So... all things considered... aren't we up sh-t creek?
-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare. I'm worried dear reader, and 'keep calm and carry on' doesn't help.

I am a remainer but I like the idea of painting my front door in my preferred colour, rather than the one I’m told to use by the residents’ committee.

Lollee · 27/09/2021 18:22

The whole world is in a messy shit storm because people are having too many kids and the population has doubled in the last 50 years. Glad I won't be around for the next doubling although I could cry for my kids and grandkids.
Not enough of anything to go round, the world is dying and cannot support so much life.

onlychildhamster · 27/09/2021 18:24

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow I moved country to live in London..people come all over the world to live in London...London is an amazing place to live in in terms of culture, parks, restaurants, multiculturalism but it is the capital city of a country that is badly managed. But at the same time, well managed countries can be extremely boring to live in. I come from one (Singapore). It is terribly efficient. It is also terribly boring. At least in London/UK, there is never a dull moment! I have learned how to laugh at myself.

notimagain · 27/09/2021 18:24

@BobbiPink

Uk citizens have visa free access to almost every attractive economy in the world- you could go to your chosen destination for a longer visit and get a sense of the lifestyle and potential job opportunities there.

I think the starting point for Uk citizens thinking is this is to look at work permit/skill requirements in a country of their choice, rather than jetting off on speck on a “look see” Visa free or on a limited stay visa.

As far as longer visits go ATM many UK citizens are even restricted to a max 90 days within 180 in many parts of Europe…

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 18:26

Today there are 165,000 homeless in London. More people than the entire populations of many UK towns.

Nowhere has suffered more than London. The 'investment' of the last 30-40 years aka rich people making money out of London (before fucking off to the shires or abroad). Yeah so great for socially cleansed or homeless Londoners.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2021 18:28

London is dirty, expensive, overcrowded and Londoncentric. I didn’t find it amazing in the least.

Much prefer Manchester or Leeds.

MarshaBradyo · 27/09/2021 18:30

When people choose a place to live where they are happy is it important to tell others why their place is really shit..

Isn’t it good we all like different things?

CarryOnNurse20 · 27/09/2021 18:31

@onlychildhamster I always think that when I go to other countries! and in Malmö when I lived there. Beautiful, lovely, interesting but few places have the same buzz and excitement as the UK (I prefer manchetser to london though too @ArseInTheCoOpWindow.

I am a remainer but I like the idea of painting my front door in my preferred colour, rather than the one I’m told to use by the residents’ committee.
It was a discussion and vote that included all the residents, not a committee diktat.

Some people voted against it but they had agreed a vote was democratic and that they would go along with the vote whatever the outcome.

The reasoning was that it was part of keeping the area looking like a quality place to live. Likewise making sure outdoor spaces were neat and tidy.

The completely different mentality was what I was highlighting.

Currently in France, no fuel shortage, no empty shelves in supermarkets, think the government have the media in their pockets as Brexit barely mentioned, they think we’re all stupid and just like their Mantra “Get Brexit Done” they believe if they just keep saying the same thing over and over we’ll believe it.

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 18:35

@onlychildhamster

Horses for courses Smile. Just as I said upthread everyone, wherever they're from, is an individual - with different preferences. Personally I think that Singapore is far superior to London (and anywhere else in the UK). As reported in world surveys, a much higher quality of life in Singapore.

Still you're right that London, despite all the abuse it's taken for so many years, does have a lot to offer. Not least tolerant and welcoming locals. Unlike it seems some other parts of the UK.

Mygirlruby · 27/09/2021 18:36

I live in Scotland, so feel like we had a better leader through Covid, but otherwise the same . I truly believe that Brexit is at the root of all this, exacerbated by Covid. I'm worried that people in England will vote a Tory government back in at the next election. I don't understand it all all. Why do they do it?

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 18:37

I hear they're currently doing a good trade in eggs.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 27/09/2021 18:38

If anyone can remember them, we had all this in the 1970s. I remember shortages of petrol, bakery strikes, high taxes, 3 day week with power cuts. It was an awful decade really despite some great music! What we're experiencing is nothing new. We've just been cossetted and spoilt through the 80s and 90s and 00s.

LoisLane66 · 27/09/2021 18:40

If you think that panicking will alter the present and foreseeable situations, then go ahead and get yourself in that mode.
Personally, I think you'd be wasting your time.

You're so right. Too many of us.

StellakateT · 27/09/2021 18:43

So agree with you! Labour in government we’d be in huge debt with their borrowing! Covid happening with Brexit hasn’t helped but we do have running water, sanitation, food and mobile phones. Sorry that was a bit tongue in cheek but let’s count our blessings.

LoisLane66 · 27/09/2021 18:43

I remember the butter mountain and sugar shortages and electricity being cut off by the National Grid on a rota, 4 hours on and 4 off.
You had to go to a local shop to find out the times when you could cook and switch lights on.

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 18:47

@Hdhdjejdj

I’m truly astonished. If you swapped the word northerners for black people or Eastern Europeans, you lot would be up in arms. You really are a very odd bunch or people.
Even more so if you swapped the word 'Londoners' for black people or Eastern Europeans. Then again I dare say that's what's behind some of the anti Londoner bigotry. Afterall Londoners are one of the most diverse groups in the UK.
Sarahlou63 · 27/09/2021 18:48

Just saw this on FB;

Five years ago I wanted to separate from my partner. Three years later we eventually parted ways, a bit acrimonious but we got there. It's been two years, she's ok, she's got her life all sorted and is happy. Me? Oh, I'm still looking, no one on the scene just yet but it was always going to be tricky early on, sigh. Lately the household chores have been mounting up, piles of washing to do, the garden's a mess, the curtains need taking down, the hoovering desperately needs to be done and the bins are so overflowing the rats are having a field day. Out of sheer desperation I asked my ex could she come back on a temporary basis up until Christmas to help out. I was aghast at her reply. "You wanted this shit, you sort your own mess out"!I'm gobsmacked, did I do something wrong?🤔🙄

and still people blab on with the 'everything is absolute dogshit but at least we don't have Labour lol'

half-witted rubbish.

Hdhdjejdj · 27/09/2021 18:50

@Tealightsandd I don’t recognise the anti-London bigotry you claim there is. I was there at the weekend and it looks in good shape to me. How much were your two extra stations on the Northern line again?

Tealightsandd · 27/09/2021 18:55

It's ubiquitous @Hdhdjejdj. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had to speak out against it a while back.

You don't have to look far. You can see examples of it right here on this thread.

Foofedifiknow · 27/09/2021 18:57

Anytime anyone mentions “the whole world”
or “global” in this context of explaining the UK sh**show it just strikes me as delusional Brexiteer denialism. Like some other poster said it’s not Voldemort or Candyman you can say the Brexit word even if BBC etc etc dont. Non British news sources (or Private Eye ) are better for learning just how corrupt the current cabal are.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2021 18:58

How does anyone know how Labour would cope in this situation?

We’ve been governed by a load of Tory idiots for 11 years. How can you possibly predict what Labour would do. It’s the Conservatives that got us into this mess, not Kabour.
