So... all things considered... aren't we up sh-t creek?
-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare. I'm worried dear reader, and 'keep calm and carry on' doesn't help.

@LeavesAre

It's bad yes.

I think there is more to come with the world finances 2008 style.

That would definitely make things even more difficult. What makes you feel we’re heading for a recession?
MyPatronusIsACat · 25/09/2021 21:06

Meh, we've been through worse. We'll be OK.

Newgirls · 25/09/2021 21:06

We have to vote for different people and hope they are able to form a decent government, one MP at a time. Ours is a decent intelligent Lib Dem who works hard, is honest and communicates well. If we all vote for people like that it MUST get better

Peggytheredhen · 25/09/2021 21:06

I haven't ever voted Tory and didn't vote Brexit. It's shit but it was inevitable I'm afraid. I'd love to up ship but boring reality says No.

Conscious awareness I guess? It's important to acknowledge difficult things ....

Feels like the 1970’s to me.

I was only young but remember power cuts, having no money, everything costing too much.

MyPatronusIsACat · 25/09/2021 21:09

Anyone who thinks any other Government would have done better, with Brexit, Covid, lack of lorry drivers, NHS crisis, food shortages, and petrol issues blah blah blah, is utterly deluded.

No other Government would have done any better. Just thank your lucky stars that Jeremy Corbyn lost the election, or you'd have had HIM running the show. Shock THEN you'd have good reason to panic!!!

There is a 1970s kinda feel to all this I must agree...
Rosewaterblossom · 25/09/2021 21:10

It's no worse than any other difficult time in history...
The UK is always a bit of a laughing stock because we just aren't the same as the rest of Europe and never have been. Being neighbours with someone doesn't mean you're the same as them
..

Dollar may stop being the reserve currency, a deal was done years ago for the petro dollar. There was an agreement we all heard about USA, UK and Australia. Did you hear about the Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia deal? Crypto all over the place. Gold not doing well. Evergrande still not stable. Many billionaires buying land.

Weirdly, lots of other governments around the world have done far better than ours, kinda points to you talking nonsense there..
HeronLanyon · 25/09/2021 21:13

arseln me too. I guess we haven’t yet got to no parrain for heaters (no central heating) and candles during national power cuts and three day week and rubbish not being collected. Feels as though it wouldn’t take much though.
Funnily enough this petrol thing made me fully charge phone and find my batteries and charged them too. Odd response but felt indicated for a bit now.

Ha. I was waiting for someone to come along and say this about Jeremy Corbyn. There’s always one. Rehashing the same old bullshit. I think there is very little chance that he would be doing a worse job than the current government.

The media tried to paint a picture of a Corbyn government bringing about exactly the kind of shit-show we are seeing now. If he was in charge he would be being crucified by the media. The only difference is that the Tories are being allowed to get away with it.

It really isn't much like the '70s at all.
DesdemonaDryEyes · 25/09/2021 21:20

And what are you doing to help?

LakieLady · 25/09/2021 21:21

We do have healthcare. Perhaps not exactly as good as you want it to be

Indeed we do, and I have an operation scheduled for 7 October.

I should have been having it on Monday, but they had to cancel because they couldn't get an anaesthetist.

Cattenberg · 25/09/2021 21:22

I’ve been thinking about the public services that seem to be run on a fraying shoestring.

NHS
Education
Social Services
The justice system including Legal Aid
Some local council services

Anything else?

rocklamp · 25/09/2021 21:23

Do we have a health care system when you can't rely in an ambulance coming in the event of a heart attack or stroke? It might come, but equally, it might not. Theoretically we still have a health care system, but it's a moot point if you die waiting for someone to come.

The NHS and social care are haemorrhaging staff.

SantiagoSky · 25/09/2021 21:26

I don’t understand why Corbyn keeps coming up? Of course he would have done better, everybody would have done better! It’s completely irrelevant.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 25/09/2021 21:26

@rocklamp

Yeah, I think we're going to end up like some sorry eastern bloc country that's perpetually struggling and the rest of the world is oblivious to.

I remember years ago listening to an article on Radio 4 about Kazakhstan and how they didn't have any healthcare AND NOW THAT'S US! 😱😱😱

Nothing would surprise me now.

We don't have healthcare? Jeezo, no one told me. I'm due in the ward at 7am for my shift tomorrow, better give my boss a quick bell and see if I still have a job to go to!
MarshaBradyo · 25/09/2021 21:26

@Islamorada

If it helps Op it is not so good in other countries either. Quite a few of the same issues than here with food, services, fuel prices skyrocketing and interest rates going up.
Where are you Isla?
LaMagdalena · 25/09/2021 21:27

@Eealoty

To anyone thinking other countries have it worse in Europe. There are indeed deeper issues at hand here in the UK. It's a rotten mentality we have. Have you visited an Eastern European country in recent years (I'm not even talking about Nordic). Romania, Poland? It was beautiful. Well kept little towns on cobbled streets with civilised restaurants.. filled with locals. No drunks falling around everywhere. NO homeless. No crass behaviour around. That was my experience of a visit - off the beaten track - in an "eastern bloc" country. However, . .. Keep believing the British exceptionalism is real. It's what everyone goes back to when the media leaves out any other narrative.
I studied Central/Eastern European languages and I love Poland... but to portray it as some kind of utopia without 'deeper issues' is a very strange position to take Hmm.

(I don't necessarily disagree with the OP by the way, I hate Brexit, etc, but I think to portray the UK as uniquely bad is just another kind of 'British exceptionalism'.)

Lilimoon · 25/09/2021 21:27

The NHS is being purposefully run into the ground, death by 1000 cuts.
For example I was told I would have to wait up to a year for surgery but now all non emergency surgery has been postponed so who knows how long it will be.
In the meantime my son has been accepted for an ASD assessment- waiting time is 55 fucking weeks. No assessment = no support. He is getting nothing at all despite his MH taking a huge nose dive.
