Everything is so expensive!

Seen today:

£27.50 for a bobble hat 🙄
£300 for a two hour kids party at softplay, limit 20 kids 😱

Am I just right, or are prices rocketing?

Does the soft play include any refreshments at all? That's extortionate.

loveliesbleeding1 · 22/09/2021 14:43

I’ve found a lot of food items in my weekly delivery are up by 10-15p. I tend to buy the same things most weeks so just refill my trolley,so I hadn’t noticed until this past Sunday.

Fuckadoodledoo2 · 22/09/2021 14:43

Expensive things are pricey

I think this sums it up Grin

Huge inflation, masses of supply/demand issues

ManifestDestinee · 22/09/2021 14:49

You're using the example of a hat that is 7 times the price of a normal hat to exclaim that "everything is expensive"?
Jog on Hmm

Proudboomer · 22/09/2021 14:51

Packs of 24 normal coke has gone up from around £9 to £11.50.
I blame that arse Jamie Oliver for that one.

Arsewangry · 22/09/2021 14:51

Haha I make bobble hats for around that price. They are hand made though and often to exact requirements of my customers. More expensive if I'm using higher quality materials. I don't make much of a profit!

girlmom21 · 22/09/2021 14:53

No she's using the example of a hat she bought 2-3 years ago going from £10 to £27.50 in that time.
Fuckadoodledoo2 · 22/09/2021 14:53

Totally agree the price could be justified if hand made/high quality. I'm a knitter myself so know how much time and effort goes into making a bespoke piece. This does not fall into that category though.

NigellaAwesome · 22/09/2021 14:59

My joiner was telling me that he paid £42 for a sheet of mdf last week. A few months ago it was £17.

This will knock on across everything.

pigsDOfly · 22/09/2021 14:59

Seems a lot of things are going up in price, but I'm not sure bobble hats and children's parties are representative of most peoples shopping basket.

If people are willing to pay £27 for a hat that they can get for a lot less somewhere else that's up to them.

Likewise, spending £300 on a child's birthday party, it really isn't essential.

However, the fact that electricity/gas prices are going through the roof and food prices are going up and set to rise further is probably a better indication of the way prices are rising for the average person.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 22/09/2021 15:01

Life seems really expensive these days. Have checked the prices of holidays next year and the one I just took is going up by nearly £200 for the same week!

Costumeidea · 22/09/2021 15:03

Jarred sauce in Aldi (yeah I know, I should make my own blah blah) has risen from 49p to 56p recently. It all adds up!

SirenSays · 22/09/2021 15:06

Life is expensive. No matter how many time DH or I get a salary increase, we seem to be no better off. I've been waiting for a garden chair to go down in price for ages, everytime I look the price has gone up by another hundred quid.

subsy1 · 22/09/2021 15:06

I actually thought that £300 for 20 kids for 2 hours of soft play was OK. But I assumed that it might include some food and drink (juice?squash)?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/09/2021 15:06

@Fuckadoodledoo2

£300 for a party is quite expensive here. Just softplay entrance and party room use, no food included. Maybe that's the norm elsewhere. Or maybe Facebook suddenly thinks I'm loaded Grin
Without food that’s pricey!

YANBU

There is so much pent up demand for things that people couldn't do or buy for 18 months.

So the typical 'on the make or on the take' people are all on the make.

And the rest of just profiteering.

It is bringing out the anti-consumer element in me and I am trying not to give these people money.

Inflation is worrying high and there is a real risk interest rates will have to rise to counteract that, which is a problem for mortgages.

dottiedodah · 22/09/2021 15:29

Crumbs OP .£12.50 bobble hat M and S! hardly a cheap shop either

lurker69 · 22/09/2021 15:31

everything is getting very expensive! prices in the supermarket are going up pack sizes are going down in size, as a family of 7 its becoming very costly just to stay alive!

XingMing · 22/09/2021 15:33

Very selfishly, I rather hope interest rates do go up. My retirement savings are being eroded by inflation. But I also sympathise with all those people whose mortgages will increase overnight. I remember high inflation from the 1970s and 1980s.

Coke in general has gone up in price.

24 cans of Pepsi Max is £7 from Morrisons.
24 cans of Diet Coke is £9.

They used to be the same price or cheaper!

CovidCorvid · 22/09/2021 15:39

Nescafé cafe toffee nut sachets have gone up from £1.50 to £2.90 in morrisons. Doubled overnight!

I’ve recently resigned up with a tesco delivery pass so did my first shop on there for ages the other day. Went to “favourites” and lots of stuff no longer available but was interesting to see the “you could replace with this” under every thing. Pretty much identical product but smaller/less weight and normally a bit more expensive.

CovidCorvid · 22/09/2021 15:43

Halloumi and spinach for an example. If this is replicated over a trolley full of food it’s scary times.

Everything is so expensive!

@lynntheyresexpeople

£300 for a two hour party with 20 kids is alright actually 🤷🏻‍♀️
Makes it £15 per head which I think is fairly standard. Try a village hall with a bouncy castle and a face painter, a loads cheaper and can invite more kids.

£27 for a bobble hat seems expensive and I've seen them much cheaper. In principle though, you're right everything does seem to be creeping up in price
