AIBU for thinking hating people for their political leanings is perfectly normal?

I have been reading a brexit thread on here and lots of brexit voters in it seem horrified that they are hated and families have stopped talking to each other, and cut each other off over it.

but its politics nothing affects us more then politics, we have people who cut off others for believing in conspiracy theories and things. Brexit is the biggest shake up in this country in my life time, its taken away our freedom of movement for work and education, needlessly introduced a tonne of red tape, made our rights and standards extremely vulnerable to being destroyed (tories dont like food standards and workers rights this is well documented and they are in charge right now), reduced our standing in the world and will very likely lead us to being the poor man of Europe again, not to mention the fact its cut off vital EU funding to science research, regeneration and education projects up and down the county.

it affects everyone, of course people are perfectly entitled to hate those who voted to hurt them financially, prospects wise etc as much as they would hate someone who physically stole from them, theres very little difference is there?

I am a remain voter who was shocked by the result, and now pretty saddened by me being right so far - didn’t want to be, but have stopped hating Brexit voters.

What was the most intriguing part of the post Brexit fallout was on social media. If you asked a Brexit voter an open question such as ‘what benefits do you think Brexit will bring’, I just got abuse. I had a few people wishing me dead for it. So forgive me for not going along with the idea that left wingers are the best at hating others, because it’s nonsense. The hostility and defensiveness from Brexiters online was something to gasp at.

Underamour · 22/09/2021 18:30

No. I think Brexit voters were misled- as we all were. They were lied to. They might be gullible, misguided and self serving but I would not ever hate them.

Lets get igloo and the other failing energy companies producing british made co2, get buses to transport British workers for regular hours job picking fruit instead of super long days, start making the UK self sufficient and plan ahead. Ditto investing in training people to do the jobs that are in demand instead of hoping. Brexit is done and can’t be undone. So, let’s just get on and make the best of it.

Autumngoldleaf · 22/09/2021 18:31

Op I find it repugnant but also people who do hate each other for their beliefs are the same sort who go for "belonging" to a tribe.
So if religion was still really strong in UK life they would be the ardently catholics not liking the others.
It shows someone who with that sort of thinking and needs to belong but also a narrow minded way if thinking that doesn't allow others views or thoughts in.

A normal balanced person, who researched and weighed up pros and cons for most things including brexit would therfore appreciate the other "side".

I could for instance argue clearly for brexit and for remain.

JoanWilderbeast · 22/09/2021 18:35

I do wonder whether some people think that simply voting Remain (ie. for the status quo and business as usual) means they are some kind of intellectual and moral colossus compared to those who didn't.

saraclara · 22/09/2021 18:39

In my group of friends there are two couples who've known each other since they were at school. They're now in their sixties and have supported each other, holidayed with each other, been each other's kids' God parents, had a proper shared history.

The Brexit result ended all that. They fell out and have never spoken since. I think that's tragic. They had everything in common other than the way they voted that day.

Sn0tnose · 22/09/2021 18:42

I think you are being beyond unreasonable and you need to grow the fuck up. With your hatred of anyone who voted leave and your contempt for anyone who doesn’t lean one way or the other, you’re expending all this emotional energy against anyone who doesn’t think exactly the same way you do. This isn’t North Korea and there is a reason that one party states don’t tend to work well.

Wikipedia says there were 33,577,342 votes in the campaign. There are 46,500,001 registered voters. Do you also hate the millions that didn’t vote and could have potentially altered the outcome? You’re going to give yourself an aneurism.

Yes, Brexit is a shower of shite. But it’s done and we’ve just got to suck it up and get on with it. Hating people because they have had different experiences and formed different views is utterly pointless and is only going to damage your mental health.

This is bait. But, you should be angry at politicians who’ve sold your country off to benefit themselves and their ilk.

I mean, what does Britain even produce anymore? Doesn’t it concern anyone here that you hardly manufacture anything? Birthplace of the industrial revolution and everything.

You are going to be a third-world shithole if things aren’t turned around. I’m not really talking about Brexit either.

SpnBaby1967 · 22/09/2021 18:44

Yabu. Whilst I agree with you about Brexit, I couldn't hate someone just because I disagree with them.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 22/09/2021 18:46

I often see posts on Facebook from people claiming to vote Labour saying that they hate Tories and Tory voters etc so I guess it may be the norm for a significant proportion of the Labour vote. I rarely hear the same sentiment from the other side.

I think that declaring hatred towards other people of different political leanings stifles debate which isn’t good for anyone.

This type of anti British hate has become more rife on here too.

Yep. “I’m so liberal that I hate people with a different experience and view point to mine.” Sometimes I’m scared my eyes will never roll back into place after reading this kind of thing.
thinkbiglittleone · 22/09/2021 19:02

I think hate is a strong word, but it definitely can make you view someone differently and begin to dislike what they stand for.

mustlovegin · 22/09/2021 19:11

The tone in the OP is full of vitriol. I'm surprised this thread hasn't been taken down yet TBH

OhWhyNot · 22/09/2021 19:18

If what they support is hate and violence towards others then I wouldn’t want to talk to them

But conservative/labour or remain/leave no we don’t have to agree for me to like and respect someone

DamnUserName21 · 22/09/2021 19:20

@OneTC

Unless it's genuinely extreme politics then no it's completely fucking bonkers
this
DilysPhyllis · 22/09/2021 19:28

Hating someone with different views is not normal at all. Brexit did throw up some surprising insight into people's attitudes that perhaps hadn't been obvious before. I distanced from a few relatives over the Brexit debate, they were fairly distant anyway but their views were pretty extreme and distasteful imo, I don't need that in my life and have no desire to connect with them. I bear no animosity to them though, they're entitled to think what they like.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 22/09/2021 19:28

Are you saying you don't believe in democracy unless it suits you and your views?

Nicola is that you ??

ShutUpaYourFace · 22/09/2021 19:36

I remember reading the thread recently about empty shelves and Brexit and the hate was for those who voted leave was astonishing.
Keyboard warriors I think is what they're called!
How easy is it type hatred hidden behind a username? Unfortunately you couldn't possibly ask everyone you meet how they voted, then give them lots of hate just because they didn't or don't vote the same way as you Hmm

OhWhyNot · 22/09/2021 19:38

Was Brexit really that surprising? UKIP had just pulled in a high number of votes and it was no secret that many people felt left behind and there was a huge mistrust in consecutive governments

If it was then it shows how out of touch our politicians were with the public.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 22/09/2021 19:42

Also, there are some very left wing arguments for Brexit. I accept most people probably didn’t vote for it for those reasons but to assume everyone who voted for Brexit is right wing is not very well informed.

Cheeseplantboots · 22/09/2021 19:42

I dint hate anyone that have different political views but with all the problems Brexit is causing, I’d really go off someone if I knew they voted leave!

Ionlydomassiveones yes I think there is some truth what you have posted

CaptSkippy · 22/09/2021 19:59

I don't see any point in hating people, even if they hate you. It just drains your energy and gets you nowhere. I prefer to "forget" these people exist and ignore them as much as possible.
