Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

Wow. That is much shitter than I expected!

Maybe they are MNers and will discover that it truly is a disaster of a name that even Adolf would be better than, then they can nip down to the registrar and eat humble pie.

I can't believe the registrar kept a straight face.

MyPatronusIsACat · 23/09/2021 21:02

@Theredjellybean

Omg.. Thats truely terrible and utterly yuck inducing story/reasoning... Are the thinking they are 1970's hippies? I think I'd start a nickname now... You coukd call him SW... A bit American to use initials but better than stormy water

Or you coukd try saying storm with short second syllable... So it sounds like stom.. Which sounds vaguely scandanavian.
I'd be saying he is so tiny for such a big name I think of him more as stom... If you get challenged.
Poor poor child

STOM!

Sounds too much like Stoma.

BeaLola · 23/09/2021 21:03

@Leeds2

Has it actually been officially registered? Just thinking it might be rejected.
I don't think the Register Office can refuse - only if offensive /rude
MolyHolyGuacamole · 23/09/2021 21:04

@WildFlowerBees

Reminds me of a couple who called their son number 31 bust stop or something Grin
Number 16 Bus Shelter 😂

Always remember that name in relation to the NZ court ruling that allowed the following name to be changed: Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

sloutside · 23/09/2021 21:04

Time to bring in the Icelandic system of a list of approved first names!!

Rosesareyellow · 23/09/2021 21:04

I’m sure it would sour relationships for a long time but maybe for the sake of this poor boy you should show his parents this thread…
Everyone was ready to tell you YABVU - I’ve never seen such a turn around.

amusedbush · 23/09/2021 21:05

Fucking hell, the name is actually worse than I expected and their reasoning is so cringeworthy I want to punch my own teeth out.

Terrible. I don't blame you for not using the name OP, I don't think I could say it out loud. I'm also not surprised your DH is Hmm about his son now - this choice of name makes him (and his partner) look like a right twat!

Sciurus83 · 23/09/2021 21:07

Ooooh wow yeh alright that is a crap name! The explanation makes it worse, what utter wankery. Still, it's his name, you gotta go with it. I mean it's not the worst name I've ever heard though, he'll be Storm in no time. Your son's a new age hippy type right?!

BabyC21 · 23/09/2021 21:07

@TwinsandTrifle

For now, can the collective minds of MN come up with anything (not Storm, or Stormzy Hmm ) that Stormy-Water/ Stormy-Water Cloud can be shortened to, that sounds half decent? "SC?" Sort of like the way you'd shorten Sarah Jane?

Anyone?

It would be SW though? So like South West… and we could be back to the weather theme 😂 south west winds
MolyHolyGuacamole · 23/09/2021 21:08

This will be S-W C in a few years, poor thing

Ridiculous name for baby
BananaPB · 23/09/2021 21:08

That IS a ridiculous name- especially when the most famous Stormys right now and Stormi Webster (Kylie Jenner's daughter) and Stormy Daniels (female porn star who had an affair with Trump)

Would they accept you calling him a nickname ? There's a few one syllable names you can make like Sto, To, Ro, Mi

SpeakingFranglais · 23/09/2021 21:10

Can you imagine writing that on your University application or first job?

It’s potentially career limiting and completely avoidable.

I hope he (it is a boy right?) does a Zowie Bowie when he’s older.

Bawdrip · 23/09/2021 21:11

@GemmaRuby

I don’t think they know what every cloud has a silver lining means.
Yes! It should have been Cherry coz the pregnancy was the cherry on top. Sounds like they are referring to their sex life as the 'cloud' and the pregnancy the silver lining. So really his name should in fact be Silver. And they got the order wrong as now he is named after the bad bit of their lives rather than the good bit. Honestly it's dreadful on so many levels. Although Storm is at least recognised as a name. As long as he grows up more of a hippy than a businessman or politician.
ScrambledSmegs · 23/09/2021 21:14

That's a completely wet name Confused. I mean, literally wet. I'm not insulting the baby's masculinity,

They're going to feel like such plonkers when the new baby high wears off.

....Far, so, la, tea, doh!
noodlezoodle · 23/09/2021 21:16

@Unsure1983

They should just move to California it would be perfectly normal. I actually like it, it sounds poetic and has a nice cadence. However I would never do it to a child.
I live in California and I can promise you it is not a perfectly normal name here Grin

Also why would you name your child after a porn star? I really, really hope this is a wind-up because if not that poor child is in for a lifetime of embarrassment (at least until he can legally change his name).

liddlelambsydivey · 23/09/2021 21:16

Yow, that's quite a name. The explanation of why it's meaningful to them makes them seem self-obsessed. Why name their child after their "stormy" past? Odd. The name seems to be more about them than him!

azimuth299 · 23/09/2021 21:16

Agree that it's a stupid name but you're just going to have to get on with it. Don't fall out with family over a baby's name for goodness sake! Or you risk not seeing the baby at all.

inmyslippers · 23/09/2021 21:22

It's awful I don't blame you. Is there a middle name

Yes - Cloud!

^^please tell me that's a wind up

SiobhanSharpe · 23/09/2021 21:23

@HalzTangz

Every time I read the name on your comments OP my mind is singing a line from one of Tina Turners song.

Although I get the name has personal reasons, the poor child will be bullied.

If not registered yet could you not ask them to consider

First name - storm
Middle names water-cloud

Steamy Windows? Kinda works...
RazorSharp · 23/09/2021 21:23

My MIL was like you, "I can't get used to that", called our son "baby"

How's baby, is baby hungry blah blah

His name ....

George!

FFS!

It's not what you think, that's not important, it's your DGC name, get over it!

What will happen if you say it? Will you combust?

weegiemum · 23/09/2021 21:24

My 17 year old said

Bullied at school
Sounds like a My Little Pony
And with the explanation, sick noises.

Lightisnotwhite · 23/09/2021 21:24

SW is the spoilt brat sister of Arthur - US kids cartoon. Not sure if it’s on anymore but still.
I totally get why you can’t say it after finding out the reason.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/09/2021 21:25

Yet another cross post. I ought to change my user name.

Isababybel · 23/09/2021 21:27

I was preparing to say yes yabvvu until i read the name! Ffs, the poor child. I hope this is just a wind up thread.
