Are fucking selfish, and will be the first to moan when they're takeaway can't be delivered, they can't get a taxi, or places are short staffed as people CAN'T GET TO WORK

god I'm pissed off

A rural school is apparently already considering offering online learning in case there are knock-on transport issues next week.

JustABloodyMinute · 25/09/2021 21:47

On the plus side, maybe it will encourage people to reconsider their use of cars for walking-distance journeys.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/09/2021 21:48
@wewereliars 'you' became 'too', auto correct.

'Securing your supply' as you term it, is also panic buying.

Is that simple enough for you?
I really don't see how making sure you have a weeks worth of fuel is "panic buying".

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 25/09/2021 21:50

I didn't panic buy fuel.

I just bought fuel before the panic buyers bought it all.

mumwon · 25/09/2021 21:51

On our town facebook 2 teachers had a conversation about 1 of them living in a nearby village & coming into our town & the other living in our town & working at the others village
Maybe they could swap with each other Grin (provided we teach the same level & subjects!)

Nayday · 25/09/2021 21:56

@JesusIsAnyNameFree, if that's what you usually do, and you're filling up as normal = not panic buying.

Stocking up 'just in case' when you wouldn't usually = panic buying.

diplo123 · 25/09/2021 21:56

In the news they keep reporting it as a trivial fuel problem & it is a handful of petrol stations affected. Everything is OK. Government says no fuel shortage and all that. Have they gone out and had a look!! I drove through 3 cities and could not find fuel anywhere accept for extortionate prices on motorways & A routes, which I had no choice of paying. Profiteering from our miseries. Now motorway and major A routes are starting to run out.

3luckystars · 25/09/2021 21:58

This is called ‘putting smoke on the bees’ it is trying to calm everyone down. What a mess this Brexit turned out to be.

RedRiverShore · 25/09/2021 21:58

It's a good excuse if you want to wfh instead of going to the office

I don't think my grade A twat of a boss will see it that way. He will want me to get my pregnant arse on 3 buses there and 3 back, I'm sure. He also encourages us all to go to each others desks to speak if needed, because Teams/Zoom is.. I don't even know Grin

I really don't see how making sure you have a weeks worth of fuel is "panic buying".

Assume that normally, on each day, one seventh of all cars fill up with 7 days worth of fuel. On Saturday, Saturday's buyers purchase 7 days worth, but those who normally fill up on Sunday fill up by buying 6 days worth, Monday's buyers get 5 days worth and Tuesday's get 4 days worth. Those who buy Wednesday, Thursday, Friday decide they don't need to buy yet.

The filling station normally sells 7 units on a Saturday, but today it sells 7+6+5+4=22 units. It manages to satisfy this demand, but its tanks are now empty until its normal weekly delivery on Monday afternoon.

crapatthis1 · 25/09/2021 22:15

What annoys me is littered on here and on SM is all the talk of the 'selfish assholes' queuing to get petrol. I'd be willing to bet the large majority genuinely need petrol and have been forced to join the masses to ensure they get petrol before it runs out so they do what they need to do.
My car (which I desperately need) was running really low. I tried yesterday at about 8 - most petrol garages were already out of unleaded or had massive queues.
I tried again at 1.30am. Most garages were now either completely run out of unleaded or only had diesel or had closed.
So that's what causes the panic. I nearly ran out of petrol just trying to find petrol Confused

I went again at 10am and after queuing for an age, managed to get some - I only put in £30 (by choice).

A lot of posts have labelled me as selfish just for being in this queue.

Right. Well, either way, I went about 10-12 ish hours before I was intending on going and as I stated in my previous post, I would need to take 6 buses a day, so 30 in a week, while pregnant and during a, still very much active, pandemic. I don't feel like I've done anything wrong.
DoucheCanoe · 25/09/2021 22:18

If buying something a week early classes as panic buying then I guess that's what I did!

Tbh though I ended up on anti-anxiety meds during the last bout of shortages (not bog roll!) so it means I have a bit of control and keeps me in a reasonably sensible frame of mind. Bugger it 🤷‍♀️

RedRiverShore · 25/09/2021 22:23

People banging on about not panic buying have probably got a fullish tank and/or wfh

RedRiverShore · 25/09/2021 22:26

This is similar to the Covid threads

Or an electric car, judging by some of the smug comments here.

Yes obviously Brexit is completely to blame, and nothing to do with Covid and the 40,000 HGV driver tests that have been cancelled as a result.
Grenlei · 25/09/2021 22:35

I agree anyone who wouldn't normally get fuel today but did is basically panic buying. Obviously that doesn't include anyone who was trying to get fuel yesterday and was unsuccessful.

I got fuel today because I had a long journey to do. I'd normally put in £40. As the garage I went to was only allowing people to put in £30, that was all I could get, so I've actually under purchased compared to my usual pattern.

I do agree this is a tactical story...2 weeks ago almost all our local petrol stations had no fuel, the supermarket ones and the BPs. However although there was minor consternation on local social media, people didn't get whipped into a frenzy, a few people said this or that one still had fuel, everyone was sensible and 2 days later it was all back to normal.

Maybe they also need to get to work or are the taxi driver or delivery person who has gone for a top up to make sure they have enough as they can't risk running out.
AGreenerShadeofKale · 25/09/2021 22:39

It is odd how BP announcing they were closing a handful of petrol stations started all this.

thistimelastweek · 25/09/2021 22:44

Just hoping that when I don't show up at work my boss congratulates me as a non-panic buyer.

Singinghollybob · 25/09/2021 22:50

@Shitfuckcommaetc if you were unable to buy petrol could you not spend that money on a taxi instead?

Apple1971 · 25/09/2021 22:54

So we have three bars left of petrol in our car. Would normally fill up when it’s on one or two but hoping that Monday my partner can find some so that she doesn’t have to get the train to and from work as a nurse doing 13 hour shifts next week if she can’t get any. Not sure if that is classed ad panic buying or having no choice buying? I’d also prefer if if she didn’t have to spend an hour sat in a petrol station queue on her day off.

People are crazy

NotMyCat · 25/09/2021 23:00

I've got half a tank. I did 986 miles last year so I'll be fine for a while yet!
