So... all things considered... aren't we up sh-t creek?
-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Sounds like something out of a dystopian nightmare. I'm worried dear reader, and 'keep calm and carry on' doesn't help.

Not as bad as the 3 days weeks, the miners strikes, 15% inflation etc etc, of the 1970s IMO.
pontypridd · 26/09/2021 00:23

I can barely remember who Jeremy Corbyn is now. It must be the effect of Lockdown and Covid.

It's so strange that Tory defenders remember him so clearly. They must live in a present day haze.

TSSDNCOP · 26/09/2021 00:24

@Pumperthepumper interesting. You see gloating, I see nothing but opportunity for our kids. You see sneering, I'm highlighting a difference in the way we lived and live. Isn't it a good thing that both points of view can co-exist in our great country?

Except it’s not an opportunity if you have lack of choice. It’s not an opportunity for education if that means you can’t get a degree because your country needs apprentices. And we’ll have to disagree on the positive spin you’re now putting on those you called a ‘drain’.

pontypridd · 26/09/2021 00:27

England is so great @Ariela and @Evesgarden- I can't believe that we're lucky enough to be be able to match up and mirror the 3 days weeks, the miners strikes, 15% inflation etc etc, of the 1970s with our current situation here in the UK.

Our of interest how much of the following are affecting other countries - to the extent that it's a problem here?

-gas and electricity prices
-covid (masks? Pfft completed Covid mate (in England))
-council tax hikes
-inflation
-food shortages
-Brexit
-petrol

Also, I suspect you and I don’t live in the same country.

You really are just being silly now @Pumperthepumper and I think you're spoiling for a fight that, if you read what I'm saying, isn't necessary.

Which bit specifically is silly?
Redruby2020 · 26/09/2021 00:31

I wonder who will help us, as we have helped so many. Or will we now be in trouble because of the Brexit vote etc and left to rot.

Livelovebehappy · 26/09/2021 00:32

Let’s be honest. It could have all turned out a whole lot worse. Imagine Corbyn in charge, with the likes of Abbott and Rayner on the front benches. The government aren’t performing great atm, but I can’t even begin to think how the alternative would have pulled us through.

Evesgarden · 26/09/2021 00:32

@RiotAtTheRodeo JC sold the working class out. He sold the women out - in fact he kicked us out of the party. What do you expect? they focus on the young coming out of uni instead of the hard working class that had slogged away at shit jobs to keep the economy moving.

And he fucked up when he never wore a tie for the queen. He massively under appreciated the respect working class people has for her - that was his first mistake.

My family are from the North West - die hard Labour supporters. But My granny was even upset with that.He misread the room massively.

Oneliner · 26/09/2021 00:33

It's a hole and getting shittier by the day.

HighNetGirth · 26/09/2021 00:34

I spent my primary school years in a developing country. Problems on a completely different scale to anything we are facing. So, while I am not at all happy about the state of the U.K., I am not panicking either.

I do think we (ordinary people) would do well to switch off our screens and get much more involved in politics, volunteering, campaigning etc. Things don't magically get better: lots of people have to really work to make it happen.

And the people I know who volunteer or stand for election tend to be coping with all the current uncertainties more easily than those who don't. Not just because acting is better than ruminating, but because the positive experiences of others that they gain make them feel more hopeful.

Last council elections, a worrying number of people were elected unopposed and many many seats were left unfilled altogether. This is very sad as local government makes a real difference to people's lives.

Be the change you want to see etc.

I agree. I didn't even vote in the last election but I hoped Labour didn't get in

Help me imagine it, what would have happened?
Ariela · 26/09/2021 00:34

Whilst food is being thrown away on a daily basis there is no food shortage, people will not starve.
Whilst fuel is in the refineries and in the ships, ports etc, there is no fuel shortage - it's just in the wrong location temporarily.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 26/09/2021 00:36

JC still living rent-free in some posters' heads, it would seem Grin

BoredZelda · 26/09/2021 00:49

I work in the construction sector and am flat out atm

Construction is going bloody nuts at the moment. I’ve never been so busy either.

gofg · 26/09/2021 00:49

@Evesgarden & @marieantoinehairnet

What are you talking about when you quote my post?? All I said is "It really isn't everywhere" in response to a post saying that it's not just the UK, it's everywhere. Confused

I don't live in the UK - or even in Europe - I was merely pointing out that the issues the UK seems to be facing at the moment are not happening "everywhere" in the world

RiotAtTheRodeo · 26/09/2021 00:52

This kind of bullshit makes me despair.

Boris Johnson, more often than not, look like he's emerged from a 3 day bender with his artfully ruffled hair and his crumpled suits, But that's just the superficial crap. More importantly than that he lied to your beloved queen about the suspension of parliament. Have you forgotten or does it just not matter to you?

But Jeremy Corbyn, wah wah wah.

Wise up and stop embarrassing yourself.

BoredZelda · 26/09/2021 00:52

I don’t think anyone can be certain of that, but even if it were the case, O think ot would have been better to be in this position because of incompetence than because of a set of deliberate decisions made which were in the best interests of the PM, his cronies and the party and not the best interests of the Country.

Bucanarab · 26/09/2021 00:57

Yup, England is fucked. I just hope we in Scotland can break free before we're fucked too.

BobbiPink · 26/09/2021 00:58

@Rosewaterblossom

It's no worse than any other difficult time in history... The UK is always a bit of a laughing stock because we just aren't the same as the rest of Europe and never have been. Being neighbours with someone doesn't mean you're the same as them ..
Agreed! Since the break from Rome in the 1500s, we’ve always done our own thing much to the annoyance of our neighbours. I’m not saying that the UK has always made the right decisions (we clearly haven’t), but we’ve always survived and bounced back.

This is a terrible time, nobody can deny it. But it’s not the apocalypse, even though the media would love it if we believed it was! I didn’t vote for Brexit, and I really wish it hadn’t happened. I don’t believe though that the UK will forever be shambolic because of it. There will be a long period of adjustment, but Tories or not, things will return to a sense of normalcy. Btw, I hate the Tories, but Labour are almost as big an embarrassment albeit for different reasons.

BobbiPink · 26/09/2021 01:01

@Bucanarab

Yup, England is fucked. I just hope we in Scotland can break free before we're fucked too.
Oh not this again 😂 Scotland won’t immediately be part of the EU and may not even qualify for quite some time. You won’t be able to retain the pound, and for reasons that baffle me, the pound continues to be stronger than the euro even post Brexit. There are many more arguments, but I’m very sleepy now …
Generallystruggling · 26/09/2021 01:04

Yep, I totally agree. Feel even more dismayed because I didn’t vote for any of it, neither did anyone I know. We’re all suffering due to things we didn’t ask for. That’s democracy though, init. We’re gonna end up like a sorry starving country in the Eastern bloc.
