suffering from global pandemic, Australia still haven't got vaccine sorted .BORIS is a sham , Its madddness no masks no social distancing its going to get worse . We voted for brexit as a nation
it was always going to be a hard road out.
We must not forget how many have been furloughed and the help
that we have had .
Maybe next time you will all vote green ,things need to change relying
on fossil fuels and huge corporations just isn't sustainable

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 19:11

We all need some cake. (A few drinks and cigarettes too, for those who indulge).

Better than arguing, and it helps the economy too. Cake

@MyPatronusIsACat

Anyone who thinks any other Government would have done better, with Brexit, Covid, lack of lorry drivers, NHS crisis, food shortages, and petrol issues blah blah blah, is utterly deluded.

No other Government would have done any better. Just thank your lucky stars that Jeremy Corbyn lost the election, or you'd have had HIM running the show. Shock THEN you'd have good reason to panic!!!

To be fair Brexit would not have happened if anyone other than the Tory's were voted in!
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2021 19:18

The 70’s were awful. But driven by very different problems.

This is a government imposed shitstorm.

Other countries have hgv driver shortages but in the EU they can move goods and drivers across the continent easily. Brexit means that isn't possible in the UK, hence the visas now being offered.
It's not that other countries have no issues, the point is that NO OTHER COUNTRY HAS THE COMPLICATIONS OF BREXIT ON TOP. That's what makes it worse in the UK. And then things spiral.

naynayisay · 27/09/2021 19:48

It's in a very sorry state right now and we're only just inside autumn. As soon as the weather gets much colder, we hunker down in our homes more etc I believe the situation to sink in and be much much worse if we carry on the way we are.

I know many of our issues are international issues but our government haven't helped matters.

There were a lot of problems in the 1970s but it seemed a happier time.
Thewiseoneincognito · 27/09/2021 20:06

Dreading to think how things will look by Christmas. My local M&S food hall shelves were half empty tonight, have never seen it like that before, loads of out of stocks on freezer items, fruit and veg, ready meals, dairy, literally bare shelves at 6pm.

Very accurate.

Don’t forget national insurance hikes, benefit cuts, service removals oh and a little thing called climate change…

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2021 20:19

Trouble is though, I’ve just watched an interview with a Polish truck driver. He doesn’t want to come on a short term visa.

popmimiboo · 27/09/2021 20:20

Sooo, if you lived in another country, would you come back to live in the U.K. or stay put?

I live in France. Have brought up my children bilingual and bicultural and had always wanted to return "home" one day in the future...

Now, not a chance!! Not if you paid me. I would be very concerned about health care, it is just not comparable to what we have here. Even pre Covid, the last few times I was "home", I was surprised by little things like the state of the roads (pot holes, overgrown hedgerows,) town centres (litter, boarded up shops,) lack of choice in supermarkets, food quality...
It's very, very sad and I can't see any improvements any time soon as we (yes, I am still legally and morally British) are just too compliant and willing to take absolute shit from the disgustingly incompetent government without question Sad

Who would? After basically being told sis off back to where you came from after years of hard work, who would give up their permanent job at home for a 3 month visa?

This shower of a government is unbelievable.
