Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

@Margo34

Just here to know the name!

River, Bear, Wolf, Forest, Daisy, Rose, Chip, Apple, Blossom?

Or is it more like.....a more random noun, Spaghetti? Biscuit? Kid?

It’s a bit like your first lot of names but they are tame in comparison. It’s not just about what we think it’s more about the abuse the poor child will get when he’s growing up. I just don’t think they have thought about that.

Tough you’ll just have to get used to it.
Now tell us what it is!!!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 23/09/2021 18:03

TELL US THE NAME OP!

ThorsLeftNut · 23/09/2021 18:04

Still think YABU and the name is probably fine.

mathanxiety · 23/09/2021 18:04

This sounds like a 'you' problem.

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 18:04

@Iwantcauliflowercheese

I fully understand OP. My DSGS has a terrible name. It's a place name. I was embarrassed when people asked his name. I still cringe now, it's that bad.
At last somebody who understands the complete ridicule involved. It literally makes me cringe - more so because of why they called him this name. The family’s whole reaction was complete disbelief

@PegorySpeck

I’ve explained that we just have to try, but it makes us cringe and we feel so uncomfortable. It’s a name that is also a noun so we feel it is so completely out of context. When they gave their reasons for this name it made things worse.
It’s making YOU cringe. It’s making things worse for YOU!

Ignore the fact it makes YOU fee uncomfortable and call the baby it’s name.

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 18:06

I can bring myself to say it - it’s DH that’s the main issue, he sees his son in a completely different light now and not in a good way

Dying to know what the name is!

DedalusBloom · 23/09/2021 18:06

I'm calling Aardvark. On the plus side, always first on the School register.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 23/09/2021 18:07

Mountain Range
Mighty River
Waterfall
Niagara
Africa
Bison
Oak tree

Yogsgirl · 23/09/2021 18:08

Ugh! Such a boring thread without the name- we can't tell you if YABU if we don't know how bad the name is!

SouthOfFrance · 23/09/2021 18:08

If its one like River, Bear, Wolf, Forest, Daisy, Rose, Chip, Apple, Blossom then I honestly can't see the problem. Might not be your choice of name but it's not your child, so you need to get over it & start using the name. I can't see why anyone should be teased over their name, and if they did then its the person doing the teasing who is in the wrong, not the parent or child.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 23/09/2021 18:09

Is it Tiger?

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 23/09/2021 18:09

It doesn't matter. It really, really doesn't.
If the kid doesn't like his name when he gets older, he will change it or get people to call him something else. But chances are it will just be accepted because there are so many unusual names around these days, they're actually not unusual any more at all.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 23/09/2021 18:09

Come on Op, spit it out, or are you hoping to stretch this out to two full threads.

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 23/09/2021 18:10

Unless it's an insult or inappropriate word eg Shitface, then just start using it. You'll get used to it.

TheIrritableGoldfish · 23/09/2021 18:11

I would actually prefer Skegness which a PP suggested cauli no offence to Skeggie, but the name must be really bad.

I'm going with Mountain

Marmelace · 23/09/2021 18:12

Carry on like you are and your dh probably won't see his son at all or his grandchild.
AhNowTed · 23/09/2021 18:12

I thinks folks are being a bit disingenuous.

If it's something like Moon Unit (a la Frank Zappa).. yeah I'd struggle with that.

How is little Moon Unit, I mean come on.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 23/09/2021 18:12

Ponsonby, nn Pob.

whiskersonkittenss · 23/09/2021 18:13

Is it Buzz

user1493494961 · 23/09/2021 18:13

WeAllHaveWings · 23/09/2021 18:13

Heronwatcher · 23/09/2021 18:14

Both of you need to get a grip. Say the name 100 times a day, ideally in public, until you can deal with it, maybe they hate your name? You have a lovely healthy grandchild. That’s the main thing.
