Prince Philip’s mustard prank

I don’t have any very strong feelings about the Royal family except to find it all a bit outdated but I found this story a real sign of how out of touch they are. The thought of my grandfather encouraging me to squirt mustard on to his ceiling! Since he a) wouldn’t have an army of cleaners to clear it up b) only had a small number of rooms to go in to and would not have wanted disgusting mustard all over the place c) didn’t have incredibly high ceilings where perhaps you wouldn’t have noticed.
I could understand if it was squirting mustard outside or maybe on clothes that could be washed but I found that story really jarring. They don’t need to be house proud, they haven’t worked for what they have and have so much.

@Billlius

The Royal Family preach on and on about the environment and climate change while taking private jets etc etc. Prince Charles won’t have plastic at Highgrove. He makes the gardeners saw off any plastic handles on garden tools and refit them with wooden handles. It’s in the Highgrove book. So why do they have plastic bottles for mustard?
which highgrove book please?

@PartyStory

Somewhere recently there was a photo published of Anne’s sitting room watching the TV. It looked perfectly normal sized and totally cluttered.

If you don't realise that was likely staged so people think "Royals? Just like me!" then I don't know what to say. I know Anne is known for being more thifty and down to earth but I really doubt this was completely without outside interference.

I bet it was completely without interference being Anne. She’s way too down to earth for staging to be allowed. I thought it looked a right old mess - cluttered, grubby, just like my horsey friend’s place.
IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 21/09/2021 13:24

Bloke does daft messy thing without thinking of the consequences because he's not the one cleaning it up. Wife is Not Amused

Sounds like a shitload of threads on here tbh.

HypocriteHunter · 21/09/2021 13:26

Oh and yeah, I got him in a headlock and kicked the shit out of him, it was in all the papers didn't you read about it?

Yes max4u

Just like your anecdote would have been.

Read all about it. Because stories like that are usually sold for 30 pieces of silver.

Oh wait. I didn’t. Because both examples are clearly pish.

@DobbyTheHouseElk

It’s an audio clip by the grandchildren. It’s quite clear in the clip they are talking about a BBQ outside. There must have been a log cabin/tent/awning/lodge/summer house/shack for shelter.

PP getting themselves in such a twist thinking of BBQ in a palace.

They say ceiling rather than roof and that the marks may still be there so not likely to be a tent.
HypocriteHunter · 21/09/2021 13:32

Oh and you all glared.

How very supportive that must have felt to the weepy one.

This story was brought to you by Max4u, a tube of Colemans mustard and a bottle of Idontbelieveithappened.

Grin. Oh and have your eye roll back Hmm GrinGrin

myrtleWilson · 21/09/2021 13:35

I agree it was at a BBQ in Balmoral - there are loads of smaller cottages/summer outhouse type buildings there. The RF reportedly are much more relaxed at Balmoral so I can imagine a grandfather messing about with family, on here though its practically morphed into PP firing gallons of mustard out of a cannon repainting the State Dining Room at BP a glorious yellow Grin

Joystir59 · 21/09/2021 13:37

Entitled set of pillocks. I can't stand them.

Well, what can I say. It looked to me perfectly normal. Dog beds and hairy blankets everywhere. Might not be normal to everyone. Looked like the sitting rooms of many of my friends and family.

I don’t think for a moment it was staged. Looked like Anne was in her natural habitat to me. But I’m from a different background to some so find it more believable.

I’ll see if I can find the image.

Missushbb · 21/09/2021 13:43

i thought this too, OP, and I quite liked Philip. Although it may be I just like Matt Smith! yep can you imagine the mess, and the ceilings would probably need repainted.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/09/2021 13:43

Here you are, perfectly normal sitting room.

Lots of people have got the wrong end of the stick!

He put mustard into their HANDS then clapped them together unexpectedly so the mustard squirted up onto the ceiling. No plastic bottle necessary.

Zara’s brother said that he can still see the mustard on one ceiling, so it certainly wasn’t cleaned up.

The royal houses are probably really grotty and musty smelling. They’re not clean like hotels are. They are crumbling old piles!

Hehe! Does anyone else think Anne is trying to stifle a yawn at the sport on the TV in that photo?

Don’t blame her if she is; done it myself on many occasions.

Read it again.

He put the TUBE into their hands.

Tal45 · 21/09/2021 13:52

Grandad doing stupid, funny things with the kids without a thought to the mess he makes, grandma 'not amused'. Sounds pretty bloody normal to me.

SickAndTiredAgain · 21/09/2021 13:54

At the risk of overanalysing this (has that ship sailed??), no way would mustard hit the ceiling if you put it on your hands and clapped!
He put the tube in their hands.

@godmum56

This one. I got it for £3 in a National Trust second hand book shop.

Bill Bryson used to write about the Vegetable Olympics he played with his kids when his wife was out of the room.

No, he didn’t. He put the mustard tube between their hands. You’ve got the wrong end of the mustard tube.
annacondom · 21/09/2021 13:59

@DobbyTheHouseElk

It was at a BBQ. So outside somewhere I’d imagine. Not in a palace. Probably on a canvas tent awning or something.

Sounds like a funny prank to play on his grandkids.

Zara says that the marks are still on the ceiling. So definitely inside. It says he liked barbecuing, but that was a separate topic.
MLMsuperfan · 21/09/2021 14:00

Jokes that involve mess/damage/waste always stress me out.

Flyingantday · 21/09/2021 14:02

@ArblemarchTFruitbat

I'm no fan of the late Philip but I don't think this is something to get agitated about.
Agree with this… although tube mustard sounds good when you only have it on a ham sandwich once in a blue moon (prefer Dijon)
Flyingantday · 21/09/2021 14:03

And to be fair, at first glance I read it as “mustard lube” which would be a completely different anecdote Confused

MilduraS · 21/09/2021 14:08

I can't get worked up about it. Sounds like the kind of thing my Dad or grandad would do.

JavaQ · 21/09/2021 14:13

"just an ordinary shooting weekend"

Just squirting mustard onto the ceiling.

Just do not care!
