I have been reading a brexit thread on here and lots of brexit voters in it seem horrified that they are hated and families have stopped talking to each other, and cut each other off over it.

but its politics nothing affects us more then politics, we have people who cut off others for believing in conspiracy theories and things. Brexit is the biggest shake up in this country in my life time, its taken away our freedom of movement for work and education, needlessly introduced a tonne of red tape, made our rights and standards extremely vulnerable to being destroyed (tories dont like food standards and workers rights this is well documented and they are in charge right now), reduced our standing in the world and will very likely lead us to being the poor man of Europe again, not to mention the fact its cut off vital EU funding to science research, regeneration and education projects up and down the county.

it affects everyone, of course people are perfectly entitled to hate those who voted to hurt them financially, prospects wise etc as much as they would hate someone who physically stole from them, theres very little difference is there?

Hate is a bit strong, but you don't have to respect a viewpoint you find abhorrent. I find it hard to feel any warmth for people with political leanings opposite to my own, because that represents them having dramatically different values to me. I'll talk to them, engage, be friends even on a superficial level, but I'm not going to love them.

ShinyThingsDistractMe · 22/09/2021 20:05

Cousin is a self confessed Nazi sympathiser and believes that Hitler had it spot on. Yeah I'd say you could hate them disengage.

Aunt is a Tory, no don't be daft 🤣

adeleh · 22/09/2021 20:26

Brexit is extreme. I think people still have no idea of what it’s unleashed or the impact it's had on millions of lives. Young people no longer able to be in orchestras, to study abroad, to get Erasmus grants. Some people withpre-existing health conditions unable to travel because of the loss of EHIC. Loss ofresearch money. Loss of investment in poor regions. Fishermen and farmers shafted. Appalling treatment of EU citizens, many of whom are ending up detained at airports.which must be bloody terrifying after Wndrush and for what? When has there ever been a vote that stripped so much from so many? And not once have Iheard a Leaver acknowledge these losses and hurt. Not once. So I may not hate them - in fact I quite like a few- but I can’t do what they keep telling me to do which is to move on and stop moaning. Brexit has hurt me every single day since June 24th 2016.

Spiindoctor · 23/09/2021 04:52

Surely the funding for students, Erasmus etc etc etc came from the money the U.K. paid into the EU.
You really believe the EU countries were generously pouring money into the U.K. to be ? what, kind to Brits. Some of our money came back to us but more left eg road building in EEurope.

Spiindoctor · 23/09/2021 04:55

We will save a fortune by leaving the European Common Agricultural Policy

Spiindoctor · 23/09/2021 04:59

Michel Barnier wants to ban all immigration into Europe from outside the EU. You couldn't make it up. Much immigration into France is from former colonies in Africa and N Africa - racist, no?

PersonaNonGarter · 23/09/2021 06:26

YABU

And show zero understanding of history or politics or consequences.

stuckdownahole · 23/09/2021 07:25

@bozzabollix

I am a remain voter who was shocked by the result, and now pretty saddened by me being right so far - didn’t want to be, but have stopped hating Brexit voters.

What was the most intriguing part of the post Brexit fallout was on social media. If you asked a Brexit voter an open question such as ‘what benefits do you think Brexit will bring’, I just got abuse. I had a few people wishing me dead for it. So forgive me for not going along with the idea that left wingers are the best at hating others, because it’s nonsense. The hostility and defensiveness from Brexiters online was something to gasp at.

The problem with that question ("what benefits do you think Brexit will bring") was that it was too often asked in bad faith and used as a "gotcha" by too many. It was James O'Brien's trick - ask an apparently innocent question and then demolish the answer. It became a form of bullying.

Of course it worked for James O'Brien because he could stop a caller to his radio show from interrupting him, and the same applies to social media - you can't be interrupted when typing. And lots of people on my SM were trotting out rehearsed and prepared arguments.

CityMumma78 · 23/09/2021 10:30

Hating someone because their opinion differs from yours is lunacy!!! There are many unstable dangerous and anti democratic countries around the world where a lot of the population “hate” on those that have opinions that aren’t aligned to theirs. Complete madness and unfortunately it’s that mentality that is to blame for a lot of the troubles in the world!! Get a grip.

Kendodd · 23/09/2021 10:44

I voter yabu because I don't think hate is helpful.
But
I don't hate anyone for having an opinion that differs from mine, no matter how wildly.
It's not just a difference of opinion, Brexit has bought real actually real world harm to people who didn't choose it.
The mother of a friend voter Leave then went and got herself an Irish passport (something my friend and her adult children are not entitled to) so that she can keep her own EU citizen rights. So the mother knowingly voted to take away rights and opportunities from her own child and grandchildren, rights they valued and wanted to use, then went out of her way to secure these same rights for herself. My friend and her children hardly see the grandmother anymore because of this and it has cause a huge rift in the family.
The grandmother apparently has no regrets and would vote exactly the same again and thinks her own Irish passport is irrelevant.

Wow, that’s incredible @Kendodd. Insanity.

OhWhyNot · 23/09/2021 12:01

It does feel like that

That many more are differing as so many have done for years

The writing was on the wall for the referendum especially once Boris Johnson choose what side to align himself too

Why it was such a shock I don’t know but majority of people are only interested in politics every four/five years

I have an interest but had not given much thought as most of us hadn’t to the EU

That’s the role for politicians and the referendum result just showed how out of touch so many of them are

OhWhyNot · 23/09/2021 12:03

*are suffering not differing

Though what is considered suffering to some is not to others

Kendodd · 23/09/2021 12:04

@Ionlydomassiveones

Do you even realise that the majority of ordinary people in this country are busy just putting a roof over their heads and feeding their kids?

How's that working out for you with Brexit and the Tories?

x2boys · 23/09/2021 12:07

@Ionlydomassiveones

“Brexit has hurt me every single day since June 24th 2016.”

But that’s you. This is what the middle classes don’t get, and why remain lost. Do you even realise that the majority of ordinary people in this country are busy just putting a roof over their heads and feeding their kids? They are not crying every day because poor Sebastian and Hermione are ‘no longer able to be in orchestras, to study abroad, to get Erasmus grants.’ Ffs. What planet are you on? Privilege planet. Remainers call the working classes thick or ‘misled’ but have no idea how stupid and out of touch you really sound.

Well said.
Ponoka7 · 23/09/2021 12:14

@Ionlydomassiveones, my DD is autistic, has a level of LD's, but she's talented in the kitchen and cleans thoroughly. Her dream was to work on cruise ships, that's now gone. She's as unprivileged as they come. Many young people can't just work across Europe and the world as they once could have done. Outside of the merchant navy, it was a way to fund travel, for the underprivileged.

How has Brexit helped you feed your kids?

To be honest exactly the same. I did vote remain but my life hasn’t changed at all. Same low wage, same occasional struggles.

Still can’t play in orchestras or study abroad etc but we couldn’t do that before so no big difference.

So far i havent noticed any difference, my son is also autistic and has severe learning disabilities, lots of people from poor areas voted for Brexit, because they thought things couldnt get any worse, they are not thick and stupid like posters on here like to think, it remains to be seen wether things will get any better in my area.

I don’t understand all this about different values. Do you really think that one party holds the moral high ground and the rest are morally corrupt? (I mean uk politics not worldwide)

As far as I can see they’re all a bunch of self-serving arsehles.

Well said! Some people are so hypocritical. They like to think of themselves as caring but really they only care about things that affect their own lives.

This. Absolutely this.
vivainsomnia · 23/09/2021 12:42

What is most sad is how everything is turning more black or white. Female or male, young or old, rich or poor, good or bad, love or hate....

Grey is gone, not allowed, if you're grey, you're hated by both extremes!

adeleh · 23/09/2021 12:46

Why is it hypocritical? Of course I'm writing about how it's affected me personally - I'm writing about the personal losses. I made that clear. And here we go again with the rude, aggressive replies and insults, which really illustrates my point.
And you have no idea what class I am. You've just made assumptions that only middle-class, privileged kids care about orchestras and have to be called Hermione etc
And it's absolute bullshit to call the Erasmus grants a middle-class issue. The middle classes and the privileged will be just fine without them. It's the poorer kids who actually needed those grants to go away and to experience how life-changing it can be to spend time in a different country.
The EU was always much more reliable than our own government about putting the funding where it was needed in terms of investing in young people via Erasmus or funding poorer regions. Yes - we no longer send £37 billion to them, or whatever it was, but our tax take is going to be much lower because of ruining businesses and our government never invested the money in public services anyway. Far more likely to be channelled to the likes of Dido Harding.
