Everything is so expensive!

Seen today:

£27.50 for a bobble hat 🙄
£300 for a two hour kids party at softplay, limit 20 kids 😱

Am I just right, or are prices rocketing?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 22/09/2021 16:38

Hats are very cheap and £300 for a party with staff and entertainment isn’t that expensive for 20 children.

Twillow · 22/09/2021 16:39

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

Baby plum tomatoes up from £1 to £1.05 at Tesco Express. It's obv only tiny but it's a pebble that warns of an impending avalanche.
That's 5%. So even though 5p doesn't sound much but it's a lot across the board. Wages certainly not going up that much.
Booknooks · 22/09/2021 16:40

You can get plenty of reasonably priced bobble hats, not that it's good for the people involved in making them who are exploited, but for consumers it's good.

Soft play centres were closed for nearly a year and have lost a lot of revenue, £30 a child for 2 hours for presumably either exclusive use or for food as well doesn't seem too bad, they need to make up for money lost to remain open.

I think some food is still cheap- loaves of bread for 55p, 4 pints of milk for £1 etc. Utility bills, rent, council tax etc are the things that will probably have the most affect.

girlmom21 · 22/09/2021 16:42

@BoredZelda

No she's using the example of a hat she bought 2-3 years ago going from £10 to £27.50 in that time.

No, she’s using an example of a company which will sell a range of hats at a range of prices.

She specifically said the was £10 a few years ago
Thewiseoneincognito · 22/09/2021 16:44

£27.50 for a bobble hat- it’s clearly not cashmere then? Because I’d be asking where from otherwise. My Hermes beanie was £380 😳

Food has gone up though, Alpro milk is no longer £1 on the offers, it’s now £1.25.

M&S Lemons seem to be little yellow balls full of seeds recently so Christ knows where they’re coming from, the price hasn’t changed but the standard has.

GatoradeMeBitch · 22/09/2021 16:54

I used 2 types of public transport today in an area I hadn't visited since before covid. Bus price had gone up 25%, taxi cost was up by a third.

I agree about fruit and veg quality lately. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more, but farms are probably suffering both from lack of pickers and lack of transport drivers because the quality is terrible. Especially soft fruit. Unless I get lucky strawberries seem to be at least a week old by the time they reach the supermarket shelves. You have to eat them same day really or otherwise you've paid £2.50 for the privilege of disposing of mouldy red mush.

JustSumo · 22/09/2021 16:55

Where are you looking to buy a bobble hat for £27!! 😳😳

GrandDuchessRomanov · 22/09/2021 16:56

Also Smith's crisps have very sneakily reduced their 8 pack of S&V chipstix down to 6 packets for the same price.

DS is severely autistic and they are one of his "safe" foods so really noticed it!

TubeOfSmarties · 22/09/2021 16:59

Yep. Brexit.

Walkers too, 6>5 on the £1 bags
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/09/2021 17:02

Yep. Brexit.

What, for the bobble hat?

Energy prices are rising everywhere, so it's not a Brexit thing.

And before someone jumps on me, Brexit was a stupid thing to do.

FanGirlX · 22/09/2021 17:06

@WeAllHaveWings

With the impending increases, I tried to fix my fuel prices yesterday and the lowest tariff I could get is £187. I am currently paying £130.

Haven't fixed yet..........can't decide if I should.

It is starting to feel a bit worrying with fuel prices and day to day living costs increasing. Anyone on the breadline, or who have over committed themselves to mortgages or finance will find the next few months very tough.

Bulb's prices are going up by 150% in October, according to an email they sent me today.

I think Bulb are in financial trouble though. Putting prices up by 150% will just make customers go elsewhere though.

knitnerd90 · 22/09/2021 17:10

Yes (not in the UK but was discussing food prices with my SILs comparing US-UK-Oz yesterday!) Everything's gone up.

As for hats, compare like with like--acrylic vs. wool etc.

According to this article it's a bit more complex than that.

www.newstatesman.com/energy-climate-tech/2021/09/gas-price-crisis-is-brexit-russia-or-covid-19-to-blame

Boris Johnson and Michael Gove promised lower fuel bills for households once Britain left the EU. Gas prices in Europe are also at record highs, but countries in the EU’s internal energy market trade efficiently with each other using linked auctions that balance prices across the bloc. The UK, having decoupled its auctions from Europe, could in theory get cheaper energy than anywhere else – if energy was really cheap. But it isn’t, so the UK is more exposed to high prices.* *

onelittlefrog · 22/09/2021 17:15

Not sure what people expected when they voted Brexit.

Anyone who voted for Brexit shouldn't be complaining about this.

It isn't just Brexit though, it's far more complex than that. There are global shortages of various things. When demand exceeds supply it pushes up prices.
Cottonheadedninymuggins · 22/09/2021 17:20

@lynntheyresexpeople

£300 for a two hour party with 20 kids is alright actually 🤷🏻‍♀️
I thought that. If you have all 20 that's only 7.50 a kid per hour.

I do agree that things are increasing. I know there's been inflation, sugar tax etc as well as the obvious but I found a 2017 tesco receipt earlier. Hovis was 95p, doctor pepper 2 litre 1.00, milk 99p, Multipack of walkers was a pound, pack of deli style ham (now basics type or 20nslices of wafer thin ham) was a pound, bottle of ariel 1.3something litres was £4 etc etc. They might not big rises to nowadays but when everything on the list has risen 10-50p too at least it soon adds up.

Cottonheadedninymuggins · 22/09/2021 17:22

@Thewiseoneincognito and the 24 packs of Multipack crisps are now 22. No decrease in price though

nockybocky · 22/09/2021 17:22

Well we have got very used to cheap labour, that is harder to come by at the moment so prices are increasing.

nockybocky · 22/09/2021 17:24

some businesses will also be trying to get back what they've lost but it's not going to fun the next few yrs. The NI hike hasn't even hit yet

nockybocky · 22/09/2021 17:26

Very selfishly, I rather hope interest rates do go up. My retirement savings are being eroded by inflation

I somewhat agree, for most of my working life we've had low rates. I really want to not lose money on savings.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/09/2021 17:28

* Very selfishly, I rather hope interest rates do go up. My retirement savings are being eroded by inflation*

Be careful what you wish for. Mortgages and rents will go up. You might it won’t affect you, but business rents will be passed on to the customers.

nockybocky · 22/09/2021 17:31

@ChardonnaysPetDragon that depends if you have a mortgage & if you do how high

nockybocky · 22/09/2021 17:32

Plus I'm not taking about 15% but enough that your savings don't lose money.

Pebble21uk · 22/09/2021 17:32

Anyone heard the term 'shrinkflation' bandied about? That's when you get less of a product for the original price as mentioned above! I think we'll be hearing it a lot more in the months to come!
